Well lets get it started. Friendlys are taking place, the transfer market is heating up and I am ready for some football. Here are my thoughts on the top English clubs going into this year.
Why are Liverpool spending all this money in this transfer campaign on scrubby English players? I feel, as always, because they are English these players transfer fees are being inflated. We will see if they can live up to their loft price tages. I think Suarez will have a great year and be close to top of the league in goals. A lot of the teams success depends on the health of Stevie G imo. Along with the health and consistency of their centerbacks. I am interested to see how Aquallani does back in the prem. He is a good player, but I am not sure if the english game suits him, also depending on if he can stay healthy or not. I think at best liverpool shoot for 4th place. I dont think they have the quality overall to go any higher.
Looks like Sneijder is going to be going to Man utd. I'm not totally sure why Inter want to sell. $40 million is a good sum of money, but I don't see who they would get that they feel will adequately replace him. With Man u I would think they would need to change formation if he comes in. He is supposed to be the replacement for Scholes but he is a more offensive player than him imo. With Rooney and Hernandez and Sneijder out there where does that leave Nani and Valencia? I still am surprised Berba isn't trying to move on. They still have a quality squad and adding Sneijder will probably make them favorites for the title again. However a lot depends on the success of de Gea. It will be interesting to see if he lives up to his price tag.
Chelsea have been relatively quiet besides trying to get Modric. Which I think they desperately need to be honest. Chelsea's window is starting to close imo. Still plenty of good players, but they are all starting to get older. Torres is still a question mark until he proves otherwise. An older team, especially guys who have won things, start to lose ambition. They wait for someone else to do the hard running. We'll see if Villas-Boas can make sure the team doesn't get stale. I think third or fouth place is realistic.
Man City on the other hand is most defiantly a team on the rise that I can realistically see winning the title this year. I can see Tevez leaving, possibly for Corinthians or Inter if they sell Wes (this seems quite a likely scenario imo with Inter in need of someone to partner Eto'o). City still have a wealth of attacking talents. With another year for players to come together and Mancini to implement his playing style I believe the future is bright on the powder blue city of Manchester. However I am not convinced Mancini is the right coach for the job, but we shall see. Second place seems reasonable, and possibly even first if they can overcome their woes against the weaker teams in the table.
Tottenham have a chance to climb back in the top four at the expense of Arsenal imo. But its not to likely unless they bring in a quality striker. They have several strikers that posses quality, but not one that is a star and can be relied upon when the going gets tough. Most of their strikers could play on any club in the world, however they would all be substitutes. That is their problem. I would like to see if Friedel ends up winning the number 1 shirt, he has been playing at a good level for years. Their defense is a bit suspect. Their midfield has plenty of quality and is definitely the teams strong point. 4th place is what they should be shooting at but I see them probably in 5th again.
Lastly, my favorite fifi-men, Arsenal. Gervinho was a nice signing who will add to the attack. But they still have the constant Cesc saga. This appears to be the summer he will leave, but until he does who knows. He is such a key player for the club though, he will be very tough to replace, there are few players like him out there. To compound this problem Nasri is rumored to be leaving. Losing both would be devastating, but I don't see Nasri leaving honestly, and he could actually be a ready made replacement for Cesc should he leave. They have brought in no reinforcements for the constant achilles heal of the club, goalie. Along with no quality center back, which also hampered Arsenal last year. The team still has quality, but I do not think they possess the mental wear-withal to win anything unless they bring in some quality veterans. They could very well surprise me and finish as high as third imo, but i would not be surprised (unless they make some moves in the back and goal) if they finish as low as 6th. Anywhere in there.

