I want to get my boyfriend a drum set for his birthday but have absolutely no idea what I'm doing / how to shop for one. I'd prefer to get him a nice used set and have a budget of about $500. He's done a little drumming, but very little. He's definitely a beginner, likely won't ever be in a band and therefore probably won't be performing with these drums, so I want to get him something that sounds good, but it doesn't have to be anything fancy.

What brands are best? He's pretty tall...Does size matter (lol)? Would you advise against buying something online without testing it out first, even though I'm not the one who will be playing it? Any good resources you'd recommend? Help? :o

I found a sweet second hand Ludwig kit recently. I haven't drummed for a while.

i was thinking about getting one of those dorky synthesized drum sets just because they take up so much less space. but i have no idea what the fuck im doing or what to look for.

How tall he is doesn't matter, all thrones (drum stools) are adjustable. Any decent brand will be fine, Ludwig, Pearl, Yamaha, Tama. Good luck finding a complete set not tore to hell for $500. It can be done, it's just not easy to find them. I never buy used music equipment online because you never really know the condition.

You can start buying a new cheap small drum kit and then your freind can customize it his way by changing the skins and elements.

Nobody uses those extra toms. A 3 piece set is where it's at!

i got this set for my girl 2 years ago and I love playing it also and its easy to travel with.

it does come with real symbols and skins also, but these shown are quiet in case your practicing in a noise sensitive area.
