I haven't really worked in a shop since I was 16, had bar work but not retail and I'm fine with interviews generally but I've been out of work a while, need a job and I actually really want this one. It's a sports store.

The staff there just wear a normal clothes and a bib to show they work there. Do I turn up suited like I do for office interviews or do I wear smart-casual? And how smart-casual? Like Jeans and smart casual shirt? Or suit with no tie?

Smart casual, with the emphasis on smart. Not jeans. A nice pair of khakis maybe. Pressed, not straight out of the drawer.

It's either jeans or suit trouser/pants. I could go shopping I suppose.

Meh, shopping.

i don't think you can overdress for this, but you can under dress. Go for the suite but no tie.

this.

no suit, but a nice pair of pants/shoes/shirt/tie combo would probably be best.

dress to impress. first impressions are key, people often do not respect the value in them. people see someone they perceive as a bum they already get that impression in their mind of perhaps your work either and other things. if you come in looking sharp the opposite goes to be said. if you come in a suit for this type of job though clearly you are trying to hard and that is also noted.

i always wear a suit and tie. Its easiest way to look smart. shows you made an effort and you give a shit. I sound like my dad.

I had an internal interview recently and still suited it up, even though i didnt really have to.

Mind you, i aint got the job yet.

If a guy wore a suit to an interview for retail sales I'd likely assume he was a Mormon...

^^^sssswhat im sayin.

its all relative. if your going to an interview at a Californian surf shop owned by some surfers you dress differently than if you are going for a retail job in England, than if you are going for a corporate executive job somewhere.

Ya, no suit for retail. Nice shirt and slacks.

My clothes are either smart or not smart enough. I don't own anything in between.

I do think suit is over kill. Maybe leave the jacket at home but do I tie or no tie? Don't really have any other shirts other than dress or casual skate/surf style shirts.

I have always worn a suit and tie to an interview. I even put on a suit and tie when I interviewed for a lifeguard supervisor position as a college freshman. The man and woman that interviewed me where in shorts and they laughed but I also got the job. For the record when I had to fill out forms before the interview I disclosed under a question about arrests that I had been busted for under age alcohol possession. They also laughed at that but they said that they were impressed with my honesty. So, I say always look sharp for an interview, look them in the eyes with confidence and be honest. It has always worked for me. By the way, retail positions deal with the public and if you show that you care then they will be happy to put you in front of their customers.
Good luck!

A tie without the jacket would be appropriate solid color and not the Bugs Bunny one...

So I bought some new trousers especially for this. They don't quite fit right but neither do any of my clothes except for one bespoke wool suit which is total overkill for this position.

It's going to smart shirt, new trousers and polished shoes. It's in an hour the interview, best bloody get it.

It was from a speculative CV drop so I'm fairly confident.

Sounds good, retrospective good luck to you! How did it go?

Adam

Went alright. They said they've a few more to see but unless someone blows them away I can't see me not getting it. Interviews are always hard to tell as I've had some where I think it's a given but I don't get it and others where there is no way I could of got it and did.

Too late, done.

I know. That's for the next interview because a bunch of tards were telling him to suit up for a job at PacSun.

He should have specified, though. Nordstrom=Suit. Hot Topic=Tuxedo Tshirt.

Whatever you do, don't intimidate your interviewer.

Those guys are can be all 'fraidy about hiring people who might be better at their jobs than they are.

Damn if I'd of known it was a running gig I may have suggested you dress like these cats... (http://i183.photobucket.com/albums/x265/mcmoot/70srunners.jpg)

Oh nice, we have Decathlon here in shanghai. Good value for money. I'm wearing my zippy fleecy thing right now.

I do love Decathlon. Pretty much all my sports stuff is from there including my snowboard, martial arts equipment and running attire. Not my running shoes though.

The call in a few days time is a good idea. I've been thinking about the interview and I think a few things I might of said will of made me come off a little passive (which I am but shush) so a call will confirm I ain't, I think.
