I used to have a gym membership where I used to go 3-4 times a week to spend 40 minutes on a treadmill or elliptical. I quit to save $ and now I'm trying this approach to exercise instead.
I've been trying some of her workouts for a while now. Only for the last week or so have I been trying to do one (or an approximation of one) of her workouts almost daily. They are really tough! But I like them because they're short and you can do them at home and she always has beginner modifications and encouraging advice. I like her videos, she seems really sweet and down to earth. She has decent recipes on the sight, too, and diet suggestions.
At the gym I would try intervals, but longer ones like 3 mins then 2 mins. etc. I would vary the resistance on the elliptical, too, so that I wasn't just doing cardio but was using muscle.
My body is pretty sweet right now but I'm hoping this will make it even sweeter, with less of a time commitment.
I don't have any of her equipment, not even the interval timer. I just watch the clock. I guess I don't do her workouts exactly. I just try to do her exercises. I pick 3-5 of them and alternate them, 1 minute per exercise for a total of 20 minutes.
I don't follow her diet advice. I don't eat 5 small meals a day. My diet is actually not very good. I tend to skip meals, eat junk food, and drink too much caffeine.
She used to do a lot of porn modeling and I searched her under the names Susana Spears and Susana Light and was aghast!! But whatever.
Who wants to workout with her and me?? We can discuss the exercises and workouts in this thread. You can talk about how weak and pathetic you are. Or you can talk about how your abs are like bladow and stuff.
c'mon lets get sweaty together.

I don't look anything like her...yet. heh. I will never, I'm sure. I'm a bit undecided about how I feel about her breast implants. She's a fitness leader and trainer so her body is supposed to represent what she's preaching. Her muscles do, but overall her silhouette is affected by the fake breasts so it's not like she could ever say "with the right training you can look like me!" Also, it makes me wonder if she had any other surgeries.
I found photos of her pre-breast augmentation and it was back before she had such muscle development, but her breasts were totes fine back then! She didn't even need implants!

Interval training is definitely the most effective use of your exercise time,
rather than doing hours of the same thing. Also, I've found that its good to change your workouts up, and try to do something different every week. Challenging your body to do different things stops you from plateauing.
However, despite my workouts and my fitness level combined with my practical and sensible eating habits, I still dont (and likely never will) have abs like that, i still have a soft belly and a jiggly butt. Maybe its genetics? Maybe i'm doing something wrong.

Yetra: probably with the right strict diet and exercises any normal healthy adult could have six-pack abs. I guess getting them might be easier for some people who don't naturally put on much weight in their middle. Anyway, who cares?
You should try some of her exercises. Last night I did a version of one of her workouts and I was really tired, I could only do 16 minutes instead of 20, I had to keep pausing for breaks, and I couldn't even do some of the exercises because I didn't have the strength; I had to simplify them.
I don't think that what I do is really interval training since I'm just doing a full minute of one exercise, moving to the next, and so on repeat. I think intervals have to be 30-50 seconds of maximum effort followed by 10 - 15 seconds of rest. I don't know if I'm doing maximum effort, and I'm not really resting at intervals. I only rest when I need it.

Shot for the search term. She looks eerily like one of my wife's friends, which will now make dinner parties seem less like hard work.
I started a boxing for fitness class recently. The boxing part is only about 1/3 of the hour session, it's mostly the stuff they would use to keep their fitness at level, so there's skipping, ab crunches, leg lifts, chin-ups, this epic medicine ball sit-up shit. It's fucking tough, since all I've been doing is swimming exercise-wise.
As punishing as the class is, it's a good feeling when it's done. I'm not aiming to look better, just to feel better. So far, so good. (y)

I like that kind of exercise, Kid P. It doesn't involve a lot of weights and equipment. I think the best exercise is the kind that uses your whole body so it requires you to become more coordinated. I think it's what makes a person more athletic, not just in better shape. I always want to be more athletic, not just better looking. I mean, I don't think I could get much better looking. :D j/k rawling

