Its amazing how naive people can be about fire, fire codes, and general safety. Being part of a fire department has opened by eyes to so many things. I love it when I tell people they are breaking code and they get snooty or pissed at me.
Favorite: "Dude, you are parked in the red and in a fire lane." "I'll just be a minute." "Oh, ok cool, I'll let a possible fire know that and to be patient before burning."
Pyros are on a whole other level...

My dad was a Seattle Firefighter so I've always been sort of freaky about fire. Our fire doors at work are regularly parked in front of. That makes it very hard to exit/enter and impossible if wearing a Scott Air Pack and bunker gear.
The fire exits/entry have machinery shutdowns, fuel cut offs and CO2 pulls.
I used to not get too excited... then as time wore on and I continually saw cars parked in front of fire doors and other entry/exit doors it became obvious that the people responsible for our safety blatantly did not enforce or understand their job.
A few of us at work decided that the person who is getting paid to instill safety was asleep at the wheel so we began to call him and abruptly tell him every time some jackass decided to block our doors. We told him code and safety violations he was in charge of were repeatedly ignored and somebody will be held liable if we're injured, him. Things are much better after a year plus of bitching.
I am an exit strategy freak... but that could be a whole other thread.
