The stronger the resistance, the more powerful the current.
The higher the pendulum swings one way, the harder it will swing back.
I've only just thought this recently but about 90% of the time I can use these two theories/explanations to understand most of the shit that goes on in the world.

you really believe there's a balance in the universe and that karma exists? Where is the balance when some people live horrible miserable painful existences and others have luxury? Will the sufferers be rewarded in heaven, is that what you think? Will those who committed crimes in life and never paid for them be reincarnated as worms? No. I believe there is no order but what we imagine. There is chaos. The balance we percieve is but a shadow of reality, a trick of the light to keep us sane, and like a shadow it is just as insubstantial and transient.

And I suppose that is what philosophy really is. Adopting a philosophy is a decision to pick whichever window you want to look through in life, whichever view makes life tolerable. It doesn't have to be truth, in fact it could never be truth because there is no dominating truth of life. So, you can pick a window and decide it's the only real window while others are just tromp l'oeil paintings. This is dogmatic. You can choose a window and know there are others and that they are all tromp l'oeil. This is selecting peace. You can paint your own window, believe it's real and try to jump out and end up smacking your head against the wall of your mind. This is insanity.

Those two posts were highly reactionary and slightly misguided. Has something in this thread spiked your ire thus? For an example, the point you made about wealth and poverty affirms my theory: The more above the breadline one group of people live > the more below it the others become.
It is a common misconception that karma creates a state of balance. It is merely the notion that every action has a reaction; good begets good, evil begets evil. It's an incredibly logical idea.
It's not dogma or gospel, it's my philosophy. I haven't adopted it from anywhere, I've formed it myself. Sure it incorporates accepted ideas, so does pretty much everything- I'm not claiming to be Socrates. Some of the greatest thinkers of all time were philosophers, it's just the human mind's best attempts to grasp and interpret the world around us.

Yeah but in what ways? I'm interested here.
A few examples:
Credit boom / Credit crunch
Second World War / Baby boom
Obama's Presidency / Tea Party
Any political uprising against a former dictator
Also, the media has swung from right to left and back again several times in the last 30 years in this country- often in parallel to the ruling government/consensus of belief.

not trying to pick a fight...but even if you don't agree with the theories, historically speaking, it's reasonable to be at least respectful...or at least aware of the impact philosophy has in the development of society.

Are you aware of how contradictory you are? This is a prime example of what's wrong with the US today. People act like they're so open-minded, but when they hear opinions that differ from their own, they go on the defensive. So you're humble enough to always learn, but if something dissents from your personal opinion it's bullshit from a "bullshit artist" because you stand strong to your beliefs?
I focused on Epistemology quite a bit in college. Hume, Husserl, and Locke always struck a chord with me. When I was younger, I was always scared to admit that I enjoyed reading the parts of Heidegger's Being and Time that I read from class since he was a Nazi, but his writing (more existential) was pretty fucking enthralling.

Speak your mind, chances are more things will go your way.

Nope. But I don't see how doing both wouldn't help you live a better life.
Why are you in circles or why don't you have a circle where you can speak your mind and be you? Why are you letting yourself be quiet?
I don't think work, especially since work can be hard to find today, is a realistic place to surround yourself with positive people unless you perhaps own your own company. You have to work with people who are lazy, aholes, work differently then you, or tell you what to do when you know better. Still doesn't mean you can't speak your mind.

Nuzz's clip which made fun of philosophers for doing nothing
Is that what they were saying, that philosophers do nothing? I thought it was just being silly.
"The Germans are disputing it. Hegel is arguing that the reality is merely an a priori adjunct of non-naturalistic ethics, Kant via the categorical imperative is holding that ontologically it exists only in the imagination, and Marx is claiming it was offside."

No, you missed it again. I am open and willing to learn new things, admit that I do not know everything, concede that there are smarter people than me, but I will decide my own mind. The "bullshit artist" line was just that, a line from the clip. As far as anything else from philosophers, I like to listen to them, it is fun, but I seriously was thinking of a lot that stuff high I was 15, and getting high.

Exactly what am I missing? You equating centuries worth of original thought to you getting high at 15? Or saying philosophers are just people just trying to sound important? Newflash, you drip, many of the greatest philosophers were slaves to their thoughts and ideals, were very reclusive, and many died before they gained any notoriety. The fact that there's kids out there that learn from you scares the shit out of me.
Jesus Christ.
Myu-to

I guess I should have said people that go around discussing philosophers today are just trying to make themselves seem self-important. There are kids needing texts books, school supplies, and mother fuckin' food. It doesn't matter what Plato said if a child can't read or comprehend it. To me, there are much better uses of educational funding than philosophy courses. There are much better uses of time to help children who are at risk today than discussing and debating centuries old thinking.
Close your mouth, roll up your sleeves, and do some work. That's my philosophy, I'm a slave to it.
And, it's because I am smart enough to see the problem, and selfless enough to actually do something about it, to put the future of other people ahead of my own, that you should actually be thanking Jesus Christ that I am teacher.

Sounds like you should do a few things to learn to overcome that. There are of books you can read. A book that helped me a lot was "To Nice for your Own Good." I learned to be assertive versus aggressive which was eye opening. Just one eye. Joining the fire department at work helped as well but not everyone has that option. I no longer wait for someone to react, I am the person that will react first.
If you think you are going to make yourself look like a dick, you are setting yourself up for failure. If you think you are getting better or can articulate what you want to say, chances are you will.
Namaste.
