View Full Version : Disneyland is on the table

the girls want to go, my wife wants to go.

3 girls want to go, so I assume I will be going in May, but Disneyland. Seems a bit excessive, wast-full and a bunch of bullshit.

Would you take your young girls?

Its not like its easy, it will take lots of sacrifices and savings, shit I will be into the trip for at least $3500, probably more like $5000 by the time I get home.

Truth is I want to take them, but just seems so unnecessary/wast-full.

Oh yea, on a side note, the new Barbie Doll is allot more like a possible action figure than a doll. Ava just got one in the mail for Christmas.

I lived in Florida until I was 8. My mom took me to Disneyworld 3 or 4 times until we moved.

Yes, the place is a evil corporate hell.

But, chances are those 3 girls will love the trip and never forget it.

you should do it for the Dad of The Year award, but I understand when it's a whole vacation and there is so much planning and $$ involved.

I go with my wife once a year, but it's just a shot down the freeway. it also depends if you like long lines and slow rides vs extreme roller coasters like at Six Flags.

Disney is so much more family friendly, and from my experience, it's still the better bargain. they at least let you bring in food from outside the park.

question though- isn't Disneyworld in Florida more of the vacation destination vs. Disneyland in Anaheim? You've got three or four or more different parks (Epcot, Magic Kingdom, Hollywood Studios, Animal Kingdom, Typhoon Lagoon) vs. choosing between The Magic Kingdom and California Adventure, which is open during renovation to add a new "Cars" section to the park.

plus you stay on site at the resort in Orlando and your kids will love you for it.

its a fucking waste of money if you ask me. they will get over it. gonna stress you out for a while having to pinch pennies and not able to do other stuff or go out to eat or whatever just to go there for a week and blow 5gs.

im sure theres some other nice place you could take them for way cheaper.

its a bunch of corporate bullshit they flood your kids mind with until they are like "ooo daddy i need to go to disney land". they are just playing with your kids emotions to get parents to take their kids to this place where they overcharge for everything and plow your bank account in the ass.

there are just so many better ways to use your money in my opinion than waste it there. put it in a college fund or buy them some stocks. they will thank you when they grow up thats for sure.

Oh pffft. There is no reason not to do both. OK maybe not in the same trip, but there is not reason why you can't do the big Disney extravaganza one year and then camping in Yellowstone or wherever another. Life is full of a variety of experiences. Yeah sure, DW is a totally artificial, over the top, profit-driven extravaganza. Well so is Vegas for fuck's sake, but it's a hell of a lot of fun too.

I have extremely high regard for the authenticity of art, history and dedication Anaheim's Disneyland presents everyday. sure there is a lot of cheese and hustle in the park but going on attractions such as the Haunted Mansion, Pirates of the Carribean or that Tiki Hut are truly amazing. They have been mostly untouched since the 60's and are like works of art... very detailed and incredibly fresh each visit.

The trains, architecture, landscaping and sightlines are an engineering feat unequaled on 160 acres elsewhere on the planet earth. It truly is amazing.

All of the above said, make sure, absolutely sure to go mid-week, off-season in the fall, winter or spring. If there is more than 30,000 people in the park it immediately changes into hell.

When you have your own kids I doubt you'll be so snooty--you'll probably be a bit more realistic. Like Peachy says, it's not like you can't do both.

We've never taken our kid (he's 11) to any disneyland parks, but he's just not really into it. He's way into lego so legoland is our indulgence.

Think Disneyland may happen one day, if only because I want to check it out!

On a bit of a side note, I just watched an episode of Family Guy where Stewie and Brian went to all these alternate universes. The Disneyverse was hilarious. :D

I also remember a childhood trip that included the beaches of the Florabama coast on the way to DW for a week.

I still think the two experiences are different (Disneyland vs DisneyWorld), it all depends on how you plan your trip.

you can do DL in a day and spend less than $200 per person and even go build a sand castle the next morning at Newport Beach.

I still think the $5000 estimate for a week at DW is high, but on yeahwho's advice going mid week or mid season can make it more enjoyable and inexpensive.

yeahwho- I have to endorse your thoughts on the engineering marvel that takes place at a Disney Park. every single piece of landscaping, every single design is meticulously laid out and quite a spectacle.

I always wanted to take an underground tour to see how the seamless the park works on any given day.

heres a link for the OP, who seems like a great dad for thinking of his wife and daughters' desires

When you see a little girl wearing a princess outfit at Disneyland, their imagination is on full tilt. There is a real life giant castle. There is Cinderella. Story books/DVD's come to life. That is an extremely positive experience that shouldn't be dismissed or brushed under the corporate greed rug. Same with all the kids who go bat shit when they see Mickey, Buzz, or any other characters they connect with. As wonderful as national parks are or the beach, you don't see kids going nuts when they see a sequoia compared to a real 3D version of Pluto they can hug and touch. Both are equally important.