I grow increasingly tired of Arsenal being top tier but never being able to push through to number one. It's made me watch matches less and less over the last few years. Perhaps this makes me a "fair weather" fan but when the only time you can watch your team is Saturday morning/afternoon on one specific channel, you tend to miss games anyway.

i may have to change my predictions for man city. they are just no a fluid team. im watching them play the vancover whitecaps. bottom mls side. and just needed a SWP wondergoal to take the lead in the 84th.
yes i know preseason v. midseason forms but it still looks to be the same old city. grind out wins. a top side needs to be able to do that from time to time. but it should not be the way it strives to play!

yea i can understand that. its all about winning, and arsenal just aren't bringing home the bacon.
i think arsen is waiting on the sale of cesc and possibly nasri to buy players. but they need to add regardless. they werent winning things with those 2 players.

watched man city play the galaxy again on their US tour. same results. just disjointed. not fluent. every player they have is quality, but they dont have a system. they just buy good players and mash them together. instead of barca or milan or man u etc, those coachs have systems where they bring in players to occupy specific positions and play a certain way.
super marios pretentious backheal that got him pulled 30 minutes into that game is iffy in my opinion. he did look like he thought he was offsides after he did it. but i really cant say without being in his head. if he knew he was onsides and just did it because it was a friendly, i dont agree with it. score your goals. showboat when you are up by a lot of goals if you'd like. or do it in practice. but when games are close put your opponent away.

chelsea agree to terms with valencia over juan mata, which imo would all but end the modric pursuit, to the delight of harry redknapp.
after most of the first 2 rounds have been completed here are some thoughts...
man city and bolton played an entertaining game today. much better on offense than i have seen in past games. however they looked vulnerable in the back, which i think will be their achilles heal. the players they have back their, kompany, lescott, kolarov, ect. are all good players. however i dont find any of them to be world class.
their attack no doubt is top 5 in the world in my opinion. silva (epl player of the year imo), dzenko, kun, tevez, super mario, are all superb talents. they will be Man u's biggest challenger this year.
arsenal looked poor yesterday, emphasizes wengers need to spend. i understand his dilemma, he does not want to overpay for players, and he wants to find the right players for his system. however he has had sometime to do this and i dont know what hes waiting for.
liverpool look like a dangerous team with suarez on the pitch. he will challenge for the top scorer this year with kun, dzenko, and rooney imo. carroll is a good player for his size, and serves his purpose, but suarez will be what leads the pool as far as they will go.

Like I said dzenko is turning into a problem.
Was really pissed milan didn't buy him.
But man city is looking dominant. Man u did just beat them 3-0 but it took them some 60 minutes to get one and spurs were still in the game. Also would have been much diff if spurs possible got one through vdv when lennon didn't bother to play him as he was wide open. And that game was without modric in the team.
I still feel they can be scored upon, by better teams. But it doesn't look like anyone can stop them from scoring. To think mario and tevez on bench.
As I type kun scores. Looks like my best bets for top scorer are going right on track.

after a promising start to the game, a de gea error creeps into the fold for man u. they can only cover him for so long, eventually he will cost them.

Very promising from United mind. And, not to get carried away too early - after all, it is England - but that spine of English players looks extremely decent. Cleverly, Jones, Smalling, Welbeck, Young and obviously Wayne Rooney - who seems to be enjoying this new sparkling youthful company - all look composed beyond their years.

as much as i dislike them (i am still an unbiased observer), manchester is really playing like a well oiled machine at the moment. i like what they have done bringing in youth through purchases and bringing back loaned players.
i doubt they will tank like chelsea last year, but it is something to think about. the blues were crushing people 7-0, 4-0, ect early on last year and then ran into issues around the christmas break.

i think its got more to do with manchester united being pushed by manchester city, and having an advantage of playing after city the last two games. we've had to score a few to make sure we still top. fergie will be determined not to slip that lead to city at all

well we only have those home draws to blame really.
we didnt play bad last night. didnt get the luck especially when their defender hit the bar. it wasnt our night with vidic being hurt and the ref being hoodwinked quite a lot, especially by their number 9 but i think our blend of young players inexperienced in europe, injuries and a couple out of form players showed last night.
ah well.
i am interested in how we approach the europa league, fergies never won it so thats a bit of motivation but i have a feeling he will treat it like the carling cup. but i think it could be good experience for the young lads and there are some good teams still in it
as far the champions league, el classico final all the way.

for sure the best money bet. but i also think it depends on the draw as always, they need to be on opposite sides and not met in the semi finals again like last year. wouldnt be surprised if uefa just happened to make that happend.
i would give outside chances to bayern whos looking good, more so if the glass brothers (robben, ribery) are healthy. and the other i would give to milan, they tied barca the first time being thoroughly outplayed but looked much better the second go around and i believe are closer than some think. especially if they bring in some people in the jan window. a defender and defensive middy are key (TEVEZ!!! too bad he cant play in CL this year).