I only rest when I need it.
With interval training, I think i remember hearing that the ratio of maximum effort to rest is important, but I cant remember what it is (60/40)?
I typically only do it when running; one minute of a light jog, then one minute of extremely fast running, and repeat (sometimes i mix the time up a little bit) I find that it makes me more sweaty and tired than running at a steady pace.
Anyway, I've looked through her page, I'm definitely gonna try some of these, the marine boot camp one looks intense.
Do you have any of the equipment she uses? She seems to use that sandbag and fitness ball a lot, I dont have any sort of fitness equipment at all except a yoga mat.
Nuzzolese
07-20-2011, 07:34 AM
Yetra I don't have any of her equipment either. I don't have a timer or stopwatch. When I need an exercise mat on the floor I just use a folded towel. I do have 10 lb free weights, which I try to hold one of, for some of the exercises when she uses a sandbag. When she uses equipment I just do what she's doing - or a beginner version of it - with my own body weight. When it's something weird and I can't figure out how it would be effective without the equipment or it really relies on the equipment (like the dip station) I just do something else.
I am so silly, why did I think 9 minutes of exercise would take 10 minutes?? I did the "stronger and hotter" workout last night, sort of, and followed the clock so of course it only took 9 minutes. I did a minute of dragon lunges, a minute of burpees and a minute of squats, repeated 3 times. No rests. I held my 10 lb weight for all the dragon lunges and the all the squats and it wasn't too bad. The whole workout wasn't too bad, actually, because I did all the push-ups with my knees down, and in the second part I did 3 jump squats in each rep instead of doing a jump tuck. But at the end I did one jump tuck just to try it. With all those modifications it was one of the easier workouts I've done.
I was glad it was over quickly but I had to rush through my shower and cool down because it was Girls Night In and I had to set out the Hershey's, the Kettle Corn, and the Franzia.

I'm still doing these almost every day and I feel like I'm getting tired MORE easily. Like, it's getting harder to do, not easier. How lazy can I be? I don't have to GO anywhere, no gym, no equipment, nothing to do to prepare. It's only 20 minutes at the most. I should be used to the strenuousness of it. I'm not trying to do harder things each time, it's basically the same type of workout. So why does it seem like it's getting harder to push through? I suck.

I actually get enthused about going home to try the new exercises.
I bought a 5 lb bag of rice, put it in a canvas bag with my ankle weights, and have been using that as an alternative to her heavy sandbag in some workouts. It's lighter and easier to manage than my 10 lbs dumbbells in some of the workouts.

I'm not sure how long I have been doing this now. It started just a few times a week, and gradually I did more frequent workouts. So I'm not sure how long it's been that I've been doing one of these kinds of workouts (typically with beginner modifications of either less weight being held or a variation in body positioning - like knees on floor for push-ups) at least 5 times a week, sometimes 6 times a week. Maybe a month. I don't know.
I still feel that I don't have the best diet because there are occasions when I have candy, or when I pig out, or eat unhealthy food (like papa johns pizza) for dinner.
Changes so far:
I don't think I look much different or weigh any different. My abs and arms might look a little more toned, that's all I've noticed.
I do feel stronger, which partly might be psychological.
I feel more muscle endurance when doing things like climbing stairs or carring groceries - and part of this is probably becuase I have more muscle confidence, if that makes sense. I'm more used to my muscles feeling like they have to work, so somehow anything in everyday life is easier because at least it's not one of the workouts. Y'know?
There is some part of my body that is constantly a little sore.
Since these workouts are so short, you don't have to skip any days to recover.
Nuzzolese
08-12-2011, 10:33 AM
I bet if I was really dieting well I'd have lost more weight by now and probably look more toned, even feel better.
I've always heard from medical professionals that healthy diet is more important than exercise when it comes to the amount of fat on your body and how good you look. You can potentially burn tons of calories working out and then just eat them back up again in an hour. Also, the effects of whatever exercise you do can only be helped or hindered by your diet.
You eat better so you have more energy to workout harder so you build more muscle which burns more calories which you then don't eat more of so you look better.
I don't know, it's not good to focus on appearances though. The types of people I like would prefer to have a friend or girlfriend or wife who is spontaneous and fun and lighthearted and maybe has a bit of jelly on her thighs or a tummy bulge because she likes to go out for wings sometimes and bake cupcakes - rather than a friend.gf.wife who looks perfect but can only follow a strict and unwavering diet/workout regime.