I work for the mouse and no, its not the best job ever. But it certainly is rewarding walking the park and seeing all of the smiling faces on kids.

And as a parent, don't you want to spend the day with your kids wearing themselves out so they crash early and the adults can get their own time? You know what I mean? *wink wink* *nudge nudge*

I see what you did there.... but you forgot to add Hershey Park :D

endorsing what Echewta said, taking a youth group or field trip to a Disney Park can be rewarding in itself as well. you see the look of a kid who has never had this type of experience.

I had a philosophical conversation with a kid once who broke it down for me. he said in a really deep way- "Walt Disney came to this country with nothing but a few dollars in his pocket and a vision..." then he pointed to me the "beautiful" fake deer alongside the train ride to Main Street USA.

I didn't have the heart to tell him it was Disney's parents who immigrated here, the kid was completely enamored with the grandness of it all.

he didn't spend a dime that day.

And they should give you a bucket of softballs before you enter "It's a Small Small World".

Disneyland also is one of the best places to go when you're trippin' your balls off. I went there on LSD a few times as a teen and multiple times enhanced on the herb, it's fucking fantastic fun.

Two great reads on Disney from two distinct opposing viewpoints,

Mouse Tales, Behind the Mouse Ears http://www.amazon.com/Mouse-Tales-Behind-Ears-Disneyland/dp/0964060566

Team Rodent http://www.carlhiaasen.com/books/books-team.html

I decided to go as many times to Disneyland as I can, because the place is always a gas and it reminds me of some of the funniest moments in my childhood/teens that only could of happened in a park like Disney. Just avoid the crowds, be prepared and learn a few simple tricks to keep the day broken up.... I rent a car and leave at least once a day, just go back to the hotel or up to LA. I'm jealous, I went last in feb of 2009 with my brother and then 10 year old nephew for 5 days, it was a blast and almost 80 degrees everyday.

Isn't it common knowledge that Echewta possess a doctorate degree in molecular nanotechnology? Nano medicine and "mind uploading" being his major, he has been employed by the Disney corporation the last several decades to work on the mostly "hush hush" operation labeled Walt Disney on Ice.

In the 60's Walt Disney faked his death and had his brain cryogenically frozen.
Many grants and scholarships have been rewarded to gifted students throughout the decades and Echewta was a natural to gain one of the Walt Disney on Ice Foundations grants, after all he was raised and home schooled in a cave in Antarctica.

I guess he wears one of them thick ass nuke suits and turns liquid natural gas valves all day to make sure Walt's brain stays at below −150 °C, −238 °F or 123 K.

Plus I think he has to be very polite, neat and keen.

I have to say, one thing that did occur to me many times when we were at Disneyworld last year, after spending the summer in the US and hearing relentlessly about the sluggish economy and unemployment, as I walked around the parks and the hotels and so forth, was "Look at all these people with jobs." And then of course all the people one doesn't see, also employed. So if me making my kid happy by taking her to some crazy fantasy world of cartoon characters helps keep people working, you know, I'm down with that.

Flamingo Land (http://www.flamingoland.co.uk/) was as good as it got for me as a kid. I remember growing up that I was kinda in the knowledge that DisneyLand was for the super privileged, only the rich went there and it was all kinda fake - but things are a lot more accessible and cheaper now, we weren't rich growing up so I guess my parents planted that seed early.

Anyway, an off-season groupon type trip I think would be your best bet like has been said. You don't have to stay forever and a backpack full of food and drinks will save you at least $100 a day I imagine.

I'm a cynical fudger tho but I did go to typhoon lagoon a couple of years ago and I enjoyed it for the afternoon as an adult (y)

when my 5 yr old first saw that advert with all the parents revealing they going to disneyland she asked a lot of questions and it was highly annoying. but i do take the point that the enjoyment is the key.

I have told my daughter that:

a) its a lot of pennies to go (she then offered her entire collection of piggy banks to donate towards a ticket)
b) we have to wait for her little brother to be a bit bigger
c) that in order to go to disneyland that you have to go to Alton Towers (http://www.altontowers.com/)first in order to get the chance to go to bigger parks!.

That seemed to work.

TBH i would love to go (havent even been to america!) but i do think the kids have to be at least 8 otherwise i dont think they would appreciate it to the fullest.

Here are my last vacations, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, NYC, San Francisco, Disneyland and then every year the Oregon Coast for 4 or 5 days.

They look at me like I'm fucking nuts for always booking rooms in major cities. I have passed on Hawaii multiple times the past decade, even now my sister has a boyfriend who lives there. A co-worker has a time share on one of those islands.... I don't even know there names... I think warm Staten island or something.

