it's being held at a country club.
last time i went to a wedding i was 12. i hate dressing up. im a jeans and t-shirt kinda guy. obviously can't wear that to a wedding.
im thinking basic shit. khakis or slacks, collared shirt(could i get away with a polo?) and some dress shoes. i'd have to buy the shoes as the ones i have now are like 10 years old. possibly would have to buy everything else as well seeing as i wear out my clothes way beyond being wedding presentable.
fuck. what about socks? do people give a shit about socks? all i fucking have are gym socks.
i hate this shit. why can't people just get married without having to invite people to it.

Black and white speedo! Or T-shirt tuxedo.
Ok, Ok.....
Black dockers (you can get by with Khaki), white shirt (Button down with collar, long sleeves), black tie, black socks and shoes.. If you go with Khaki colored dockers, different colored tie is ok, brown shoes also ok.
Just think Men in Black, but lose the jacket.
Hit up Marshalls, Burlington Coat Factory, Ross (Dress for Less!!), or something similar. Should be able to put together the whole deal for less than $100. Shoes will be the expensive part, hit up Payless shoes, and get some $20 nice looking shoes.
I always secretly wished the 99cent only stores would start selling clothes.
OHHHHH, there's always thrift stores for the Pants, Shirt and Tie... Never buy shoes/socks/Underwear there (This should need no explanation)
So now you're at about $25.... Thrift store, +Payless for the shoes. Ta Daa!!!!!

As long as you are not standing up in the wedding you will be fine.
Get your haircut and shave. Wear a white button down and a tie. Any kind of dark pants will do and dark shoes, too. Airwalks, Vans, Nikes, whatever. Just dark.
Show up, pay your respects to the happy couple and then hole up at the open bar and proceed to get blitzed whilst deciding which bridesmaid seems the least trashy.
edit-or most trashy, depending upon your taste
edit again-Silence 7 beat me to the post so we were thinking basically the same thing. I wasn't copying what he said.

i definitely want some decent looking dress shoes. they can be cheap as shit as long as they look nice.
i would like to skip the tie as much as possible. im gonna be bored out of my mind and will most likely be complaining to myself about the shit music so i want to be atleast comfortable.
and everyone will be trying to get me shit faced. i refuse to drink around my family as they'd drink every god damn day if it didn't get in the way of work and such.
i really don't understand this kinda shit and why people think it's fun or necessary. it seems like such a chore. why can't we all just go to the beach or something. that seems so much better. or just go to some nice park and get shitfaced and eat hamburgs and hotdogs. not at all classy but so much more fun!

I'm totally with you on this point, I'm a hiking, mountain biking, dirt sports type person. Last fancy thing I went to was the company President's birthday party at a country club, I was told I needed to wear a jacket, tie, etc, and look nice. I have a lot of respect for this guy, he's treated me like a Son for years. So, I go out, spend close to 3 bills on nice clothes, shoes, etc... Now that stuff sits in my closet as a reminder of how dumb it was. Great party, good times etc.... But everyone else showed up in Dockers and Polo shirts, I felt way over dressed. (Even though I was told that this was a "Fancy" party)
Do the thrift store deal max, or just throw on your fanciest duds, I'm sure you'll be fine.

I got married on a beach!
You could always rent everything. Well, bar the shirt and shoes, I guess.
You can take your tie off later and stuff it in your pocket.
I don't know how formal you have to be, given that it's being held at a country club, where they might have some sort of dress code.
I've rarely managed to get my husband into one of those dinner jacket set ups--he ususally wears a heavy cotton white shirt, long, not tucked in, over black jeans. He looks pretty smart. He still uses the same smart shoes he's had since he was at uni.
I can imagine you'd look good in a tux. Think of it as raiding a dressing up box and have fun.
Have I convinced you yet ...?

You've never dressed smart? Mostly people wear suits to weddings, not even a tuxedo just a normal lounge suit, you have one of these? I'm guessing no, but you can hire one. Surely a dress code must have been disseminated?
Anyway, just saying, but if you turn up under dressed when everyone is really smart, you'll feel awkward as fuck all night as you cut around in dark jeans and black sneakers with everyone in shiny shoes and dress pants. At the very least I'd say go for some black or dark grey dress pants ($50 maybe), black polished shoes (again, probably about $50) and a white (or other light coloured) collared shirt. You can have the collar open no worries, just make sure you wear a belt that matches the colour of your shoes.
Oh yeah, dark or black socks.

I do agree actually, years ago i'd have said wear what you like and screw the dress code as much as you can get away with. But i like to dress up...usually to look ridiculous....but it's good to step out of your comfort zone sometimes. Wear a good suit, hire it if you don't want to splash out, go all out on the matching shit. Blokes can look hot in a good suit so it may well go in your favour. Think how good the beasties look in a suit.

