Hey everyone! I have never been to New York before, so I have no idea how to get around. Are there public transportation passes for tourists that can get you places? I'm pretty much traveling alone and staying at a friend's place. Pretty sure she uses some sort of student pass for trains and stuff, but I don't know what to do myself.

Hope this (http://gonyc.about.com/od/gettingaround1/a/metrocards.htm) helps. Have a good time and what ever you do, be aware of your surroundings. Don't walk down the street with a map sticking out of your pocket or anything like that. And be careful who you ask for directions. Some asshole in Brooklyn tried to send me off on some bullshit once.
edit: Don't get me wrong....New York is a great place. Lots of fun. In fact, I found the people there nicer than the people here in Chicago. But still, don't do anything that screams 'tourist'.

That's not relevant at all if you're in Manhattan. Its crawling with tourists and totally safe as long as you stay below, say, 96th street.

im not from New York, and the first time was there I got a metro card for the day and realized, shit I should of bought a week pass and saved big. Unless you have unlimited funds ... fuck the cabs, they will bleed you dry after a week.
I walked all over the place and road the metro, even walked down allies in the middle of the night lost and never had a problem, but not sure I recommend it ... fucking GPS...
My favorite thing was eating. I never had a full meal, but a ate at 6+ restaurants per day and had several small meals.
Wish I was there ... enjoy

That's exactly where we stayed!! We found a woman online with a brownstone who rents out rooms (we were only there for about four or five days). We were right off of 126th and Lennox. Harlem is cool. Just be extra careful at night.

Some crazy Tasmanian tried to rob me of all my belongings in New York, I was wise to her game though. Watch out for Tasmanians!

Well, considering the fact that you live there, I would say that you definitely know New York better than I do so I am not going argue. I said what I said because growing up in Chicago has taught me to never let my guard down no matter where I am in the city. Especially super touristy Michigan Ave. That place is a mecca for pickpockets, boosters, hustlers, scammers and everybody else. Why? Because everybody is walking around looking at the bright lights and tall buildings and not paying attention to what the fuck is going on around them. I've been to Manhattan. Same shit but whatever.

what's not relevant at all is telling them they are safe as long as they stay below 96th street.

John's Brick Oven on Bleeker

It always makes me think of Beaker (http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_20O0OD-wMuc/TCbmi8BzabI/AAAAAAAAAPg/rcOWD5cyQ0I/s400/lyle_beaker.gif) from the Muppets.
One of my favorite New York words is Carnarsie. Don't know why.

That could have something to do with it. It's cute
Maybe also from Pauly Bleeker of Juno fame?

Do cabs take credit cards? Can't say I've ever used one.
hardnox71
09-26-2011, 06:02 AM
Yes, they do. Not every cab may be equipped with the little card swipe machine but considering it's NYC, I would assume that most of them can take cards. Just ask the cabbie before you even get in the cab.

That's almost EXACTLY the same place I'm staying. Adam Clayton Powell and 137th.

So the girl I came down here to see got proposed to by some dude a day before I arrived and now I don't have a clue how to make this not awkward. Pizza cannot fix the trouble I'm in...

So I'm guessing this girl was more than just a friend to you? Did she say yes to the proposal?
KingSpanner
10-15-2011, 05:21 AM
Well, to me she's more than a friend. I came to see if we could make anything out of our just friendship. She said "why not" to the guy. Not a firm yes, but enough to make things odd now for me.

Wow. I'm sorry to hear that, man. Is this the person you are staying with up in Harlem? How long have you been there already and how much longer are you supposed to be there?
edit: The more I think about this the more it's not fitting together for me. She agreed for you to come to New York knowing that you have never been there before and that you were coming to hang out with her, therefore, she would act as your guide, so to speak. She would show you around the city. You guys would go to Coney Island and eat big ass slices of pizza and see Central Park and all that shit. She had to have assumed that's what her role would be. I don't know a lot about how women work but I do know they damn sure don't accept a marriage proposal with "why not?" What I'm thinking is that she's trying to light a fire under your ass for some reason. The timing of all this is just too coincidental to me. Sit her down and talk to her. Find out what's really going on.

I'm here another day. Really, though, it's nothing too crazy because me and her never had a relationship. I'm just hoping she doesn't hate me for flying out here and complicating her life.

If she's a decent friend she certainly won't be pissed at you for coming to see her.
