MCA will not be on the cover of Rolling Stone. A talented actor will be on the cover but I thought Rolling Stone was predominately a MUSIC magazine and I wonder how could someone with as much influence as Adam Yauch not take precedence?

Sad that MCA didn't get the cover considering that Rolling Stone did a full-on Peter Dinklage profile just last year (not that its his fault).
Found it sad in the write-up when Perry Farrell said that Yauch was giving up the studio.

It sucks but it's not surprising. RS is and has been completely shit for most of my lifetime (and I'm old so that's saying something). Yes, they can still cover classic rock and celebrity bullshit but they haven't properly understood modern music in forever. They routinely ignore important developments until it's so widespread it can't be denied and then they cover the phenomenon rather than the actual music. I'll also cite their laughable list issues, especially the guitar players one.
What REALLY sucks is that he got such a small article as well; it's basically a news item, not a tribute. So the cover is misleading as well. It wasn't a good enough article to justify a cover even if they hadn't already promised the cover to the actor or whatever happened. I assume they had a tight deadline but it's still ridiculous. It would have been better to slip in a tiny news item and write a proper tribute in the next issue. I already loathed that magazine so no surprise but I have continuing disappointment. The disappointment comes from it being one of the only "music" magazines still around.

Rolling Stone is annoying. I cancelled my subscription years ago. It is not a counter-culture magazine nor is it cutting edge on politics.
They were at one time that connection that really meant something. How all of this information about great bands and political action is so easily obtainable on the innerwebs by a goofball like myself yet Rolling Stone misses it amazes me.
And to have a chance to put MCA on the cover now, when record stores all around Seattle have Thanks to MCA on their windows and readerboards...
Rolling Stone is just dumb enough to further alienate those it should embrace and respect.
Shooting them off a letter right now.

Guys I went ahead and scanned what Rollingstone did publish on Adam. They revealed that that over the past three years Yauch's cancer continued to spread. That of course was what I thought. :/ And Mike D backstage at the ceremony said they would have traded anything to have had Adam there with them, but he was grateful for the relationship between the three of them. :(

funny because that is exactly how I started my letter!
Yeah I may of gone overboard, after writing Dear Rolling Stone, My first sentence was,
How dare you not give Adam Yauch (MCA) of the Beastie Boys the Cover of Rolling Stone.
Then went on with what a grocery store checkout rag they were and how grateful I was that Yauch never sold out and brought his game face to everything he did. Unlike RS blah, blah, blah........ and so on and so forth.
I should re-focus, concentrate, re-write. A little humility may work better for all involved.

Part of me thinks they just did not have time to write something proper.. They did not have a lot of turnaround time to get something about there, but they felt they needed to say something. I am going to give them the benefit of the doubt and give them until the next issue to properly address his death.
If they have a better spread in the next one, then I will be upset.

I agree, maybe it was already published or some shit to switch up the cover. I find it hard to believe they would not do a "In Memory" issue. Shit, they better.
If they did have something in the works, why half-ass it with some shitty TMZ article regurgitation? Fuck, some british boy band got a biggie write up the issue before. It's just the tipping point for me of a "music" magazine that's been on a steady downward spiral for decades.
Not to argue that Michael Jackson wasn't one of the greatest performers of all time, but when he passed, RS did it right. And that's for a man with a very questionable past that ultimately turned into an addict which led to his demise. The media was so eager to blame the doctor as the devil, but I think it's safe to say that if Michael Jackson wanted unheard of amounts of propofol, Michael Jackson's getting his propofol. Michael was just as much to blame. So considering his past, and compared to the life of Adam Yauch as an entertainer and humanitarian, it's a fucking shame a similar tribute wasn't received.

That was really cool of her to offer up her house to Yauch. There's something so moving about that: this legendary New York rapper, dying of cancer, who moves to Tennessee to ride horses. That is beautiful. Having horses so intertwined with my soul, I understand their healing powers all too well. Sheryl went through her own cancer battle and Adam was also friends with Lance Armstrong. Adam was supported very well, especially by those who have gone into the trenches of cancer.

