I know this is a Fender, but what exact model is this?

and is it something custom made just for him?

this case says Custom...just curious.

I'm not sure the exact model, or if it is custom...but I recently read in an article that he used a Fender Jazz bass.
Hope that helps a tiny bit?

i had the honor of a short chat with yauch right here on the boards and he pointed out that his bass on the TT5B and TMU tours (the green one) was an ampeg. pretty sure the one in your picture isn't (almost sure that's a fender [though not your typical jazz bass]), but he did dig on ampegs apparently, at least later on.

hope this helps :o

I was just about to post about the ampegs and was doing some research as BroMcDizzle posted.

the extreme close-up shot in Something's Got To Give in AIFST was clearly an ampeg, probably an old jazz number. he uses the green ampeg throughout the concert but switches it up pretty much how he likes.

on the Gala event tour, sometimes he used a stand up along these lines to go with that sweet clear custom ampeg amp.

here's a thread from abass forum asking specifically about the AIFST shot

fender jazz mostly. the tone is mostly in the players touch. Yauch was SERIOUSLY UNDERESTIMATED on bass. he was veeeeerrrryyyy melodic.

He was an excellent bassist. He inspired me to get lessons so I could learn 'Gratitude' when I was a kid. And playing 'Tough Guy' and 'Time for Livin' were just solid fun. He always conveyed that, though. (y)

Although a solid bassist, I like the fact that he plays guitar on 'Stand Together' and on live versions of 'Maestro' (I never had it confirmed he was playing gat on the studio version but it's likely). Just switching it up that little bit. I'd often considered that Yauch played bass more like a guitarist, and Horovitz played guitar more like a bassist. In the context of Beastie Boys, Yauch was often able to freeform somewhat while Horovitz kept them in the pocket. Just my opinion, though.

I know they were all real proud of his playing on TMU, which for the most part was very melodic, outright funky and was really a crucial centrepiece to the music on that album. I think he did himself a disservice when he had to pare it back on some of those tracks to just simply keeping time ('Rat Cage' and a number of the jams which follow it), but even then he injected it with personality.

As an aside, I've been thinking recently about how interesting it was that Mario C was known for his bass-playing (uprights I think in particular, I could certainly be wrong). I wonder if they swapped notes at any point. I also find myself wondering how music, and the bass guitar in particular, entered into his relationship with his daughter.

Is this the exact bass he played? except Yauch had the pickup cover off, as well as the string guard thing?

Just like this right?

Although Yauch had a red pick guard?

Upright bass lines, fuzz bass, rat cage dum dum....I know I'll miss that.
