So I have a problem with my 3 year old that I am kinda of embarrassed
of. My 3 year old is a thumb sucker. We fought it when she was very
young for a while, but then realized she was going to sleep and back
to sleep on her own by sucking her thumb. Also, she only sucks it when
she has her blanket.

She has this blanket and she has to have it while napping, while
watching TV, while hanging out around the house. We never take it
out of the house. I told her I was going to take the blanket away if
I see her sucking her thumb, and she freaks out. "That's my
Blanket!!!!" Taking her blanket away is a battle that leads to a
total melt down of my 3 year old and me sending her to her room
crying. I am to soft for this and I cant stand it.

So, I am going to do it. I am taking her blanket away and I will let
her have it at naps and bedtime only.

How about something like... "beating your child is not a good idea. I am a professional, what you should do is...."

Why don't you just go get some of that stuff you put on their thumbs to stop them from thumbsucking? It is helpfully called "thum". I picked some up in the US whilst we were there, but personally we have not yet bothered to try to force M to stop thumbsucking. She is doing it less and less now, I'm happy to just wait and let her grow out of it as her dentist says her mouth shape and teeth are all coming along fine so there's no damage being done, and she's 5.

So i do have an update/ some progress to report..

I have been telling her that I am taking the blanket away if she doesn't stop and that seems to scare her but I have never taken it away yet... But I am thinking about it..

anyway, her thumb cracked open on her joint as a result of her sucking it and we had to put a band-aid on it. This has been a great experience as she is freaked out about his crack in her skin and has stopped talking about tit and telling me how she is going to stop sucking her thumb. She took her nap and went to bed with no thumb sicking for the first time. Not sure if the problem is solved, but it is a positive step.

Very strange that I made this post and this all happened within a day or two, maybe divine intervention.

On a reasonable note, little girls like the whole "painted nails" its cute type thing yes? They make nail polish for people who chew their nails that tastes horrible when you bite your nail to stop you from doing it, maybe try that? She will see it as her getting her nails painted pretty when you are preventing the thumb sucking.

this is the samr stuff I was talking about, Thum.

By coincidence, we decided to try it this past weekend with my daughter, She was getting some irritation below her lip. Me and her and mr.p all had a chat about being a big girl, and thumbsucking is really a baby thing, and she's not a baby any more, and she wants Santa to bring a two wheeler bike for Christmas and only big girls ride two wheeler bikes. She was a bit upset really - she understands the 'big girl' part but she said "When I'm scared or uncomfortable or I miss you I suck on my thumb and it helps me feel better and safe. If I can't suck my thumb, how am I going to stop being scared and feel safe?" And that's a really hard question to answer to someone who doesn't have much capacity abstract reasoning as yet.

But. It's all gone rather well actually. The first day was a bit hard because she would put her thumb in her mouth, taste the yucky stuff and then cry a little bit. Not a bit scene, but just get a bit weepy and sob "I wish I could suck my thumb again." then she'd get distracted by something else and it would be ok for a while. Now each day it has gotten a bit easier.

So Pee-Paw lost a finger when he was a teenager in a water skiing accident.. when Lea's thumb cracked open I told her that if she keeps sucking her thumb it might get worse and fall off like Pee-Paw. Now she sucks her thumb and tells me, I hope it doesn't fall off like Pee-Paw.
