Previous curator Raf Simons today handed over the reins to Mike D
of the Beastie Boys
This L.A.-based festival running from 19th April to 10th May will be the second instalment in the Transmission Series
Mike D and other artists present the Concept Style Coupé from Mercedes-Benz

The Avant/Garde Diaries, a global online interview magazine is hosting "Transmission LA: AV CLUB curated by Mike D" from 19th April - 10th May, the sequel to a cultural festival that first took place in Berlin last year with curator, fashion designer Raf Simons. Music icon Mike D will present the event as official curator, which will feature a mixture of many types of artists, musicians, DJs and beyond.

With the backdrop of Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in New York Raf Simons officially handed over the reins to Mike D, a native New Yorker. As part of his role in the "Transmission LA: AV CLUB curated by Mike D", he serves as artistic director for the 21-day festival that will be open to the public and include the first ever viewing of the Mercedes-Benz Concept Style Coupé presented within an art exhibit.

"Growing up and living in NYC, visual art is part of my daily experience. It is part of the fabric of the city and its citizens are surrounded by it, like it or not. I've always been interested in how music has helped to inform artists work and vice-versa forming a most interesting feed back loop," said Mike D, who will enter the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame with the Beastie Boys in April. "This show to me is a great opportunity to get into that dialogue and to reach out to artists of all types that I admire. My hope is that we together create a unique and changing arts programme inclusive of painting video, installation, music, and design."

The Avant/Garde Diaries form a creative platform for topics ranging from art to fashion to music, and the innovations, trends, and culture that are shaping social discussions. The festival itself provides a platform for international artists and trendsetters under the directorship of a visionary mind, to present their perspective on the world of today and tomorrow as well as enter into dialogue with experts and the general public. A digital interview magazine at www.theavantgardediaries.com captures innovators with extraordinary ideas who are influencing culture and future trends.

"The success of the festival's first outing in Berlin proved that we were on the right track by offering younger target groups a platform for issues that they relate to and by creating awareness for new ideas and solutions," said Anders Sundt Jensen, Vice President Brand Communications Mercedes-Benz Cars, at the handover from Raf Simons to Mike D. "Mercedes-Benz has always been the driving force in automotive development. We are creating tomorrow's standard today. Challenging the status quo, breaking through the accepted limits of thinking, daring to take a new direction and releasing synergies - these are also the aims of Avant/Garde Diaries."

"The Transmission event in Berlin enabled us to impressively demonstrate that technology, fashion, art and music are effectively inseparable," said designer Raf Simons. "It's about bringing these elements together, which are the driving forces behind innovation and progress. Mercedes-Benz design and aesthetic has always attracted me and I was fascinated with the idea of them providing a platform in which I had the freedom to create an exhibit with the artists that are influencing my life. Together we created a meaningful expression of what it means to be avant-garde. I am excited that Mike D will now have the same opportunity and I look forward to seeing what he creates."

Prior to "Transmission LA: AV CLUB curated by Mike D", an Avant/Garde Diaries event will take place in Copenhagen on 29th March, 2012 with painter Andreas Emenius, who is working with musician Mikkel Hess. They will collaborate with other artists to create a festival around the theme of movement.

I went to the show tonight. So sick! Mike was running around getting things all situated. First time I'd ever seen him not on stage. He saw I was kind of hanging around and when he wasnt too busy I went up and introduced myself to him. So dope! Really a dream come true for me. He was rad and asked me if I was into African music cause i grew up in Zimbabwe and south Africa. Damn, a really great day. When I was done talking to Mike I said hello I Jerome Crooks their tour manager. He was super chill too. All around fantastic event, just wish my fellow BBoys message board homie milkboy had been there.

awesome, manwich. opening night was hectic and I barely got in with someone else's wristband, as it was full to capacity. I caught the last two songs of Santigold's performance and then I went into the gallery right as it was closing- that's when I ran into Arthur Africano.

word was that Mike D was stationed near the coffee bar that he designed- fashion and function went into play on this thing- it was a dojo looking itlaian coffee bar with a fully functioning moat-like thing with a boat floating around the structure.

but no Mike D in sight for me. I went to the Family Bookstore section and got some free postcards with "Curator Mike D" images on them (Work Hard. Play Hard. Everything at 11- Mike D) and purchased a book called "Drawings From The Film Beginners By Mike Mills" (hscII designer)

I hope to catch the Mike Mills exhibit next time I'm there and hopefully get an autograph by mr. Mills as well as mr. Diamond. I'm looking to complete my autograph pyramid as I only have MCA's right now.

also, Adrock made the music for the Mercedes installation so I am looking to take advantage of getting into the gallery way earlier next time.

manwich- what time did you arrive and which section did you see Mike D in- the gallery or the performance area?

Hi Turchinator. So I arrived at around 6:00 and initially Mike was just out by the kogi truck. He was talking to an older gentleman in a blue suit who I vaguely recognized but couldn't name. So then I was like Mike when you have a second I'd like to introduce myself and he said he was in the middle of something at the moment but later might work. So I then walked around the exhibit. I didn't know Adrock did the music for the Mercedes exhibit. That makes it Way cooler :) then I was a little nervous that I wouldnt see mike again and so I figured I would at least say what's up to Jerome. But then as I walked past the rounded sofas right near the entrance my girlfriend Claire said "he is right in front of us!" haha. I totally would have walked past him again. But thats when I went up and said hello and introduced myself. He is REALLY busy is the impression I got as he is running the show. But he gave me a few minutes of his time which was rad. Jerome said to come back on the weekends cause that is when they'd be around the show. I hope you get to meet him. So cool to meet an idol in person (scary but cool:)

I think curator Mike D hit it out of the park with the whole aesthetic design and idea of sensory overload. he put his stamp on it in his unique way. dude likes coffee and food and music so why not include ALL of them in his project?

here is the flyer they hand out at the event

http://issuu.com/theusualmontauk/docs/av_club_magazine_final_issuu

kind of awesome- the back page says

"When Mike D's in the House, what you gonna do?"

more dates or just an updated performance schedule through May 6?

they have a system now to reserve two free tickets for the weekend events through the final weekend to avoid the overcapacity complaints they are receiving from MOCA members.

they added performers to the Friday dates- Gonjasufi (?) and Special Guest(?)

rumor has Thom Yorke appearing tonight

Friday night was awesome. Mike D was in his coffee bar, Thom Yorke was just perusing the gallery before he and Nigel started spinning the night away, including a preview of their collaborative supergroup Atoms For Peace and a crowd pleasing cut of "Shake Your Rump". and keyboard Money Mark was hangin' around as well. I got a chance to congratulate everyone on a very successful exhibition that has the town buzzing.

at the end of the night, Mike D and $Mark were with a familiar faced curly blond haired dude but I couldn't put my finger on who he was. he could have been part of the art exhibit or he could have been part of the management team.

compliments to the chef Roy Choi who was handing out free Sriracha chocolate samples to the crowd.
