At the same time they are cutting education, laying off teachers, etc out there in California, and telling its citizens they need to pay more in taxes, at the same time California is basically going to hell, thanks to union contracts and rules we see a nurse in a state prison be able to rake in nearly $300,000 in 2010

http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2011-10-26/nurse-making-269-810-demonstrates-california-s-overtime-binge.html

All you guys and gals out there in California, bitching and moaning about the cost of tuition, etc out there, teachers being laid off, taxes, closing down state parks. this woman and others like her would like to thank you for allowing her to milk the system thanks to public sector union contracts and pension agreements while you suffer in the conomic mess you have created for yourself from electing these same politicians over and over who work hand in hand with public sector unions to bleed the taxpayers dry.

Most Californians are well aware of the prison guard union and the prison system getting special treatment and major money while we bitch and moan about tuition and bad education, unlike other states.

When you are a society that only wants to jail and not rehabilitate, thats what could happen.

More than half of the overtime was accrued by just two state agencies: prisons and mental health, both of which must operate around the clock with required staffing levels.
Keller, the nurse at a prison near San Luis Obispo who tripled her pay with overtime, worked 2,450 extra hours in 2010, or 102 full days. Some of that was required overtime, though she volunteered as well, said Nancy Kincaid, spokeswoman for the federal court-appointed receiver that runs California’s prison health-care system.

Please note "required" staffing levels as well as "required overtime" and "volunteered as well."

California has many issues and troubles all tied up with the inability to change rules due to Union agreements, props, and worse, term limits.

Looks like somebody approved the OT. The other side of that contractual bargaining agreement is management. Management approved the OT. Probably because hiring another FTE (full time employee) means more expense to the state.

So to compound the problem attack the workers. Yet the reality is different than the perception painted by the story. These state jobs were "Shit Jobs" during the decade leading up to the Wall Street Crash of 2008, but now those who looked down upon the lowly state employees realize they have jobs with benefits.

In reality, the average California State Employee makes $57,539.

The nurse cited in your link provided a job that requires skills, licensing and responsibilities between good health, sickness or death.

If you want the Big $$$ Working for the State of California coach a football team or be a professor, then you can make a few cool million and fly all over the country.... With cheerleaders and shit.

Nice try, but while management approves union contracts in the private sector (which is why GM and Chrysler deserved to go down for agreeing to such contracts in the first place instead of being bailed out by joe taxpayer), in govt union contracts are approved by politicians and political appointees.

as you can see, it was the dems who approved the latest prison worker contracts which have allowed the workers to rape the system

nice try defending the gourging ....

You have almost as much comprehension as a gnat, bash the unions and blame the democrats. The bigger picture completely escapes your grasp.

Let's face it, you hate unions and democrats. Just call your threads I hate unions and democrats.

BTW, things are going just great with the current republican majority rule in congress and unions on their lasy gasp here in the good 'ol USA.

the Republicans control the House of Rep. The Dems control the Senate and the White House. The Dems had complete control of all for Obama's first 2 years. Also recall at the time the economy started to tank, Bush's last 2 years, the Dems controlled the House and Senate.

So you are saying......Bush the Pres, his fault for economy now even though Dems controlled house and sentate, but economy still sucks and its the Repubs fault even though Dems control the White House and Sentate? Thats some fucked up logic.

Face it, if Obama had done something productive in his first 2 years instead of passing pending failure Obamacare, going around the world apoligizing on behalf of the US for our "misdeeds", and passing the failed stimulus (still waiting for Biden's "summer of recovery"), things might have been different.

Bush left a nice piece of shit for Obama. Unfortunately, Obama turned that solid stool into diarrhea.

But, back to unions, there was a time and a place for them. Back when there were no labor laws and no foreign competition. Yes, there was a time. But today they are economic parasites. THey suck the blood out of companies and them jump to the next. In my industry, the LTL motorfreight industry, There's only 3 unionized national carriers left of what once were 100s. They killed the US domestic steel industry, the auto industry, and so many other industries.

Go spend a week in Detroit if you want to the see the results of a heavily unionized, heavily Democrat controlled municipality.

OK, but how do you feel about unions and democrats?

Whatever dude, you have decision making skills or post making skills unless it eventually ends up being about "democrats bad" or "unions bad". Then you deride Obama.

Logic and the California State Employees wages (complete with their $300 million dollar give back) don't play into any gratitude for these real people with real kids. Part of the community and part of the tax base.

It's all unions and democrats.

Why don't you go off on the $2 million dollar coach wages?

Something much less ominous and much more efficient destroyed the unions, US jobs and the trucking industry.

I've been much more involved with transportation than you could ever imagine. I do understand ltl.

I'm pointing out how the world has changed due to a revolution in moving cargo, which you're part of.

It became cheaper to buy garments from Asia in NYC 40 years ago by major dept stores. Rather than have them delivered from the garment district less than a mile away.

The Box was, is and will be the game changer. For the World's economy. For the Global Economy. For all businesses in the USA. For all pay scales.
