View Full Version : i think i just realized something about myself

so i've come to accept that people think i'm funny, and i think they're on to something, i think i'm funny too sometimes

but lately i've been wondering if i know how to be anything but funny. i notice that i tend to not say anything unless i have something funny to say, i don't know if i can even have a serious conversation for an extended period of time. i certainly don't have them often

i feel like i'm one of those side characters on a shitty sitcom that only exists to add one-liners to other people's conversations. and yeah, you like him, sure, but you wouldn't watch a whole episode about him, there's not much depth to his character. when he's not on camera, when he's off on his own, you don't know what he's up to and you don't care, he's probably just posting on a message board somewhere, waiting for someone to invite him to something.

i'm not sure what the point of this thread is, it's very me-centric, where i whine and maybe you listen. i don't know what conversation could happen here, it's just something that's been bugging me lately and i needed to put it in words that other people would see

that's what this place is for, right?

so you're saying you're kramer?

I was thinking more along the lines of Chandler.

but chandler and mostly everyone on that show had this certain cracker honkey quality that made you want to punch them in the face. i don't want to punch bob in the face.

I used to feel like this (not that I'm blaspheming within this community and claiming to be as funny as bob) - like I only really brought one aspect of my personality to the table.

It sounds glib, but the solution is to flex a bit, reign in the haha and just try to actually be yourself. Because chances are it's a defense mechanism. If it's not, you can still be dynamic. You do more than post jokes on here (sometimes), for example.

I only think this way because of the comedians I've met who I have never heard say anything remotely funny. I figure they save it all for their material.

Do you feel like sometimes you're not taken as seriously because you're too funny and you're always on?

Bob

so you're saying you're kramer?

mm, kind of, except kramer episodes were good

closer to chandler, except his episodes were ok too, at least if you liked friends at all (please don't discuss whether or not friends was a good show in this thread, i don't want to get into that derail)

kid P's probably right, but i really do like it when people laugh at the things i say. it's invigorating, like a heartbeat. i feel awkward when i talk for a while and nobody laughs

basically my plan is to dive head first into stand-up and improv and bury my head in a sea of booze and comedy pussy until i'm too old for it, and hopefully by then the cirrhosis will claim me

It's a defense mechanism, or a safety net maybe describes it better. You used to be alone a lot, right? but you sought some social interaction and eventually made friends. but when choosing to speak up and make friends, you carefully choose words that gain a positive reaction. Funny people are usually more conscious of their surroundings and can comment in a humorous manner on the state of those surroundings. And people respond well to that, and it helps relieve your anxiety.

I'm sure people genuinely like you and would get to know other sides of your personality. The best way to do that is by being the person who asks questions. Not like dumb ones, but think of things you'd like to know about a friend. I have to force myself to do that, but it's starting to come easier. Also, if someone asks you "what's new?", have an answer. It can be a straight answer or a joke in that case...just as long as your perpetual answer isn't "nothing", you'll at least symbolically open the conversation to more intimacy. Even if it ends up going nowhere.

Anyway, I think if you keep trying you'll grow out of the Chandler phase. You just need to put in the effort. Or you can go on being a grump who jokes about drinking all the time...but that kind of comedy is dunzo for me, if I hear one more comedian talk about what a drunk loser he or she is, ima puke. (no offense, just been to a fuckload of comedy shows in the past year).

It just seems like you're smart enough to be more innovative than that. But just go at your own pace, man.

what about sexual frustration jokes, are those still good?

Sure, as long as they're not too misogynistic.

what you're embarking on is a holy quest.

godspeed good sir, godspeed...

oh and if I don't see "basically my plan is to dive head first into stand-up and improv and bury my head in a sea of booze and comedy pussy until i'm too old for it, and hopefully by then the cirrhosis will claim me" on the jacket cover to your biography, i'll be disappoint.

I make myself laugh several times a day,

and my theory is, if nobody else thinks its funny, fuck 'em, cause i'm laughin.

I used to love Kramer till he got heckled and went all racist like a crazy prick. THAT was some SHIT.

You heard KidP bob, REIGN IN THE HAHA

If I was releasing a new album that's what it would be called. A good title.

omg. so happy. you're gonna be so happy too. this is awesome.

don't worry about being funny all the time. You're a real person as evidenced by many of your posts here. If you weren't a relatable human, you wouldn't be funny.

I've been doing standup for the past 7 years. My stuff is on Satellite Radio and I've worked with a lot of pretty big names (Rich Vos, Nick DiPaolo, Amy Schumer etc). I do comedy on my own terms cuz I have a day job and a family to support. If your serious, my suggestion would be to move to NYC. Otherwise, your career will be limited. Good Luck!

well, i don't know if i want to commit to it as a career or anything, with the goal of not having to have any other kind of job eventually. right now i just want to keep it up as a hobby. keep up the improv, try out stand up and see how i do at that.

boston has a comedy scene too. admittedly it's no NY or LA, from what i've gathered it seems like people who do comedy in boston tend to stay in boston and don't get noticed much outside of boston. occasionally some squeak through and make it big but i dunno, isn't that true everywhere? aren't your odds always kind of shitty?

anyway i'm finally starting to enjoy myself out here a little bit...i'll keep the NY thing in mind if by chance i end up deciding that i'm an amazing comedian and need to have more but for now i think i'll stay put.

That's cool....I feel there are different tiers of standup:
-tv/movie comics: Seinfeld, Rock, Leno
-theater comics: CK, Cable Guy
-NYC/Comedy Central comics: Norton, Florentine
-road comic headliners: guys who play your local clubs

it's a tough ladder to climb...but doing it on your own terms is the best route to take.