the napoli chelsea game was a good one today.
idk who my commentator was, from what ive been reading it was gary neville, but man was he smoking that fattest crackrock known to man today. i do not know what game he was watching with the shit it was saying.
he was talking like napoli was some second rate team and chelsea were constantly on the verge of scoring. when it was the other way around today. napoli already knocked man city out of europe and had the two best players on the pitch today by a mile. granted they are not world class all over the pitch but the ones they have really are dynamite.
chelsea was lucky to get their one, while napoli should have had at least 4. but 3-1 is still a good scoreline to take back to london.
should be a good game, chelsea needing goals, and napoli's strength being the counter attack.

what a fucking horror show that first half was. my heart was pounding legit an hour after the game had ended. going with 3 forwards was a dumbass choice by allegri, he did not have a ton of choices to be honest the only to players that I would have played from the bench got on the pitch tonight. and thats saying something because i try and not play bonera at all costs. the second half was certainly better as a combination of arsenal using much of their legs and milan finally getting their heads out of their asses.
aquallani would have been much better to start but that was his first game time in months and i doubt he would have last long (or he would have gotten hurt had he played too much probably)
abbiati truly had one of the best double saves ive seen in sometime if not my whole life. that was fucking awesome. game saver. mexes also played quite well, the right side was never a problem all the pressure was coming down the left (milans left, arsenals right).
its an odd feeling after watching your team get rocked but still move on. its a sad feeling but then your comforted a bit. just weird. hats off to arsenal. after getting blown off the pitch on the first leg, knocked out of the cup and not have been doing the best in the league they turn it around to destroying tottenham and handling Milan. be good for their psyche heading into the home stretch trying to secure that 4th place finish, and in all probability RVP. i think he will leave if they dont qualify. Why wouldnt he?

this is the new everything football thread for the year. considering i am the majority poster, majority rules.
enthralling game between Milan and barca tonight. Milan goes back to spain without allowing a road goal to barca which is huge. first time they have been shut out in 30 games. both teams had a couple good scoring chances with Milan having the better of them, just could not convert.
i was legit scared with antonini, bonera and ambro starting the game. no t.silva, no abate, no mvb. pato, cassano, muntari, flamini all players who were also not available for a variety of reasons.
my fear turned to shock as antonini, bonera and ambro were the three best Milan players on the pitch besides Nesta, who is just amazing at his age. they really dont make masterclass center backs like him anymore. italy used to be full of them, sadly that is not the case any more. someday maybe..
going back at 0-0 is a big psychological victory. milan have show through 3 games they can hang with barca. it will of course be very tough at the nuo camp but it is possible.
in other games madrid easily beats apoel as expected. chelsea gets away with a clear penalty and wins 1-0. will probably go through. and munich also is victorious over an over matched side. these three ties are probably already settled. the semis should be tantalizing.

well the Milanese giants are out on some dubious referring. Theres no doubt Barca are the better more complete team but the ref made some serious questionable calls that changed the outcome of the game. Football isn't played on paper and on any day any team can win, and if going into half at 1-1 I think Milan had a legit shot to move on away goals. But that second penalty deflated them. O well next year....
And on that topic....
Mario to Milan?!?! (http://www.goal.com/en/news/596/exclusive/2012/04/05/3015214/manchester-city-ready-to-sell-balotelli-as-inter-ac-milan)

Even as a man united fan, i dont want to see ballotelli leave england, he's mega entertainment value. Tevez is everything that is wrong with footballers. But he could do well at milan, they have a lot of moody big headed buggers, he could fit in. or completely undermine the whole team and be a big baby.
Massive games on sunday, we benefit from playing first and that could be all she wrote.

mario is good for stuff on and off the field (good is obviously a relative term here). a fantastic footballer when he wants to be and also certainly can captivate away from the pitch as well.
chelsea has a chance if they can execute on free kicks but i dont think they can play defense compact enough to stop barca from scoring in open play.
bayern have a better chance of making the final than chelsea imo.

