The Beastie Boys were so distinctly a product of New York's five boroughs, to which they penned many an ode.
But their appeal was also widespread that the inspiration to honor them in a sporting fashion came from a guy from Tucson and another one from Southern California.
New York Mets players Scott Hairston and Justin Turner, saddened by the Friday death of Beastie Boys member Adam Yauch (a.ka. MCA), decided to honor Yauch and the Beasties by convincing teammates to forgo their usual walk-up music for Friday night's game.
Instead, the Mets strolled to the plate to an all-Beastie Boys lineup.
As the Daily News' Andy Martino notes (http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/baseball/mets/ny-mets-pay-tribute-mca-beastie-boys-citi-field-arizona-diamondbacks-article-1.1072996), third baseman David Wright's walk-up song already was the Beastie Boys' Sabotage. For Friday's game, however, Wright switched to the ageless classic, Brass Monkey.
Yauch, 47, was a Brooklyn Heights native who passed away after a three-year battle with cancer.
The rest of the Mets' starters' track selections:
Ruben Tejada, Intergalactic
Daniel Murphy, No Sleep 'Til Brooklyn
Lucas Duda, The New Style
Hairston, Root Down
Ike Davis, Fight For Your Right (To Party)
Andres Torres, So What'cha Want
Josh Thole, Make Some Noise
Dillon Gee, Body Movin'
