adams (mca) mother was jewish, father catholic. mike d and adrock went to st mary's (i believe) which is a catholic school, correct? so, the beasties are actually half jewish? (yes, i know mca converted years later to another religion)

Adrock is actually half-Jewish and half-Irish. His mother was an Irish Catholic.
The thing about Yauch is that he may have had a Catholic father and a Jewish mother, but he was raised in a household that didn't practice any religion at all. He was more agnostic than Jewish. That's part of the reason why he spent *years* soul searching for what he actually believed in. So, it's not so much that he converted to Buddhism and more that he just became a Buddhist.

lots of non catholics go to catholic school.
you're jewish if your mother's jewish is the rule of thumb.

from spin magazine, i believe from the ill communication era??
And of course, there's the Jewish issue, relevant because of hip hop's insistent anti-Semitic nattering, usually via the Nation of Islam's endorsement of such viciously fallacious tracts as Protocols of the Learned Elders of Zion. The subject still gets the devoutly secular Beasties going.
"Our Jewishness was never part of our upbringing at all," says Yauch. "I think all of us came from families with one Jewish parent and one Catholic parent, anyway."
"No Catholics in my family," demurs Mike D.
"No?"
"Damn straight." He puffs up his chest.
"I thought Hester [Mike's mother's maiden name] was," says Yauch. "Where'd Hester come from?"
"The Bronx — straight out. South muthafuckin' Bronx!" He raises up into full "Mike D" voice.
"Really?" Yauch reconsiders. "In any case, I guess I don't know what these guys' religious backgrounds are, and that's probably because none of us ever really discussed Judaism, as you're now seeing here … All I knew was that once every year or so, my mom would take me out to a Seder and my Uncle Freddy would scream, 'Pass the matzoh,' and I didn't know what the fuck was going on."
"I don't want to throw the term assimilationist around too lightly," Mike D says. "But ultimately, it was more an economic issue — moving from the South Bronx to Manhattan — than religious … And when you look at how Jews have been persecuted, and still are, assimilation makes a lot of sense … I remember one time, when I asked my pop what religion we were, he said, 'Capitalism.'"

Mike D was born into a strict catholic family, but stated (in a book I have) that views were much more Jewish oriented. I didn't know Horovitz was half Irish.
Of course our man Yauch was a heavenly Buddhist

Mike is interested in Hinduism too. I think that's part of the reason he became a vegan and started doing yoga. Not sure if being vegan explains his weight loss, though.
And don't bother asking Adrock what he believes because he will never give you a straight answer.
That being said, he rocked a sweet Virgin Mary T-Shirt in the '80s/early '90s.

hmmm...so they are/were all "half jewish"? I guess adam sandler needs to change his hanakah song. :)
but its interesting to know MCA never cared for his religion, thats kind of the same way my house was. we all went to catholic school but we never practiced it after leaving school. we never went to church, either.

Jewish is used for both the religion AND the ethnicity. They are all part Jewish in that that's where some of their ancestors came from, but none of them ever really practiced the religion.
Don't forget that Yauch is also part Swedish. His uncle Nathanial Hörnblowér comes from Sweden after all!

I thought that people thought that way, too (jewish both a relgion and ethnicity) but my best friend (the one i went to the beastie/run dmc show with in 87) is jewish but he always said his nationality was "british" (his last name was "ehrenworth") but he never care for practicing it. in his early 20's, he said he was an atheist but when he met his wife, whom was an italian catholic, he chose to become a catholic as well. but the point of my story is that when i always mocked him for being jewish, he told me "if you cut me open, you cant tell that im jewish. we're all the same on the inside. you cant tell anyone's religion unless you claim one openly."

