Like Steven Soderbergh once said (paraphrasing): "We had a lot of fun making Oceans 11, but if fun on the set equalled quality, Cannonball Run II would be the greatest movie ever made."
What album do you think they had the most fun making? Not what album is the most fun (personally I think LTI is), but knowing the behind the scenes vibes as well as we do (or can), how do you rank the albums accordingly?
I'd guess:
1) Paul's Boutique
2) Licensed To Ill
3) Hello Nasty
4) Check Your Head
5) Hot Sauce Committee Part Two
6) The Mix-Up
7) Ill Communication
8) To The 5 Boroughs

I agree that the mix up would be placed higher on the list. And hsc was almost a response of sorts to tmu so it would probably be higher as well

I think Paul's Boutique takes the cake, hands down. let's see...
just became rich.
just got out from under Russell Simmons' toxic finger.
moved out to the belly of the entertainment beast, LA.
nicer weather, hotter women, better weed.
living in a mansion in the hollywood hills.
rubbing shoulders with the music and film industry elite.
oh yeah, and did I forget TOTAL ARTISTIC FREEDOM?
toss some drugs and youthful energy into the mix and I'd say it sounds as close to "the dream" as one could hope for in that day in age.

From everything I've read, it seemed like LTI was more a recording of a bunch of singles that eventually became an album. It wasn't one of those deals where they sat down and just recorded for a year or two straight.
With that said, I'd usually say the younger they were the more fun they had. So I'd switch PB and LTI and then go in chronological order from there.
EDIT: Brother Mcduff...hotter women?? The hottest women in the world are in NYC pal.

Well I wasn't sure about this one because when I think of them having fun making an album I think of them in their most creative state of mind. I'd put Licensed to Ill on the bottom if it were based on that.
Paul's Boutique would definitely come first. I could listen to their stories from that time and place all day. It just sounds like a wonderful experience for them as a band, as musicians and as people just discovering themselves personally.
I'd probably pick Check Your Head next. Their shows were so intimate and full of energy.
I probably would go for Ill Communication next followed by Hello Nasty. The videos became more creative so I imagine all sorts of ideas were floating around while making the music.
When they went back in to remix Hot Sauce they seem to have enjoyed the experience a lot. From their interviews they indicated that they didn't take anything for granted so I would Hot Sauce Committee Part Two comes next.

It would be nice to ask them! But I doubt they have a favorite "fun time" each decade and each album had different experience's. It's too hard to make a list.

haha, I was quasi-quoting a passage from the Paul's Boutique 33 1/3 book. I forget who said it, but regarding their move to LA, some guy described "hotter women, better weed" as a bonus of the move.

I should have picked up on that, as I own that book. Haven't read it in a few years. My bad.

I agree...but would say that CYH was a touch more fun. They had their own real clubhouse with the studio, skateboard ramp and bball hoop. Kind of found their groove out west. Plus the expectations were lower after the commercial disappointment of PB. Not a lot of pressure.
