* beautiful shining starships will appear in the skies, which turn out to be our ancestors who arrived here thousands of years ago to "seed" the earth with their DNA and are now back to help us with our various problems & create a society based on mutual respect, peace and love and we all live happily ever after

* it will be just another typical December day, though some people won't know that for days because they will be locked up in the underground bunker they dug for protection against the first two possibilities listed above

Btw I wrote those scenarios kinda tongue in cheek, and they were partly based on the sensationalistic ideas :rolleyes: a lot of article and TV shows include.

While my career involves the field of science, specifically the science of the earth and its inner workings, I also know many ancient civilizations were quite educated in their own right despite the lack of computers, slide rules etc. And since they were more connected to the workings of the world around them, partly because they did not have the thick insulation we call technology separating them from it, they were very knowledgeable about subtle things we are just discovering ourselves the past few decades.

I'm pretty sure most people get what that date is but maybe no-one wants to consider it for real!I thought about that too, similar to (maybe) people who live near nuclear power plants don't think too deeply about the accidents that can happen there.How is it that those civilizations knew so much more than us.On the History Channel here, they now have an entire series partly dedicated to that called "Ancient Aliens", where questions like yours are discussed quite often (e.g. how could certain temples 2,000+ years old be built using technology available to cultures back then). I think we may have already hit our highest form of evolving and we're now on the downward spiral.I try to stay positive about our prospects - I think we may be pretty young civilization-wise - but yea, sometimes it's a little difficult to do that.

There are going to be some rare astronomical events associated with that day, if that History Channel doc is to be believed. :) I do believe them though, since that is easily checked and astronomical events are relatively easy to predict using mathematical methods that have been around for centuries.

As I alluded to in my other post, when you read or watch a documentary with a proper scientific treatment of the Mayan calendar, many experts say they don't think anything special will happen on that day and especially, nothing violent. But they do say there *is* some type of significance attached by the Mayans to that day...they just don't know exactly what that would be (which is what a professional scientist says when they don't have all the facts).

But not knowing for sure hasn't stopped a lot of the profit-minded from milking it for all it's worth. :rolleyes:

I was mostly using the word "significance" not to indicate something WOULD happen, but that in general it was a particular date that to many people - e.g. scientists, conspiracy theorists, people with extremely open minds and Regular Joe Citizens - included different scenarios, compared to some other "conventional" date.
