Maybe someone in this forum can help me out:
For the last 2 years Iīm producing a music documentary, mainly for film-festivals worldwide. Right now iīm in the stage of post-production, and I like to use a Song from The Beastie Boys to underlay.
Sadly this is a low-budget movie without any film fundings, so I donīt have that much budget to spent on music rights, and I donīt want to go through the whole process of several labels, several collecting societys etc etc.
But of course I also donīt like to use the song without any permission, so maybe someone on this message board have an idea how i can get in email contact with one of the three guys personal, or maybe somebody who is a close friend? so i can write them the basics of the documentary and a songrequest personally...
Thank you in advance for your efforts!

Okay my reply was admittedly a little cheeky, but the information is there. What the hell do you think you are looking for, if not their management?

Here's a real tip, free of charge. Unfortunately, that's just not how it works. The Beastie Boys may own shares of their publishing through Brooklyn Dust Music, but publishing only accounts for half of the underlying copyright in any piece of recorded music (the composition). So, hypothetically, even if they were to control 100 percent of the copyright in the composition and were willing to grant you a gratis license for the use of the composition, you'd still only be halfway there. In order to use the actual recording of the song, you also need permission from the owner of the sound recording copyright, which is almost always the record label.
Labels and publishing companies do negotiate step deals that require increased payments based on the distribution or success of the film, but you will almost never be able to secure a license through a record company for anything near what you'd be able to afford without a music budget already funded.
By the way, this advice is merely an opinion and does not establish an attorney-client relationship.

First of all, thanks for your serious replys.
Johnny, you are right in this copyright issue, BUT:
I already received admissions for songs from labels without paying one cent (from both indies and majors).
This can happen when the Artist intervene at the label, when itīs an old song, not something like the actual single, etc etc.
When the Beasties ownes their own publishing company, theirs even a greater chance, maybe they are open for this project and support it.
I know what you mean, and I know that this is not the most professional way, but otherwise, when I always listen to people who tell me that this is wrong, and that cannot happen, i would never start (and almost finish) a huge project like this....

Depending on the song you're talking about, it looks like publishing is split between Brooklyn Dust Music and Universal. Same contact info, though. Remember, publishing rights only adress the musical composition and not the sound recording. Anyway, this is a good place to start. Good luck.

no, of course not, from most of the bands iīve interviewed for this documentary, i had private contact details from members from the band or at least the manager.
but i have no interview from the beastie, i just like to use parts of a song.
And i didnīt said that i got free music from EVERY band but from MOST of the bands.
i already mentioned it before that this is not the usual way to get things done, but sometimes things happen the unusual way (but iīm afraid, not at this message board..;-((
