As a holiday treat, I broke down and bought myself a Kindle Touch. I read a lot and figured something for $99 that allows me to carry like 500 books at once would fit my style. Plus, I have an Amazon account and was going for something cheap, so I didn't look too much into the reviews surrounding readers available.
The thing is, I really haven't used it. It's sat in my apartment for two weeks. I'm trying to delve into it over the holidays, but still can't get the hang of it.
It's much smaller than I thought it would be, so I'm constantly touching the screen to flip pages. I wanted to get a newspaper subscription on it, but can't use the gift card I got to purchase a subscriptions. I am a fairly traditional book-enjoying person who likes the touch, feel, smell of a real book, but I thought this was going to pull me over to loving digital books, and that just hasn't happened. The only real use I see is for traveling to decrease weight and add functionality of an "experimental web browser" that does a decent job on wi-fi.
If you've got a kindle or similar, am I missing something? What do you use it for?

I had the touch screen nook and hated it. I like the old school kindle and use that several times a week and lots when I travel. I like that the screen doesnt glow and you hit buttons to change the page Not sure what I would buy if it breaks. I have no interest in reading off a backlit screen
Mostly I read library books though.

I tried a newspaper and magazine on e devices and didn't like it. I think I skim too much to make it worthwhile. Honestly the only big upside of these things for me is to read a book that wouldn't be a paperback on planes and in restaurants. But I travel a lot and get stuck waiting someplace a lot and it is nice to have a dozen reference and history books in my purse. I have never recommended that anyone else buy one though. People read in personal ways. Many friends are buying them for old relatives now. There is less risk now that they are so cheap but I wonder what they think. Do they have wifi? Could they figure out how to download something from a source other than the place that sold it to them? My mom would have hated it. She would have thought $15 to download a book you could get at a library was a waste.

I bought an iPad a few months back. I love reading books on it. I think I use it more for movies though. It really is awesome on a plane or when I'm doing cardio at the gym. free wifi and streaming Netflix is awesome.
also, I rarely go on my computer unless it is to type an actual email.

Must have been the Nook color..
I have the black & white Nook Touch. No backlight, no color, has touch screen & buttons for turning pages. I love it so far. Have had it for a few months.

I haven't read a book in over a year, whoops. I read news and factual information on the internet. I like books, but they make me fall asleep, not sure if it's my eyesight or my synesthesia. I would probably like a kindle though.
I prefer James Earl Jones reading them to me.

Agreed. The only time I can really see myself using my Kindle is traveling and waiting at random places. I think I'm going to get a magazine subscription on mine so I do have something to flip through when I have that waiting time. I downloaded a free trial of a magazine, enjoyed the format, and would never otherwise get a paper subscription, so I'm going to get the magazine.
Besides traveling and waiting, I don't really see myself using my Kindle, which is disappointing. I was excited to get a Kindle and thought it would really move me into new reading technology, but it hasn't. I read all the articles and reviews that said it is really an "e-reader for book readers," but it just hasn't lived up to my expectations. I'd just rather go to the library and check out a book; there really is value in the search for a good book, the feel and smell of a coveted book, and the social atmosphere of a public library.
Also, there's something that gets me about Amazon having my payment information. It's like a slippery slope with buying things from the Amazon store - that as soon as I buy one book, I'll buy ten more. I'd just as soon buy nothing. I know that's how iTunes and other programs work, but it's the first time I have a device that allows me to buy something with one click. It's scary.
"i usually dont pay for any downloads or apps so i am catching up on the good ones i missed growing up and re-reading my favorites- currently Huck Finn"
Free downloads of old books is really the main reason I got a Kindle, but I have had no motivation to undertake "A Tale of Two Cities" on my Kindle. That makes me want to sleep.

Sure - I enjoy reading on my Kindle, the e-ink looks like paper. But when do you actually use the device? That's what I can't figure out with my Kindle.