The beasties were named in that song?
Rod Carew converted to Judaism (long while ago though.)
I got mad hits like I was Rod Carew!
I dig that Adrock won't give you a straight answer, I am the same way. I've been torn between many different beliefs.
Mike D Hindu? Hm I didn't really expect that. Also I figured his weight loss was from his height expansion. My dad told me being Vegan could actually cause weight gain when someone switches to a highly fruit oriented diet the sugars can plump you right up.
Yauch got me interested in the studying of Buddhism being that I trusted his judgement it sparked interest. I can never say I am one thing or another though.

im still on the fence about religions. after we were told that my mom had just weeks to live, I ran into an old neighborhood friend and asked her to visit my mom. she had told me that her father was diagnosed with cancer and was going for kemo and one day, he had picked up a hitchhiker in the parking lot of all american burger in "massive pee-pee". he asked to get dropped off by the high school. he spoke with her father and he told him he was worried because he was going for an operation to remove a tumor. he said "not to worry and God will save him". the next day, stacey, gave her father a "saint" card, for good luck. well, he was speechless because he said the saint on the card was the man he picked up hitch hiking. he went in to remove the tumor and they said it was gone. so now, he is convinced that he was blessed by st. paio and now he goes around blessing people and preaching. i asked her to ask her father to do the same and he never did. now, why would st paio cure her father and not my mother? we had bad luck all out life whereas her family, always had money and good luck. I just never understood it.

Well, I'm not sure if he's 100% Hindu or anything. I can remember an interview saying he has a statue of a Hindu god in his house and there was that blog post from 2007 where he talked about visiting a Hindu temple. At the same time, he once did an interview with The Neptunes in like 2001 talking about God and how much strength they get from him. So, it's possible Mike D believes that there is one all-powerful being who created the universe, he just doesn't commit to one organized religion. Which would make him more of a Deist.
Adrock believes in the sandwich.

Not that it really matters what their religion and beliefs are, I can tell you what I know from what I have read over the years. First off, Yauch went the Tibetan Buddhist route while Adrock has never publicly proclaimed any sort of religious ties. Mike D is all about the Yoga and spirituality so I guess let's just call him new-agey and leave it alone. He has eaten fish in the past year so hopefully there isn't someone who's a vegan because Mike D told them to not eat any animal byproducts because that person is probably going to rush to their closest in n out or shake shack before finishing this post.
As far as parents go. Yauch's father was raised Catholic and his mother was raised Jewish. Adrock's father was raised Jewish and mother was Catholic. Now for the person who said Mike D's family was catholic but identified with Judaism, I applaud your creativity however Mike D's parents are 100% Jewish. Let's look at the evidence. His last name is Diamond; his father was an art dealer; he grew up on the upper west side; if that's not enough to tell that the guy grew up more jewish than anyone in israel, he's stated that his parents are both jewish in magazine articles back in the 90's. Plus, I've met his mom and she's very sweet. And very jewish. If there is any one more "Jewish" than Mike D, I'd like him to teach me how to speed read in Hebrew.

I don't know how much this'll help, but Adrock's wife is an atheist.
And as an added bonus, Mix Master Mike is Filipino and Jewish but is a Christian, just going by the crucifix that he always wears and the fact that he always does the Sign of the Cross before going on stage.
There, I think that covers everyone.
If you know the Beastie Boys, and they know you, you really are exposed to EVERYTHING.
They fuckin better be because 100% Jewish is the the only way I take my rap music. With the noise and the carrying on.

I think the point should be that they are spiritual people... I mean shit I got crazy mix of religion (not really) but as stated since my dads mom wasnt jewish he is only half jewish and that only makes me a quarter but it doesnt matter because we are Lutheran and not dont practice Judaism, but I wouldnt really be orthodox if I did practice. I went to a buddhist meeting and it was really cool and positive and I like it and would be more interested in checking it out, but bottom line is I have a higher power and am spiritual and shit....

Decent guys, f-ing kick ass MCs and that's why we're all here. For the music and to respect the artists who made it. Adam, Adam, & Mike. Anything else isn't even worth talking about.

A Tibetan tradition which is becoming more popular in the West is to get part of the remains of the deceased (e.g. ashes, hair, nails) blessed and then put into statues, tsa-tsas (Buddha images made of clay or plaster or stupas (reliquary monuments representing the Buddha's body, speech and mind).
Namaste!
