Either choke, or explode on sight after losing to SA
Any team from the six nations (Ireland) would be sick to win

fuck you all
Caught the opener and all but the last 8 mins of France Vs. Japan so far (I assume France won in the end?).
My favourite part so far has been the Hakka (don't care who traditionally does it etc, it's all good to me). But as in the football world cup I find myself supporting Japan because they always seem so gutsy when they are never anywhere near the favourite. The fact that Japan do play rugby at an international level is pretty surprising.

i am sort of half english and half welsh, especially when it comes to rugby but its going to be SA v NZ final.
why is it surprising about japan?
why is it surprising about japan?
I suppose NZ and Japan are pretty close and kinda mix a lot but Japan doesn't seem like the country to embrace such a physical sport. Football is non-contact, I totally get that - a typical Japanese build is light and quick, rugby generally requires larger builds. It surprises me the USA haven't got a team actually, you'd think it'd be totally there thing.
I will admit I know very little of rugby though, I know England won it once in the last 10 years (I assume 8 years ago) but it's not a sport where I've ever fully picked up the rules and not one I imagine I'll ever play.

the All Blacks should win it, but that's pretty much the way it's been every world cup, and yet they've choked. they're the top ranked team, the favourites and it's on home soil. but look at the tri-nations, they lost the last 2 matches against the Springboks and Wallabies. sign of another failure to come???
the springboks could win it if they get their act together. i think they're the best team on paper but Frank De Villilers is fucking retarded. no way i'd ever split up a combo like Steyn and Du Preez
the wallabies probably will win, or lose to England in the quarters or semis AGAIN! at least there's no Giteau in the team to fuck things up AGAIN!
France dont have Sebastien Chabel, so they're fucked:)
i haven't really paid too much attention to the northern hemisphere teams. in my mind because the top 3 ranked teams all almost always the Tri Nation teams i assume one of them will always win the world cup.
oh and i still hate JOHNNY FUCKING WILKINSON!

australia look dangerous. robbie deans, as much as i hate him, is a genius coach and his backline is as good as the ABs (if not better). add to that, the fact that pocock may be better than mccaw right now...it all makes me rather nervous. the ABs advantage over the wallabies has always been our forward pack. we need to dominate otherwise we may lose. this is all assuming we end up playing the aussies at some point, but if there's one team that bothers me it's you bastards.
england...they were looking quite good at the end of last year. i thought johnson was building nicely. they werent the best v argentina though.
the SA v wales games is delicate. wales look sharp. i have tickets to that game but am not there to go.
who else...france? always a threat. ireland....not too worried about them to be honest. they might pull of an upset, but won't be able to pull off two or three in a row to win the whole thing.
re: japan, they have a ton of people in their country and some of the dudes there are quite big. also, there's enough money in their professional league to attract good players from overseas. not necessarily the top players, but enough ABs (and good S14 players) have gone there in the past. and their coach is john kirwan.
Guy Incognito

england got hammered about 30 odd-0 in first game in last world cup and still made the final so i will take a narrow win against the argies.

EDIT: John Kirwan for the win.
Also, I always back the Irish to do it, and every cup they let me down.

It surprises me the USA haven't got a team actually, you'd think it'd be totally there thing. It could be those short-shorts rugby players wear - our Puritan past frowns on such things. ;):D Seriously though, I'm not criticizing rugby because the sport I was part of back in college has a uniform that is so politically-incorrect - "oh my I can see his parts!" (http://www.flowrestling.org/coverage/234448-The-Virginia-Duals/video/116387-149lbs-Steve-Brown-Central-Michigan-vs-Trevor-Chinn-Lehigh-) - that all by itself literally keeps some people from joining the team.....but man are they missing out on a fun sport! Btw if they had rugby back when I was in high school, I would have seriously considered trying out for it.