Weddings make me wanna puke!
I've been a witness once, next time I'll ask a lot of money just to make me wear tiny shoes.
Another time, I caught the flowers bouquet, I mean it fell on me so I caught it, then a stranger approched me and said "sorry" and I said I am sorry for your face, you gonna eat that bouquet.
Then at the same wedding, the mother of the wed comes close and tells me: poor girl, the only thing left for you is to get married by a rich fat man!(n)
great times!!!!!!!!!!!!!

^hahaha! Yeah, don't wear a polo, man.
Weddings can be great! Free food and drinks, man.
Dressing up is nice when you put a little effort into it. It's fun to feel fancy. I really respect when a guy cleans up well. You don't have to look like a tool doing it.
Urban Outfitters and H&M are good places to get cheap staples like what you're talking about. My boyfriend got a suit at H&M for about $100 and it looks amazing on him. He got it tailored so it fits extra nice. Granted, he and I go to fancy events a couple of times a year through his work, but I think every man should have at least one well-fitted suit.

i usually wear a black suit with a white shirt and just ditch the jacket if its a summertime thing.
i also refuse to wear a tie. for anything. because they are ridiculous.

yes! a turd makeover! you have to take pictures!
anyway, you should dress like this: http://0.tqn.com/d/prom/1/0/p/0/-/-/shia.jpg
this fit is neat and tailored, but loose-fitting, so it'd be comfortable. The fabric here is too shiny, but gray is a good summer suit color. If you don't want to go stripes, you could go with a plain white shirt, ironed.
If you get a more casual fabric, like cotton (something like this: http://uncrate.com/p/2008/04/jcrew-cotton-suit.jpg), you could even get away with wearing shoes like this: http://www.payless.com/store/product/detail.jsp?catId=cat10089&subCatId=cat10295&skuId=063268100&productId=60504&lotId=063268&category=&catdisplayName=Mens
If you wore that, with some sweet shades: http://www.menaviatorsunglasses.com/mensaviators.jpg
or http://www.ray-ban.com/international/products/sun/icons?sbf=wayfarer&vw=grid
you will look pretty cool, but be classic and comfortable. and you could probably just do whatever with your hair. if it's long, don't be clean-shaven. it just looks weird. and opposite, if your haircut is really short and/or neat, you should be clean shaven.
I'm guessing unshaven and messy hair would be the easiest for a dude.
Trick is finding a suit...print out pictures and take them with you to suit places. cut off the guys' heads if you're worried about seeming weird carrying around a bunch pictures of guys in suits. It will help a salesperson find you exactly what you want before they start trying to sell you what they want you to buy.
Not sure what the selection's like at a rental place, but check that out too.
also, it's not that big a deal once it's done, and that look will probably serve you for at least the next 10 years of formal things. unless we're all wearing space suits by then.
p.s. everyone! scroll to the bottom of these search results! http://www.gq.com/search?qt=dismax&sort=score+desc&query=what+do+I+wear+to+a+wedding&submit=

look at a thrift store, you could easily find a plain dress shirt at a thrift store, and check a rental place for just a plain gray suit. or do you have Forever21? or H&M like cosmo said? they have cheap stuff...not sure about the selection though.
right now at department stores there'll be a lot of stuff on clearance because they're clearing out summer clothes.
if you have zero dress clothes, and you don't want to wear a suit, just get nice plain dress pants and wear them with a dress shirt tucked in. gray pants, white shirt, brown belt, brown shoes. (this color brown: http://www.amishleathers.com/brown_belt_nickel.jpg)
You could probably find all of this stuff at a thrift store, or on sale somewhere. it would best if everything fit well, so you don't look sloppy. but as long as everything is crisply ironed and not stained, you should be fine.

Dude, you do NOT need dockers. You;ve got the general idea though
We know you're trying to not give a fuck so in the spirit of not thinking too much about it and in the spirit of dockers. wanna make it easy and no frills? just rock a nice shirt, like you say - i would go white (generic and classic) if i were feeling like that - go with a dark jacket/sport coat and some sort of neat and dark jeans. But definately a coat. Feels a bit disrespectful to not at a wedding
Not too formal, about as stylish and effort demanding as dockers, acceptable and kind of you - saying you kind of can;t be bothered in a not too thoughful way.
And if you go with this dont wear shiny shoes (y) boom,,, easy

and some random black socks
fuck the tie
pants are very hard for me to buy because my thighs are so big. this must be what it's like for you ladies...
i have to go up one size in the waste in order to get them over my thighs. this usually means that i also have to go up in length. so i was stuck with 36-34. someone my size would normally wear 34-32. they're too long but that's all i could find. you can never find 36-32. maybe i can get someone to shorten them for me.
whoa i just realized i bought everything from the same brand... i just chose from whatever was on sale. ha
