so a few years ago i got hold of some of his albums from Ally Al.

I think this was just before dilla died. Donuts and i think the other one was called 1st installment or something, it had about 40 short tracks on it.

Anyway, i hadnt really listened to them much and decided to revisit this week.
And despite lots of people saying how great he was i thought they were...
a bit boring.

I really wanted to like them but depsite some good ideas and samples they just didnt excite me.

Am i listening to the wrong albums, are there anymore i should try and checkout?

has he done some with proper raps on?
I am willing to be converted if someone recommend some other of his stuff.

Wow, I'm biased but Dilla is G.O.D. status with me.

I'd check out...

Ruft Draft
Champion Sound (with Madlib)
The Shining

and...

Jay Stay Paid. It was put together by Pete Rock and has an amazing about of MC's over Dilla beats.

Jay Deelicious: The Delicious Vinyl Years is a great compilation.

And check out Slum Village as well.

Maybe he's an acquired taste. But, I think he's one of the best that's ever touched vinyl and a MPC. I bought my MPC just for the fact it was the same model and year that he used. I wanted it to have that Dilla sound.

nah seriously though Donuts took a few listens to grow on me, and once it did it made total sense. Listen several times.

You mean rap albums he's produced the beats of?
Was gonna tell you to check out Pharcyde's Labcabincalifornia because I remembered he produced the album and there are some wild tracks on it. Turns out though that none of the bangers are actually his but produced by others.

I think you're onto something.

The DV comp had all the Pharcydes bangers.

If you haven't heard those joints you're missing out.

By bangers I meant The Hustle, Pharcyde, Groupie Therapy and The E.n.d. And none of those were Dilla productions. Not that his joints aren't quality, but in terms of what I envision as raw hip hop beats they're just not it. But it's all a matter of taste in the end - I'm not the biggest soul fan and Dilla's beats seem to me more soul/r&b-centric than other sounds you hear in hip hop.

see thats the thing, I wouldnt say any of those "bang" either by your definition, it's not that kind of album *shrugs*, each to their own

plenty of raw hip hop beats in Dillas catalogue though

Thank you!

Case Closed!

I understand if you don't get Dilla, but classifying him as a soul, neo-soul, jazz, hip hop producer is ridiculous. Dilla had many many styles.

Dilla is Hip Hop.