I didn't realise they had a team until after I wrote that. Kinda assumed they didn't because nothing in this thread had been said about them yet although it was only about 5 posts in.

wait aren't NFL shorts skin tight? or have american movies been lying to me?Yes our football players' football pants are of the body-hugging variety but the top (i.e. the jersey) is pretty loose, so I guess to many Americans when they see them *together* the end result is an acceptable uniform.
oh and dont knock Stubbies until you've tried them. they're the most comfortable things in the world. mind you i never wear them outside the house!Oh I never said they weren't comfortable. And from a sports point of view, they seem like they allow great freedom-of-movement which is what is important out on the field because looks/styling is definitely a secondary consideration to serious athletes (btw for practice sessions, many college & high school wrestling teams here are starting to adopt the use of those body-hugging shorts like mma fighters wear - baggy/long shorts can interfere with certain techniques - but it looks like until most of the older governing body officials retire they probably won't be allowed for use during official competitons).

i really like the way the irish play rugby, there was a great game between us and them on the 2009 summer tour that ended in a 20 all draw. however it should be a pretty straight forward win for us. ireland have been playing like shite over the past year and except for Digby Ioane we'll have a full strength squad that just won the tri-nations. i just bloody hope they dont let James O'connor take the conversions. That's the wallabies biggest weakness. when SA have morne steyn and NZ have dan carter, we cant make up our fucking minds.
ARG v SCO should be a good one.
NZL JPN are on in a bit. This is the first match I've decided to watch rather than just catching it by accident. I want to see an upset as I just enjoyed watching Japan other day. And I know a couple of Kiwi's who'll be upset. ha.

well it's not impossible. it's looking like the top half of the finals draw will be made up of six nations teams and the bottom half tri-nations and argentina. they've gotta be pretty confident playing against teams they play and win against more consistently. that's assuming everything else goes to plan, but there'll probably be another upset or 2 this world cup
Watching Tonga-Japan right now. What I like about rugby is when they're given an infringement against them they don't argue at all really and just get on with it. Footballers tend to throw their toys around, cry and generally look like a big sissy. The referees tend to have the respect of the players too - football should look into why it can happen in rugby but not in football.
I'm enjoying this cup even though I have no clue how England are doing in it as I've yet to see a game by them - it's just nice to see good free sport on television (y)

yeah, this is pretty much the reason i dont watch soccer anymore, i got sick soccer players acting like little fucking cry babies every time they were touched. it's a contact sport, harden up ffs! there was a match were Quade Cooper spear tackled Morne Steyn, it was a dangerous move so instead of staying on the ground and crying like a little bitch Morne got up straight away looked at the ref and was like wtf? that's the way things should be handled. the referees are not idiots, soccer players need to treat them with respect and not act like little bitches.
Anyway, Wallabies vs USA, AGAIN it's been delayed because of the fucking rugby league! just hurry up and fucking lose Brisbane Broncos dirty mofos
Oh yeah, last night Bryan Habana FINALLY got his 39th try after being stuck on 38 for what like at least a year? he hasn't impressed me so far this world cup, springboks should start Chilliboy in the first 15 purely for the fact he has the maddest name in the competition(y)

I think England should beat France. Even though we've not set the world alight, we are winning games and, although it seems silly to say such a thing in a sport like rugby, digging deep.
It gives me hope the way the front row turned it round at half time against the Scots. And it isn't all about the kicking game; I think Ashton and Cueto (if he gets on) have plenty more tries in them in the instances where England become a little more expansive.
I am a little worried that Delon Armitage will probably be banned... His ability to retain / gain possession under pressure at the back has been priceless for England so far. Elsewhere, I think Ireland will beat Wales, SA will beat Australia, and NZ will beat Argentina. From there it's anyone's to win.

I'm Welsh (my real name is Gareth too!) and my girlfriend is Australian so it's been quite an emotional world cup overall.
Rugby Union can be an unpredictable game at test level and I can't seem to get enough of it recently. I must have watched at least 50% of the games this world cup - All sorts of matches.
Wales can play some great rugby but all too often fail to secure the right results, but this world cup has definitely been a step in the right direction from my point of view.
(Much to my Aus girlfriend's disgust) I'm happy about NZ winning it (congrats!) as they're the home nation and have wanted it so badly for so long, and obviously they're one of the world's most rugby-obsessed nations, but I'm glad that France at least produced a competitive final.
I'm hugely proud of my team and have really enjoyed the competition this year. I'm looking forward to the next World Cup in 2015.(y)(y)
