OK; watched the whole thing online. I don’t know how I got to watch it all the way down in Sydney when so many of you missed it? How did that happen?

Jo will fill you in better than me later……………….but…………..

…………….do you want a rundown?

Our boys KICKED ARSE.

I won’t give you every single little detail; you can watch it on HBO in a couple of weeks. If you’re outside the US; hopefully Porkys1982 will have us covered there.

Nice intro:
Chuck D made me proud to be still fighting the POWER.
LL acknowledged that he has the Beasties to thank for kicking off his career.

You could see Adam and Mike at the side of the stage, alone. Waiting to come on.

They looked GORGEOUS. Absolutely jaw-dropping.

Chuck and LL gave them three trophies. THREE. Oh, man.

They didn’t say anything about Yauch’s absence for a while. Elephant in the room. People were very quiet. I was surprised at how deeply distressing it was to see them up on that stage without him. For a second it was like these two little boys without their big brother. It just felt awful.

Now this is just a summary, y’all. There is HEAPS I’m leaving out. Anyway, I hope I get this right:

Adam spoke first. He thanked everyone in his family, Dave S; Cey, Nadia; the whole crew. Bad Brains, Run-D.M.C., Grandmaster Flash. He thanked his mother for buying him his first guitar; he thanked his father for buying him his first LP. He spoke about how his older brother and sister played The Clash for him. He thanked Kathleen for spending her life with him. He was SO emotional during the whole thing, it just slayed me. He had all these people on this shitty little piece of paper. It was so endearing.

Then Mike spoke. He thanked the family, all the peeps they’ve played with. Hurricane; DJ Double R! He thanked Yauch’s parents for letting them make hideously loud music in their house when they were kids. (Yauch’s parents were in the audience!) Mike gave a special shout-out to Brooklyn! He thanked New York for raising them. Typically, he spoke really confidently (but I sensed he was, I don’t know….shaken?). Great job, Mike, as always.
Then Mike thanked Yauch, because they couldn’t have this “family” that they have without him.

THEN Adam pulled out a sheet of paper and read a speech Yauch had written for them to read out on the night.

Now THIS you GOTTA hear.
He said FIRSTLY he wanted to thank Adam and Mike: his “BROTHERS”. I don’t think there was a dry eye in the house at this point. He thanked Kate Schellenbach; John Berry; John Berry’s dad for coming into the living room and screaming at them to stop making such a fucking awful noise! He listed all these people and places: it was like a slideshow of the past thirty years: 59 Chrystie St; Ratcage Records; MMMike, Money Mark, Eric Bobo, Amery; oh, HEAPS more; it was SENSATIONAL; I can’t wait to hear it again. And Adam read it out for him SO well. With humour, with emotion. Yauch would be SO proud of him. I hope he saw it tonight. Lastly, Yauch said he wanted to dedicate the award to his beautiful wife, Dechen and their daughter Losey, and he said he felt he was the luckiest man in the world because of his two soul mates, and the fact that he gets to spend his time with them.

Nothing at all was mentioned about his health. Or the future. Or any plans.

Adam gave a final shout-out to MMM, who then performed with Kid Rock, Questo, y’know, etc, etc. They were wearing those green jumpsuits. Cute touch. They did this extended mashup of all these classic Beastie songs. He started with a bunch of vocal samples of the boys themselves (one of which was “my man MCA’s got a beard like a billy-goat”) – which was when I just lost it. Went to pieces. Sorry guys. I can’t tell you much more about the performance. I know it started with The New Style and ended with Sabotage. SWWant was in there. Also Brooklyn. I’m sure it was great; it seemed to go down well with the crowd; but my heart was elsewhere. I was utterly heartbroken.

But without a shadow of a doubt, despite it being SO sad, everyone was also VERY happy. You could tell it meant a lot to them. They weren’t there just as a tokenistic thing. It was profoundly moving. I am so fucking proud of Adam and Mike for how they conducted themselves, and so grateful to Yauch for penning just the most incredible speech ever. Our boys were the deffest blokes in the room.

My broken heart was swelling with pride.

Backstage, Chuck D was interviewed and what he said was SO powerful. He said it was “bittersweet” because there are only three hip hop artists that have been inducted into the Hall of Fame. The first, Grandmaster Flash, could obviously not perform at the induction. The second, Run-D.M.C., couldn’t, because Jam Master Jay had just been killed. The third, Beastie Boys, WOULD have, but couldn’t, because MCA is sick. He said “it makes you think”. He said that they all take it very seriously, because it’s a benchmark.

So that gives you an idea, anyway.

Just counted on my fingers: I have now been watching Twitter and this web video feed for 35 hours straight. Crazy. No sleep til Brooklyn!

Can’t wait to see Jo’s photos. She did a GREAT job of updating us all. They are still Tweeting and they’re having the best night of their LIVES. Thanks for making us feel like we were there with you, mate. And thanks to all the peeps on Twitter who kept me company.

Peace out y’all.

xoxo

It was easy to downplay the rock hall as a signifier of relevance, and it's hard to be optimistic when shit is so heavy, but this has been a profound couple of days as a fan. Well done to the guys for the induction, amazed at their poise and strength (all of them). Thanks to jolovesmca, cj hood, mic2mic, yourself mspacman and the other fans for helping me keep up with all of this.

Heavy, but we keep on keeping on.

Nice job. You blew my little paragraph in the other thread out of the water! You hit everything right on the money.

