I use it, but not because I want to. I feel like I have to because it's what everybody does on twitter. :/ I thought it was strange hearing on the VMA's them tell us to tweet them with a hash tag about what we thought of the show. My have times changed.

it has to do with trending and shit. i dont know exactly how it works but roughly...putting the # in front of something "makes it eligible" for a lack of a better explanation, to trend. something trends when a lot of people are talking about something and using the # before identifying something.

You don't have to use Twitter if you don't like it.

Just think of it as a twitter keyword. Something that people feel is important in their twitter post, something people might search for.

So in my case, (Even though I never use hashtags)

@djXXXXX, released a new #remix tonight... Check it out here

Twitter user "djXXXXX" released a "remix" people searching for #remix will find the post faster.

Using it "#" on sites other than twitter is just stupid and serves no purpose.

However signing a post on a non-twitter site with something like @beastiemixes informs the reader, beastiemixes is on twitter, and if I want to send him/her a message, I will use @beastiemixes.

That is, if I've got all my twitter facts straight. I rarely "tweet" anything, but I follow interesting people, and that's how I like to use it. To me it's just an RSS feed of news from people I'm interested in.

It's been creeping into facebook posts recently, i'm guessing that post will just go to all social networks that person is signed in on. I couldn't do twitter, i've just had to delete a load of people off facebook who constantly update their every thought, move, whatever. I just want to keep in touch with friends easily, not know which A road some random is travelling along.

i fell out with twitter, well i got bored of it and pissed off that some people are just not worth following cos they either tweet too much or not enough or just boring stuff. There is nothing sadder on twitter than someone making a comment and sticking a #before it so you click on it and no other fucker has bothered.

i occasionally check it out but as with all social media, i like them a lot less than i like being on the bbmb, even though its a bit quiet now. Fuck facebook in the ear.

i know exactly how hash tags work but i'm just barely too cool to admit it so yeah i totally agree that this is gay or whatever we're all agreeing about

My have times changed.

Sometimes it creeps into facebook because apps on your phone will post to both. I've done it without realising so sometimes your twitter mirrors your facebook. When I first used twitter I did use it as another facebook until I realised it isn't.

I like to keep up with good friends and family who aren't local or live abroad on facebook but i like the anonimity here, rather than just being a fairly average looking 37 year old mum of two i can be a super hot, scientistic, mega social scened, fun addicted young thing. Oh no, that's not gonna work....

I post about pop culture and news. The hastag I use a lot of the Beastie Boys news because it does bring attention to the band and I do whatever I can to promote them. Connecting face-book, twitter, tumblr, it’s all a bit tooooooooo much for me. Everything is so fast pace and I like to take my time and enjoy shit. I feel I can’t do that.

Up until a few years ago I was still calling it 'the tic-tac-toe sign'. Then I started calling it the 'pound' sign.

In any case, my wife is in social media networking and I know she uses something called TweetDeck which will update Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, Google Buzz, My Space and Four Square all with the same post simultaneously. So if she uses the pound sign for a post on Twitter, it will also show up on the rest of the other sites.

Twitter is cooool yo.

I get a lot of good sports/music/news info from it, along with just general comedy. Following the right people/"people" is the key

My Sis' signed up for an account, hasn't posted anything, but uses it for news and info from people/sites/groups she's into.

Weird thing, she has like 5 "followers" without posting a single thing.