I'm glad they paid him the respect of putting him on the cover. I suppose that no article was going to satisfy me, but I wish they had made more an effort to explain why he and the band mattered musically and how he was a talented musician instead of spending so much time re-explaining that he had a personality change after the FFYR video.
Yeah, definitely agree. They definitely couldn't do it in 4 pages or whatever it was.
I did like how they talked about MCA's reverence for Spoonie Gee though, I was expecting Rolling Stone to overlook that.

My guess is that Adrock made the beat on the 808. [I'm guessing this because my hazy memory tells me I read that in Ronin Ro's book. "The Reign Ruin & redemption of Run-D.M.C. & Jam Master Jay"] and that MCA said "let's flip that beat around and see what it sounds like".
In the same book Run claims it was his idea and Adrock says he's nuts.

Yeah, I meant who ran it backwards and created the final beat on the record.
I read a quote where DMC also says that Run did it

And I still don't get why Rush thought running it backwards was a mistake....

I can't bring myself to read it. Just the finality of it is seriously depressing.

Whoa. I never realized that before. Cool. Well, Rick Rubin produced this song and if memory serves the Beastie Boys are part of the "yeah" crowd.

well after listening to them both, it sounds like it could easily have been a tape loop of the T La Rock beat as a starting point to make the one you linked up. That horn sample in It's Yours sure sounds familiar. Or they could have replayed that beat from scratch on the 808. But either way it sounds like the T La Rock beat to me now.

So after a long trek over the mountains, through the woods and a forded river or two, I finally found a copy of the R/S. The land of green and yellow ducks had disappointed me immensely up until I landed wearily upon the formidable B & N.
I started reading the article once I got home, but decided to put it away until I could focus on it completely. I pulled it out again when I was in bed. Overall I thought it was a nicely written article. I can see why it took a little time to get it out after Yauch had passed. I would have liked to have seen a picture of Yauch horseback riding, but that's ok. I actually had a dream I *saw* a picture. When I woke up, it was one of those moments where I thought it was real. So, I guess my request has been fulfilled. :)
Anyway, they picked a very nice, handsome picture for the cover. They could have gone a few different ways, but they chose well. The date printed on the front is also my birthday which is cool, I guess.

I loved the photo they used too, but the way he looked before he got sick was really who he had become as a person. He had a lot of really nice photoshoots in those last years. But oh well.
I had no issues reading the article. It's video/audio that I can't do, but print articles I have been fine with. Even though this one was hard. I sorta speed read it because the focus was mainly on his battle. But at the same time the way he was described by Ms. Crow was really beautiful. I mean I trust her when she says he was radiant and he was peaceful. Feels good to know that.

I met Ms. Crow a few years ago at a cycling event (when she was still with Armstrong). She was very lovely lady and generous with her time. I would have liked to have talked horses with her, but there was too much going on. It deeply touches my soul that Yauch and his family spent time with her on her ranch.

I've heard nothing but good things about Sheryl. My friend who is a flight attendant had her on her plane and she was brave enough to ask for an autograph. She said she was nice, talkative and even offered her gum and then gave her the pack of gum before she got off the flight.
I am not surprised he spent that time with her. I knew they were really good friends. :o

I also think during recording "It's yours" they saw Jazzy Jay from Bambaata drinking Brass Monkey which helped spawn the eventual song.
I forget where I heard that......

I got lucky and stumbled upon this magazine in the airport on my way to vacation during my birthday week.
I started reading it and could not stop till I was done. Seems the whole acid talk would of been better served somewhere else. I guess it is what it is, but when I put the magazine in my backpack I was thinking fuck rolling stone for reporting this.

Yeah I felt that was a bit off, it's not like he talked the acid thing publicly. But then again, maybe they had the sense internally to call a spade a spade. Mike D even talked about it in his little interview. Crazy.