Horovitz had what looked like a metal name badge on his sportcoat that simply said HOROVITZ.

do you think so?

I found it difficult to capture the emotion of it.

I hope you think I did them justice. They were kings among men.

We are SO lucky that we're fans of THESE guys.

What the hell are the peeps on Axl Rose's msgbrd gonna boast about?

I listened to a cool interview yesterday with Yauch on some radio show in the states around the time of the Awesome DVD. It's funny as... But there's a great piece where he says they may not be the best band in the world (debateable), but that they definitely have the best fans in the world.

And I think it's definitely accurate. Cheers for all the updates, this thread was a great report. Very bittersweet. And again, Yauch, our thoughts and good vibes are all with you. Nights like tonight must be particularly tough for Adrock and Mike D but their conduct, as ever, seems nothing short of inspirational.

Legends, and regardless of people's opinions on the awards themselves, it is a very much deserved acknowledgement of their career.

Yeah. You captured everything well. I mentioned in the other thread that it was 3 hours in when they finally got to the Beasties...and their total segment was about 30 minutes too.

I thought that Chuck D and LL Cool J gave really excellent induction speeches. This is the beauty of having people who actually know and care about you do the speeches instead of a famous younger band or whatever. So instead of a meaningless recitation of awards won and albums sold it was about how great a live act they are and how they reinvented themselves against impossible odds, turned into wonderful men/human beings, etc.

It's possible that Adrock and Mike gave the best thank you speeches of the night. I'm not sure what a casual fan would take from them but they threw in many references to friends, family, and familiar places, and both included a heartfelt thank you to NYC. (It seemed like everyone else made lame call outs to Cleveland.) I'm glad they played it straight. And then there was Yauch's note, which was absolutely perfect. As I remember it, he first thanked Adrock and Mike (which wasn't awkward despite Adrock having to read the thank you to himself). I might be wrong but I thought Yauch's second thank you was to all of the persons who were ever moved by the Beasties' music, and I fucking lost it then.

Then I knew it was going to happen, but I guess I still wasn't ready. We had the performance without the Beasties. MMM was great of course, but when three other guys got up and did those lyrics with Beastie names in them, I started to cry and couldn't stop. Honestly, it seemed like they did an excellent job and they really threw themselves into it. All of the people around me were clearly enjoying it but I don't ever want to see anyone else do those songs. Not ever. (Sorry, I'm still emotional and it's late and I'm tired.)

At some point during Red Hot Chili Peppers' set (maybe right at the beginning?) Anthony Kiedis sent good wishes to Yauch. Peppers' set was the last of the night. Prior to that, I think several people mentioned how great it was Beasties were in (outside of their own induction segment)-- Chris Rock mentioned them, Flea did, etc.

By the way, if you ever want a speech given, Chuck D should be your man.

I thought his "three minutes for hip hop", "two minutes for hip hip," was effective. He clearly had it all planned out but he didn't seem to be reading. And it was clear that no one should be shouting out nonsense during his speech. And LL is still adorable.

I clocked the show at 5.5 hours? I wonder how much HBO will use? I wish I was the one editing it.

you are spot on

I LOVED that part where Yauch "spoke" about the fans.
The people!
The people who love the music!
I was thinking: OH! That's me! That's Jo! That's Khloe!
That's our little "fan family" right there. MCA's posse!
We are all spread out around the world, in different time zones; but in that moment, we were all glued to exactly the same spot at exactly the same time.
Good, good feeling.

He is SUCH a top bloke.

you really came through for us on the updates

we knew we could rely on you

too tired to speak in full sentences now

I too watched the speeches online. I'm a 37 yr old dude and lifelong beastie fan and the ceremony reduced me to tears. It was tough seeing them there without Yauch but I felt so much pride and gratitude listening to them speak. I thought about the impact their music has made in my life and how I kinda grew up with them through the years. The beasties always masquerade their art in humor but not on this night. The speeches were heartfelt and any true fan will surely be moved when they see the telecast.

My broken heart was swelling with pride.
i couldnt agree more with you Sarah.
i gave in and finally watched it today, i REALLY was waiting to watch it in HD on May 5th, HBO...but it was KILLING me.
maybe im a baby, but tears were flowing like water from the tap. I defiantly got the most emotional w/adrock reading Yauch's speech, but who didnt?
i feel like im late, and everyone has said everything, but just to see this, knowing it happened 3 days ago, is crazy to me...I was on the edge of my seat watching the speeches on my computer screen, and my heart was going like 100mph. Idk i guess it hits everyone different, but man it hit me super hard. To see the boys in fancy clothes taking their speeches pretty serious and the intense vibe, and sorrow for Yauch was just so much for me, that i was pretty much speechless on Saturday.
i think it hit me harder because i WAS going to go to see it live.

Khloe; we are ALL feeling it. That's why I started PWR2MCA. All the negative sorrow was just slaying me. I needed so badly to do something positive for him. I'm glad others dug the idea.

You are not "late". You were practically catatonic with all the emotion on Saturday. We knew it would take a few days for you to process it. Those were your boys up there: you are their #1 fan!

You are not the only one who found it to be an overwhelmingly intense experience. Grown men wept.

Where is the link to the speeches? I wanna watch again. I was so proud of them and I won't get to see it on TV (no HBO in Australia).

Has anyone heard from Ben? Can he tape it for us? I'll bet he'll be happy to help. He is just the BEST.

It felt like he said it around 09 but I could be totally off
