I'm going to New York in October and I would like to spend one week there and another week in another town that's close and cool because I have to get back to NY to get the flight back. So, which place would you recommend me visiting?

Boston! ;) 4 hour bus ride north. Or you could check out DC.

It’s not a metropolis but I love Provincetown...very beautiful and uniquely American...great deals in the off season... (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Provincetown,_Massachusetts)

Yeah, go to DC so you can get shot.

Pittsburgh=Most Livable City in US....again.

DIGI I loved my road trips to Pittsburgh but that's the last American town you want to visit when you are in NYC for a week. not to mention it's halfway to Chicago. but DC is on your list as number 3 and is a fine town for visiting, along with Baltimore.

there are simply too many things to choose from. but out of the east coast megalopolis, my money would be on visiting Philadelphia. (y)

Ptown is great...and I agree, the off season is great for deals. You should venture to New England in October....beautiful foliage! Martha's Vineyard is also great in the off season!

I saw some amazing pictures of New England in the fall! Beautiful! Seems like a different place to go, very opposite from NY, which is the place most people go in the US. Boston and Philly also looked amazing! I would like to stay like 5 days in a town that can offer me beauty, cheap places to go and maybe a different perspective of the US if compared to NY. I don't know, beautiful, pleasant, cheap, close to NY and party place seems like a good place to go. Hehe.:D

I'm partial to New England...especially Boston. Ocean is right here...and a short drive to the mountains. Lots of history here!

I was mostly kidding when mentioning DC, but you WILL get shot in Baltimore. Have you ever watched The Wire, msf? If not, check it out. It's a documentary about life in Baltimore.

Seriously, dude? Pittsburgh's "the last American town you want to visit?" What the fuck? When was the last time you were in the area? 1985? You do know New Jersey and Ohio (sorry eric) exist, right? Highly offended!

Trust me, all Philly's good for is a visit for a day or 2. I'd agree with NicRN, personally. New England would be the way to go.

DIGI- was trying to be cordial- you have a serious inferiority complex when you talk about Pittsburgh. I was there last in '06 and again, really enjoyed it. I have family members on my in-law side that live all over that place.
they all got cancer unfortunately.

No one wants to live there or visit there, dude.

you also left off this important part of my phrase "when you are in NYC for a week."

what about you, when were you in Baltimore or DC last? I was in downtown Baltimore as well as the historic old town type of places three times this past year and did plenty of fun touristy stuff.

Baltimore is like New Orleans. If you stay out of the ghettos you will be fine but it is worth visiting. maybe not for msf this time around though.

I don't talk about places I don't know about, so I left Boston and New England off my list. I'm sure it would be a great bet for a weekend or weeklong getaway.

I have friends in Boston so I have been there many times. It's beautiful. They have Faneuil Hall which is a free and there is always some sort of live entertainment http://www.faneuilhallmarketplace.com/

Salem Massachusetts is another place I visited because I am fascinated by the Salem Witch Trials, but it's away from the city. Boston also has a lot pubs, and of course the Cheers Beacon Hill where they filmed the opening sequence of "Cheers."

Damn I need to go back to Boston!

You gave me 2 backhanded compliments in a row, dude!

1) "Had a blast going to Pittsburgh.....that's the last place you'd want to visit."

2) "I was there in '06 and had a blast! EVERYONE GETS CANCER!!!"

You call that being cordial? Don't think defending the place where I was born and raised as having an inferiority complex. I'm very familiar with DC, Baltimore, and Philly and none of them come remotely close. Pittsburgh leads the country in technological innovation, medicine, and has some pretty awesome sports teams. Highly reputable news sources annually consider Pittsburgh to be the "most livable city" in the US. Disagree? Good. Then don't come. We'd rather stay under the radar anyway. 1) "Had a blast going to Pittsburgh.....that's the last place you'd want to visit."

once again I said it's the last place you want to visit "when you are in NYC for a week." I've done the 6 or 7 hour road trip at least twice. we made it a ski trip with a stop at the Blue Mountain and Boyce Park.

that's the whole topic of the thread before you brought in your "most livable city" statistic.

I'm just saying- Pittsburgh, Honolulu, D.C.- seems kind of arbitrary. and no one goes to Pittsburgh when they are in NYC.

2) "I was there in '06 and had a blast! EVERYONE GETS CANCER!!!"

I said the family members I know from the Pittsburgh/Rust Belt region GOT cancer.

it happens to be a true statement.
seriously, my bad.