It is two parks- the original Magic Kingdom and California Adventure.

DISNEYWORLD IS IN ORLANDO AND IS A WHOLE MEGARESORT full of at least five different theme parks.

HAWAII is the 50th State in the Union and is rad.(went in 87 and 07 and explored the black sand beaches and volcanoes of the Big Island as well as the more touristy stuff around Oahu- Honolulu, Waikiki, North Shore, Waimea Falls Park and Pearl Harbor. Its really expensive)

When I went to Disneyland I 2009 I had the luxury to be there 4 out of my 7 day visit. Plus it was in the winter so no crowds, small to no lines.

One day we had the early entry thing where you go in an hour and a half before the regular hours. Rather than just walk on any ride I opted to sit on a bench in the center of the park and drink coffee and watch people, it was awesome. I pretty much sat there for two hours eating pastries, fulfilling my caffeine addiction, watching the park fill up and seeing how psyched up the visitors were.

The park is really gorgeous, one of my obsessions in life. The landscaping alone is amazing. It takes a lot of time to truly enjoy the detail.

So went to the beach last year. 2013 is booked and paid. See you at club 33.

Nobody ever comes out of Club 33 alive.

I just got a d-land season pass. What's the details on club 33?

If I lived in the LA area I would definitely purchase the pass. I really like Disneyland in the off season, like right now when the lines are at minimum and it's easy to navigate Anaheim, which has some pretty awesome restaurants, much better than Club 33. And the extra added bonus of getting out of the park for awhile.

Here is some Club 33 info I found online. From a 2010 article (http://www.dailyfinance.com/blog/2010/02/03/inside-disneys-exclusive-club-33-where-the-recession-doesnt-s/?icid=main|htmlws-main-n|dl3|link3|http%3A%2F%2Fwww.walletpop.com%2Fblog% 2F2010%2F02%2F03%2Finside-disneys-exclusive-club-33-where-the-recession-doesnt-s%2F). Members pay an initiation fee of $27,500 (if they are a corporation) or $10,450 (for individuals). On top of that, they pay annual fees of about $6,100 or $3,275, respectively.

I really like going down to Disneyland whenever I visit Southern California. I've always just figured Club 33 is one of those places to hide for the rich and famous. I've heard mixed reviews on the food which really at these prices (http://www.disneylandclub33.com/July%202012%20Dinnerr%20Menu.htm)is unacceptable.

Really just sitting in the Hub of the park early in the morning drinking coffee is way more awesome, or wrapping the mind around the Haunted Mansion (http://gallery.toursdepartingdaily.com/Disneyland-Resort/Photos/i-NsBn4LD/0/X3/An%20Evening%20at%20the%20Haunted%20Mansion-X3.jpg)rides details.

I am glad we all got to learn about club 33.

I did book the trip with money my wife got from her grandmother who passed. It took all the money and a little more. While booking the trip, I asked if there was beer in the main park and the answer I got was "sure at Club 33"

Anyway, just so you know this is out of my league for sure. Looks like beer at kids bed time at Goofy's Hideout or maybe for dinner at Arial's Grotto is what I get.

However, I am planning on not waiting in much of any lines.

I just assume go to the beach again, but the kids and wife win this year. I am glad we skipped last year as my now 4 year old, I believe, will get more memories this year.

There's several restaurants in Downtown Disney that serve beer and all alcohol - including a House of Blues.

As wonderful as national parks are or the beach, you don't see kids going nuts when they see a sequoia compared to a real 3D version of Pluto they can hug and touch. Both are equally important.

I can see my 6 year old now..... standing under a sequoia looking like a bewildered ant. He is no tree hugger so we will be taking him to Disneyland before he is 10. When he is older then I will plan a Grand Canyon/Sequoia excursion that will have him wishing he was in college.

Disneyland and going to national parks are much cheaper than sending your kid to college.

Disneyland on my lunch hour yesterday was just awesome - caught front row on Pirates and quick jaunt on Indiana Jones and then was back at work!

So cool, I know they jacked the prices a bit for the annual passes this past year but yeah if yours includes parking and you're able to hit a few rides then get out in under 2 hours, what a bargain.

I hear you guys have a Seattle like chill right now so the park must be pretty slow.

The Pirates of the Caribbean ride is a combination of National Treasure and High Art all wrapped up in about a 15 minute viewing. It goes beyond interactive, immersing the viewer into another time, place and world. Love that ride.

Mid-range pass... no parking included. Downtown Disney buys you 3 hours free. We got rather wet on Pirates - too wet for this chilly weather, but it is what it is.

See anyone on Friday the 18th???
