My husband and I have been married for 12 years. Out of those 12 years, we've spent 5 anniversaries apart. Like, on different continents apart. It's not something we're thrilled about, but it's not something that is a problem. Circumstances just are what they are. The first two times we were apart on the date (2002, 2006) it was because my mom had cancer and I went back to the US to help out my family whilst he stayed in England. The other 3 times, again, I've been in the US helping out my family (my mom has since passed away, but I have a disabled sister and an autistic nephew, so I go help out with them to give my dad a break) whilst mr.peachy is here in China working. Ultimately, although it would be loevlier to be able to be together on the day, it isn't really that important; we just have to be mindful to make time for each other when it is practical to do so. So I get that it's a bit disappointing that you can't celebrate on the actual day, but just like the wedding isn't the marriage, neither is the anniversary - try not to spend the energy feeling bad, and instead maybe try to think of a way that you can show him how much you appreciate him in your life. Doesn't have to be big, can be something really simple like, I dunno, cooking a food he particularly likes that is not something you'd ordinarily make and telling him "I just wanted to remind you that I think you're awesome."
