this post has nothing to do with what is going on at the moment. this (the article) is in relation to cuts back in march. i suppose you could draw the comparison that a protest has again been hijacked and resulted in riots, though that would be a very simplistic analysis.

to cut a long story short - and i'm not at home (England) at the moment - a man was shot dead by police in Tottenham, north London, who was allegedly gang-affiliated, crack dealing, and gun-carrying, as well as firing first at police officers who were following him. i don't know if these are all facts but it's what has been reported.

as a result, a protest by in relation to the mans death was held on Friday night at Tottenham. with the aid of various youths this protest, which began peacefully, then turned into a riot, with police being attacked and shops being looted. the ensuing night saw copy cat riots breaking out in other districts in London, notably the more impoverished regions. and then last night further riots escalated among other cities in England, the likes of Birmingham and Liverpool. both of which have riot history.

in my opinion these have little to nothing to do with the initial incident. some have put it down to mindless chavs with nothing to do venting out their pitiful lives on innocent shop owners and honest police, fire brigade and ambulance workers. other views are that it's down to deeper and longer-lasting problems in regards to communication and relationships between the police and the local community. there's plenty more theories. i think it's embarrassing for England, which prides itself on being a civilized country, and i think it affects far too many people who have nothing to do with rioters complaints. complaints which may not even exist in some instances. it'll kick off again tonight, unfortunately.

I'm no stranger when it comes to unethical police tactics and brutality but, I also know that there are times when police DO have to kill someone in the line of duty. I think certain people are using this as an excuse to act like animals...

This.

They also initially reported that the man was unarmed, hence the unrest. A 16 year old girl was also (allegedly) beaten by police in the following peaceful protest in Hackney.

Police predicted there would be a spark (this time it was assassination by police of a local black youth in Tottenham) and that something like this would happen around August (because of the heat, holidays and just the general month of nothing to do), they was just slow to react even though it was predicted earlier in the year.

UK has had to have cuts like everyone else and now there is nothing to lose by young people who feel that the haves aren't sharing enough with the have nots. Other reasons too like they already feel like criminals and it doesn't take much for someone who feels like a criminal to start acting like one.

Police also have low morale. They are cutting the police force, every public service is stretched. if you was a police officer and asked to risk your life with a ratio of 10:1 against you but you also remember you might not have a job next year, you're gonna think fudge that, let it burn even if your morals say you shouldn't.

It is a very sad day though, I'm all for anarchy as much as the next person but against those who are the true enemy. Individuals and the small businesses aren't to blame but indiscriminate attacks have now erupted, the message is lost, the state wins again, all the deep routed issues will be ignored. Repeat in 5 years.

While I admire the UK/London for having a police force that doesn't carry sidearms, etc., It was about time to bring the tear gas and other non lethal methods to scatter the crowd by the second night. Looting is one thing but starting fires and attacking innocents is another. Do what you have to do to remind people that just because you don't see a hammer on a daily basis, that its there and when it comes down, it comes down hard.

this is all horrible. I don't understand how this has been going on for days now. Use some force already! I can't picture this happening in Boston. Maybe a night of riots, but then that shit would be shut down.

that video of the Malaysian student is horrible. what is wrong with people?

hope all returns to normal soon.

Absolutely without a doubt. Chicago would have been locked the fuck down immediately.

I blame the parents. (http://nathanieltapley.com/2011/08/10/an-open-letter-to-david-camerons-parents/)

And yes, America would of been shut down quicker than the UK, no-one is disputing that. But how many more would of died by the hands of authority for freedom? Europe is a different culture to the USA (and I think the states forget that sometimes - we all don't want to be you btw) but don't think riots could never happen in the USA... It couldn't happen here... etc check the history books and look to your future.

I love america and the american people - friendly and often very cheery (if you ignore all those that are TV) but a lot of commentators saying how uncivilised europeans are is a bit rich, just because restraint is offered doesn't make full force tactics, shock & awe methods better. Just different with different consequences.

First and foremost, we are well aware of the fact that it can and has happened here (http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20080101092601AAfEu2V)....and, unfortunately, in time, some event is going to set off some more shit. We are not blind to that fact. The whole attitude of Europeans being "uncivilized" because of recent events is new to me. That honestly hasn't crossed my mind once. We have the same calibur of knuckleheaded assholes over here, believe me. When it comes to tearing up shit, we have raised it to an artform.

I was just simply saying that in this country, that shit would have been over by now. I'm not saying the end result would be any better than over there. There would have been a hell of a lot more casualties. But the looting and pillaging and shit would have put on ice by now.

Ok, point well made and taken. America have a way of coming across like "well that country is fucked up maybe we should go and tell them how it should be run/invade it to sort it out"

I was probably on the defensive a bit. I'm a bit pissed off with it all because this country needed a spark and a fight back but it's gone horribly wrong and we've put ourselves in a worse place than we was before.

couldn't have said it any better. this is what I was thinking with my above post as well...not that America is better and needs to "fix" whatever in EU.

This was a perfect chance for the collective voice of the people to not only be heard, but to be listened to, and now that chance has been shot to hell.

I would be pretty fucking pissed if I were you, too, Adam. No worries, my friend.
