I wanted to bide my time to write something that was as much about my feelings of sadness but to think about the impression that Yauch made on me.
When I heard the news on Friday about Adam passing, I was rocked to say the least..not because I was shocked per se, but because this cancer had yet again taken someone dear to my heart.
Being a massive Beastie Boys fan for over 18 odd years I basically emerged myself in their music, the beliefs, the style and even the hair (see Mike D 94). The Beastie Boys was a perfect match for me, at the point in my life where I was really getting into music and culture and they represented all that was great!
Over the years I really engaged with them and felt like they were a part of me as well. I was fortunate enough to see them over in the UK on several occasions and even luckier to have met them..Yauch took the time after one gig a few years back to chat with me for a while..the guy ooozed coolness! His spirituality, his demeanor and most of all his kindess stood out.
When Yauch was diagnosed with the specific cancer he had it was a double blow...not only for one of my 3 heroes but also because my Father was diagnosed with exactly the same type of cancer only a week before. Over the last 3 years I witnessed by Father recover, then get worse, then recover...He'd often ask about Yauch and how he was doing..Last year my Father passed away after he lost his courageous battle...As the months went on I often thought about Yauch's battle and I really hoped that he'd make it through...at least someone could survive this awful disease. But as we all now know, this wasnt to be.
My heart was literally heartbroken last week, not just because Yauch had passed, but also for his wife, his daughter, his parents, friends and of course Mike and Adam...believe me I know how it feels.
I wanted to finish this long message by saying..Thanks for the music, the fun and the memories Adam Yauch..a true hero to me!
My thoughts are with Dechen, Tenzin, Frances and Noel Yauch and Mike & Adam and all Yauch's friends and us fans.
