I have a muzzle loading pistol my dad made from a kit hanging on the wall - never actually fired it though

Helvete, do you have access to firearms?
I have a nice shotgun but, I keep it at the rod and gun club, I don't have the required license to keep it at my place (in Germany :-p).
I am thinking about my next purchase though when I get back to the States.

I think he was impying that he does in fact (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9lzri8dn7p0&t=0m14s) have access to firearms.

I do not have any that I purchased, but I have to many, not to mention over a thousand rounds of ammo. My Grand Father and Great Gandfather were both detectives and they gave me their collections.
I would be happy to trade some of them for a nice custom gibson solid body.

Yeah, I hear the German laws are pretty strict, even more so than the UK I think? I'm deploying with my L85A2 and Browning pistol in a couple of months. Not actually 'mine' but you know how it goes in the military.
The only way we're all protected if we all bear arms.
I shoot lasers out of my eyes.
Yes. Yes I do.
You don't need the 30sf unless your going to carry or you have little hands.

No but I would like to have one for protection. Too many women end up missing and I would like to shoot somebody dead before that happens to me.

Nope. Owning a gun usually means that you're more likely to get capped, not less, and also more likely that you'll shoot a family member (or your kid will shoot a familiy member or himself/herself.) In my experience everybody thinks that they're more responsible than the next person when it comes to gun safety, etc., but America is full of over-confident morons. Inevitably they get careless and that's when tradgedy strikes.
But, I do like to go shooting. It's fun.
Also, if my environment was different, like if I was in a gang, I probably would have a gun.

I'm seriously choosing between the Glock 30sf and Glock 30.
The glock 30 shoots like a dream, I've never shot the sf but from what I read the main difference is the shorter distance to the trigger. Like I said I wouldn't consider it unless you plan on concealed carry, or you have smaller hands.

Concealed carry isn't a major concern for me but, I might get the license (when I get back to the States of course) because I would like that option. Thanks for the feedback (y)

Can't do it. I have 4 kids at home, can't imagine an accident happening. I know there are safes that are near impossible to get into but why take the chance. Being raised by hippies sort of influences me also.

I like a revolver myself. No bullet in the chamber, but just pull the trigger and its on. To me the safest way to carry.
With the g lock or any semi auto, you either have to keep a bullet in the chamber, I say bad idea. Or you have to load the chamber and then pull the trigger. Should be easy to do, but when under attack, putting a bullet in the chamber of the semi automatic has several potential chances to fail and misfire.
get a 38 revolver for protection/carry or a 357 and you have the option to load it with the 357 or the 38.
I don't carry and my guns are all locked up in a safe and I should say I know nothing about self defense or weapons.

Thanks for the feedback. I shoot just for fun, I don't expect to ever have to use a personal weapon in a defensive situation. I like the option to though.
About 6 months ago I took up skeet shooting. Have you ever done that?

the trick to being good at skeet is to aim with your thumb. Point your thumb along the barrel and learn to aim with it. I have two national champions in my family.
My mother in law lives on an 18 square mile hunting ranch with the a top of the line skeet shooting area, even rolls skeet on the ground, throughs out random skeet, all automatic. One of the past Minnesota Vikings head coach was there over christmas, but that is standard operating procedure.
I went fishing, and took out the camera and got some photos of wild hogs. Came up on a mom feeding its babies.
10 years ago I would laugh in your face and resume my game of hacky sack, but the older I get the more I lean towards owning one for home protection. I don't feel the need to get a permit to carry so I can act like Charles Bronson. I really don't have that much experience with firearms, so I don't think a handgun would be good for a high pressure situation. I think a smaller gauge shotgun (with a bitchin' pistol grip) would be better if the situation ever arises where some dickhead's walking around inside my house in the dark at 3am looking for something to rape. I used to think that people were too paranoid, but again, the older I get I realize that crazy shit happens and I don't want to be unprepared in the event that said shit does go down.

I own 3, a Beretta 92fs, Remington 870 and a 30's Springfield .22 rifle. All basic but very reliable weapons. That is all I've ever wanted, a pistol, shotgun and a rifle. About the only other weapon I would be interested in is a Winchester 30 30, if I came across a good deal for one.

