when "the mix up" came out it did'nt blow me away,I prefered the bonus tracks you could get off amazon that did'nt make to the album.
Anyway I've started to listen to it again whilst doing house work and when I first get up in the morning and I've started to really enjoy now(also i'm 38 now edging towards forty).

I love "The Mix Up" album, funny thing, this night I dreamt about The Beastie Boys dressed in their Gala suits, MCA was doing incredibly strange and athletic movements:)...well, I love waking up to instrumental music too and I agree, The mix up and Fibonacci sequence are dope extra tracks(y)....not to talk about my magic hat I wore at the Gala events shows, magic because after these shows, every time I put that hat on my head again, I heard the Gala event tune.

the mix-up is a pleasant listen. as long as you aren't expecting beats and raps and play it at the the appropriate time it's a delight. i think alotta people hated on it at the time simply because they're just not into instrumental music and are drawn solely to the bboys in character. i think most would agree that the vast majority of bboy albums are more or less "in your face" from start to finish, where as this is one you can easily play back in the fold with it not demanding your attention for an hour straight.
p.s. biscuits and butter was always a fav b-side of mine. (y)

Agree! I finally semi retired Hot Sauce and The Mix UP was one of the first albums I switched to. It's an album for any occasion. I remember going to my uncles and he did not want to hear Beastie Boys because he said they are loud and obnoxious. He just doesn't like rap. I put this one and he couldn't help but say how much he enjoyed it.
Fonky what a cool dream!

That's funny. I just started listening to it again this week too. It's a good album to listen to while driving to work.

I personally just didn't like it at the time because it didn't do enough. And I like a stack of instrumental music, which resulted in me drawing comparisons to said music and being a tad underwhelmed overall.
That said, time has been incredibly kind to it, and the tracks I like have only gotten exponentially better (B for my name in particular) and the tracks for which I didn't care have improved similarly (such as the Melee - a track I think you dig, McDuff).
Good post, threadstarter.

It's the sound of the album that is not pumping out to your ears straight yeah and i find it pretty funny to call an album The Mix Up while it sounds like it has not been mixed up!
My fav is 14th street, Gala Event, Electric worm...(y)

I teach 2nd grade and play The Mix-Up all the time for my kids. They love it -- I wish I could play more Bboys for them...

Great tour.
Yeah, I got to see the regular Philly show. In retrospect, I wish I had shelled out the $100 to see the Atlantic City gala event the day after. Ugh. Philly was great though.

My initial disappointment with The Mix Up was that it didn't incorporate any vocals. I was hoping for some songs like Lighten Up and Something's Got to Give. But it's a stellar instrumental album. The Cousin of Death has become one of my favorites.

This is easier said than done, for me anyhow. its good but some of it is crying out for more and, since hsc2, you can hear the mix up influence and from what i gather the tour of it was a necessary step towards the next album but apart from some great bits i am not massively on board with TMU.
I am guessing there probably were times when the bboys themselves wondered if they should add more to some tracks but when they get an idea they do it to the fullest. I have respect for them trying it and doing what the fuck they want but cant help be disappointed.

enter mario.
self-producing is definitely a double-edged sword. it's extremely valuable to have that outsider's opinion and an extra creative mind in the mix, no doubt. some external perspective, if you will.
either way, it's still great chillax music IMO.

I get a really nice "todays gonna be roock" type rush when they start to break it down heavy duty in Off The Grid.

I never understood the hate (in the press, anyway) directed at Dramastically Different. It's always been an interesting track to me. Another thing the press shitted on was the drumming. Yeah it's not Peart level but its Mike D doing his thing - maybe with slightly less gusto than the IC days, sure. I recall Adrock in an interview defending the drumming in light of those stupid Meg Whites Dad remarks.
The only thing about the playing was a bit of a reliance on the three or four note bass climb on a few of the tracks. There was either quite melodic or funky stuff, or just dumdumdumdumdumdum*and*dumdumdumdumdumdumdumdumdum .
Obviously the health thing, my own growing up a bit, these are contributing factors. But I'm bumping it now doing an assignment, and yeah, not bad times. Not consistently on the level of the older instros and could have been a bit more varied, but it was a ballsy move.

interesting, I never knew dramastically different was catching flack. i always dug that one too.
any critics getting over-critical about the the bboys' instrumental chops are completely missing the point anyhow. imperfection is their centerpiece, imo.

I don't know if I'd go that far, but fair enough. They just is what they is.
Yeah a few reviews picked on the sitar as a real weak point in the album.