I told you chelsea would win. I have to say it.
I fucking hate barcelona. Yeah they have great players and score great goals but if they were as good as they think they are they wouldnt resort to whingeing every time a decision doesnt go their way. They too arrogant, none of the great teams would ever expect to win a champions league semi. Thats the way it seemed to me. They cant fucking defend either. Plus, you supposed to be the greatest team and need a goal and they still carry on with the cute passes and same old same old, get the ball in the fucking box, have a dig now and again.
Sure Chelsea rode their luck and john terry is a bit of a dick but they worked their bollocks off. Its a pity that they arent gonna have much of a team in the final.

I know what you mean (Guy Incognito) about Tevez and Ballotelli, but in the former's defence, and it's no excuse...he has obviously been unhappy at being away from South America for some reason due to family reasons. And I feel that when he's on the field - albeit when it suits him - he gives 110%, as cliched as that sounds, whereas Mario is often disinterested. As a United fan too, I appreciate the effort he put in for us. 'Fergie, sign him up' was a terrace chant for a reason. That said, he is distasteful and well, Gary Neville giving him the finger was a beautiful and deserved moment.
Anyway, title-race is shaping up nicely. We threw the Everton game away but I respect the fact they came out and played from the word go. I just think we got a bit slack at 4-2, thinking the job (the title) was done. I still fancy us to get something at Eastlands, and I would have taken this position in the league at any point in the first half of the season. Very excited for Monday nights (or Tuesday 5a.m here) game.

very shocked that chelsea are through. even with the 1-0 lead going into the second leg. at 2-0 and terry getting that red card i dont care who you are you had to think that was a wrap. but give them credit for fighting back. and it really does show barcas weakness in the back.
i seriously hope the rumors of tiago silva going to barca are just paper talk.
but nice to see a different final of sorts. going to be tough for chelsea with the suspensions but bayern have three themselves so well see. it will also help with chelseas quest for 4th place imo because they wont have to worry about resting terry and the others for the final they can just ride them straight through the leg games.

The referees have it all fixed these days, there's no real games anymore in Premiere League.

that was fucking awesome.
what a fantastic end to the season.
forza city.
and also what a send off for the legend pippo fucking inzaghi today. as he scores the game winner in his 300th and final game for AC Milan. i was crying like a child. truly a beautiful sight. it was also the final Milan game for legends Gattuso, Seedorf, Nesta, Zambrotta, and Van Bommel. Awesome cycle that won Milan a lot of trophies sadly has came to an end.
also del peiro scores in his last game for juventus as they win the title.

Correctly predicted Moz.
Can you now give me the first 6 numbers that pop into your head please? Then I'll go and put the lottery on thanks.
I'll never congratulate City. But well done - football.

I'm probably going to get a bit of flak from the other reds but i'm genuinely not that arsed. It might hit me during next season when city fans are giving it large still but at present I really dont mind because :
a) We blew it against everton and i have been resigned to it since city took the lead against newcastle
b) I didnt really have any hope before kick off yesterday and obviuosly i developed some and the manner of defeat was a bit mental but we've done that to plenty of teams
c)i have a lot of city friends and am prepared to let them have their first moment like this for a long time. Although City have great form in fucking things up , I have to say fair do's for the manner of victory.I'm not going to be bitter about it
d)at least its not fucking liverpool
If it starts to get a habit then yes i will be bitter as hell but i am not that upset at all about yesterday, we got 89 points which would be there or therabouts any season. I thought our fans and players did themselves credit with their reaction in that last couple of minutes. And i love oasis but i fucking hate liam gallagher.
I'm not going to tell this to any of my city friends mind.

As soon as Aguero scored and the City staff went mental I turned it off. When I managed to find the remote after throwing it across the room that is.
I couldn't face the idea of seeing them lift the trophy and I sure as fuck couldn't take 2 seconds of that prick Liam spouting off about how much he loves City.
Fair play to City (as much as it pains me to say it) but I only hope player power rears its ugly head as it did at Chelsea. That's the only thing that keeps us in contention - our excellent team spirit and man management and knowing that another Tevez/Balotelli strop is only ever a game away.
P.S. On redcafe somebody started a thread asking how people reacted when the winner went in. I got a laugh out of some of these... then I felt bad :(

because 1) hes so big. and 2) what he does sometimes is just blatant diving which is different than going down easier to avoid losing the ball/your advantage when you actually have been fouled to some degree.