That's where I'm at. I've put on a couple pounds (10 at the most) over the course of this relationship, but to be fair I was pretty skinny when I started dating my dude and could probably have used it. I'm in pretty good shape now, doing cardio barre stuff and biking and running very regularly, and I can feel myself getting stronger and more flexible...but no weight has really come off. I'm finally okay with that for the most part. I know I'm pretty healthy overall, damnit. And I know my guy would be very very sad if I stopped going out to eat with him, cooking him delicious foods, or enjoying the occasional drink with him. Fun is just too much fun (y)

I'm now noticing that I'm looking a little different. So, I guess that means that with a normal healthy diet with a few extra tastey treats here and there, this routine seems to show effects after a month or a little over a month.
I love this, no gym, no money spent. It's awesome.
But here's the thing: changing your routine, it can bother people. They think it's boring and annoying that I have to exercise right after work every day. I get hassled like "why do you have to exercise EVERY DAY! . you're obsessed and it's not healthy." I try to explain that these are short workouts, I'm not obsessed, I enjoy it and it IS healthy. Does this sound unhealthy to you because I think it sounds normal!

No way. I work out almost every day right after work, and I've turned a corner with running - it's amazing how much easier it is now and it feels AWESOME. But I'm training for a mud run so I have an excuse. are you turning them down to go out because of this? if so, can't you just do it later when you get home then? i think the whole point of the short and sweet workouts are so you CAN do other things instead of it.

I don't know, people just have to have a problem with something. If I don't want to eat something because it has too many calories, people give me a hard time about that, too.

I get the business from friends when I won't go out because I don't want to be sauced up and tired for class the next morning.

^Nobody wants to hear about you getting or giving the business!
And you just learn to ignore people complaining about your diet. As long as you don't berate them on THEIR choices (not saying you do, in fact I'm sure you don't Nuzz, hi I like you), what the fuck is their problem?

Totally. In short, I think a lot of people are just haters. I want my body to operate like an efficient machine; so I dont get out of breath going up and down stairs and I dont get sick all the time. Being healthy and body conscious is good for you. The people sitting there eating doritoes and criticizing your concern for your own health secretly hate themselves.

just because i love me some dorito's doesn't mean i secretly hate myself

My hate for myself is public, my love for doritos is secret.
I was thinking about BMI, Body Mass Index, and the range for a healthy adult. Don't you think that a healthy BMI should allow for a margin for potential sudden weightloss from sickness? I think it should. I think a healthy person is someone who, if they suddenly dropped up to 10 lbs because of parasites or flu, they'd still be okay. I think the BMI possibily dips too low sometimes and someone on the edge of being underweight shouldn't be considered healthy because they have no margin of loss. If something happened to them, they could really be in trouble of internal organ damage because they don't have enough weight to spare. What do you think?
(this spare weight for potential loss, ideally would be mostly muscle mass, right?)

i completely agree with that.
and bmi is totally worthless.
some spare fat is what everyone is suppose to have especially females for child rearing.
im probably in the best cardio shape than everyone i know from all the biking. but i have a gut. does that make me unhealthy?

according to bmi i'd have to weigh 140-188 lbs to be considered "healthy". my weight fluctuates from 180-200 depending on how much exercise i get throughout the year. 140lbs is way too skinny for someone that's 6'1"-6'2". bmi is definitly skewed on the skinny side. if i weighed 140lbs i'd be dead. and im totally fine at 200lbs even though it's considered "overweight".
