While looking for gear from various companies like Rusty, Billabong and Rip Curl, I encounter many many retailers located in the U.K. that sell that stuff, including actual surfing gear like surf boards.
I thought the water there was too cold for surfing? But I guess if you wear the right gear that is not a problem?

Yep, there's plenty of surfing all around the UK, and plenty who surf all year round. During the winter people often wear gloves, boots and hoods but many wouldn't be seen dead in a hood, better known (over here at least) as a twat cap.
It's pretty much wetsuits all year round though.

Yep, there's plenty of surfing all around the UK, and plenty who surf all year round.Cool. While I have not had the chance to learn to surf, it's on my "list", and I'm inspired to do so because I spent several years in Florida as a kid and our family spent a LOT of time at the beach (on the Atlantic side, where there is lots of wave action vs. the Gulf side's rather bland surf).
It's pretty much wetsuits all year round though. That's what I thought. Plus, and correct me if I'm wrong, the weather there can often be overcast? I'm not complaining since one of my favorite places to visit here is western Washington State, which except during their short summer, is overcast a lot.

West coast of Ireland is good for surfing, it's cold though. South West coast UK is good too.

Well I'm an occasional surfer I'm afraid - the worst kind. It's always been on my list and probably always will be, but I get by and have fun ;)

You won't find me correcting you there :D 'Often overcast' is being very generous/optimistic.
If you're a real man, you'll go surf in Aberdeen.

If you're a real man, you'll go surf in Aberdeen.Does this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7FY_qtnELmg&feature=related) look like typical surf conditions there?
This (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MH0y3ylgGtI) was filmed in a place called Nig Bay. Besides the music which I kinda liked (sounded a bit like BT's dreamy This Binary Universe album (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f7JiCZvJh5Q)*) what got my attention was when one of the commenters wrote "....can get a bit smelly with the treatment works near by." :( I hope he's not talking about a sewage treatment plant!
* I own the 5.1 surround version, which has a great surround mix