It seems so ridiculous to me that pretty much anyone can just walk into a store and buy a gun, a device specifically designed and made (at not insignificant cost and effort) to kill other people. It's a ridiculous way to run a society, and your entire nation is built on it... no wonder you're all so fucked up.
Just to make it clear I am not a pacifist and have fired many weapons in the past, handguns, rifles and shot. I've actually been told by experienced shootists that I am one of the best they've seen and once beat a Vietnam vet American man at skeet-shooting using his own shotgun. I enjoy shooting and have the same perverse interest in war and shit as every other male. Which is precisely why I should not be allowed to buy and own a gun.

That's not exactly accurate. Especially in my state where the gun laws are the most stringent in the Nation. There is no logical reason that a responsible and law abiding citizen should be prevented from owning a firearm. I understand your argument though.
I knew it was only a matter of time before the U.S. bashing begun. Fuck off.

In a perfect world I would say yes do away with firearms. They are dangerous and bad things definitely can happen. I remember as a teenager opening up the bathroom cabinet to get a towel and between the towels was a shiny silver hand gun. My mom has been attacked before so it made her feel safe. I just had her hide it somewhere else. She actually shot the guy that attacked her and he ran off fast. No clue if he survived, probably.. but there was blood all over the ground. Anyway I don’t’ feel safe anywhere. I think having a gun in this fucked up world is good for protection as long you take every precaution to keep it away from others...unless it's an intruder.
Every country and/or culture/belief system is different when it comes to things like this. There are some countries that let their inmates go home on the weekends and report back to prison on Monday morning. Huh? Apparently it works and rarely does anybody ever not show up. Try that here in the states!

Come on! Criticizing something is not immediately bashing!
Everything has to go so fast and speed is violence sometimes.
If you have a weapon you're supposed to have an "enemy".
And when are you going to abolish death penalty?
I used to have pretty hard lined views on arms. I still disagree that lethal weapons should be easily available but I can't say at one point in my life I used to carry a knife while saying US gun laws are crazy - I was a hypocrite.
My view now is to remember that America is a different culture to the one I was bought up in. Liberty and the right to be free to do what you want is ingrained. Another example; in the UK, socialism is more ingrained and something we strive towards yet it seems to be a dirty word in America something I didn't realise at all until about 4 years ago.
I wasn't bought up American, or Arab, or Australian or anything other that UK so that is my point of view. Pretending to understand every foreign act or law when I'm obviously bias towards my fairly nice upbringing which has always provided me with food and a roof over my head.
My point is, US bashing is fun.

Anyway...
What was the first gun you shot? For me it was a .22 rifle. I think that's the pretty standard first timer. I was about 8.

Same here, first time I fired a proper weapon (ie not including airsoft) was a bolt action and then it was the Ruger .22 (with banana clip) and after that, the Winchester .38. I've fired pretty much every type of shotgun, but never fired a fully automatic/assault rifle.

Usually at the Rod & Gun club, there will be mostly Germans there teaching their sons how to shoot. There was one boy shooting a .22 semi-automatic pistol. I'm not sure what kind it was but, I was thinking it would be fun to have one. It'd be a cheap way to shoot all day :-p

I didn't mean for a .22, I just meant in general.

Obviously I don't have to buy ammo, but how expensive is it? I've shot hundreds of 9mm and hundreds of 5.56mm in a day before, never thought about how much it'd cost someone!
the only gun i ever fired was a .22 bolt action something or other in the boy scouts. i think i had more fun bolting and loading it than i did shooting it for some reason

A box of 500+.22's can go for about $20. Where a box of 50 9mm bullets will go for from $10 - $20. for practice slugs. And the cheaper 9mms are usually non-brass shells and can jam.
I've reloaded 9mm rounds before, good for recycling brass shells.

That's incorrect math.
More criminals on the streets would be the cause of cause more crime. A weapon alone doesn't commit anything actually.

yeah I totally agree, a weapon alone doesn't commit anything. but if criminals can't get a weapon, then it's easy to avoid them or even fight them.
Here in Europe of course there's crime and a lot of criminals, but, except organizated mafias, most of them don't have guns. So yeah they carry knives and they are dangerous, but a group of people can take the criminal down, and also for the cops it's very easy.
I'm not saying Europe is better than the USA, each country has its pros and cons, and all of them have wonderful people, but in crime material there's any doubt the US has a big problem.
by the way I have never seen a gun in real life (except police).

Well I certainly appreciate your point of view, and having lived in overseas locations (Europe at the moment) since 1999, it's one that I've definitely heard several times. I don't agree with it but, I respect that your views are different from my own. I personally value and respect firearms and will teach my future generations the same respect. As a non-criminal, there should be no worries about that.
ps.
I have met SEVERAL Europeans with guns :)
