There will be more opportunities. I know somebody who is organizing a day to celebrate all at the same time in the comfort of our own cities/homes. So that will be another chance. And then of course there is August.
For those who can make this event let us know how it went and take some photos if you can!

Sounds cool. Exactly who is organizing this? Kinda sounds like it's well-organized and kinda sounds thrown-together...
His name is Mike Kearney; he's a college student from Boston. His links are up the top. MCA was his hero. He's doing this because none of the other fans had organised anything quite like this in New York, yet. (At least; he hadn't heard of any who had.) So he stepped up.
We just met on Facebook and he seems like a genuinely cool guy. I don't know him at all; but Beastie fans are family; right? We've chatted a bit over the past couple of days. He's supporting PWR2MCA. I like him already!
He's trying to make this as huge as possible; but he's doing his best to be careful with issues like crowd safety.
I know he would love it if any of us helped to get the word out. Mix Master Mike retweeted him the other day.
He's not on this messageboard so I said I'd help promote it here on his behalf. Anything I can do to help; y'know?
I feel very far away down in Sydney so this is my way of contributing. (I wish I could come!)
xoxoSarah

Thanks Ms PacMan. I respect the guy for stepping up. I was hoping there would a more formal, official/organized deal. It could be a fundraiser for cancer research as the backbone of the event. Ya know something the PR/management side of the business put together celebrating Adam's life and legacy...while doing some good in the world.

...........I'm sure that will come...........in time............
It's still very raw.
This; I'm sure; will be the first of MANY.
One party is NOT gonna be enough to celebrate the life of this man.
We're gonna have to rock it eight days a week.

i'm a Kiss fan, buy my boys are bigger fans...anyway, they used to have Kiss conventions where collectors, sellers & fans would get together and celebrate the band. usually someone from Kiss' inner circle would show up for a q&a and they might even have a cover band perform.
this would be a great opportunity to start a Beastie Boys convention...it could be in a ball room of a hotel where people who attend could stay.

I like the idea but would want to keep it away from the big corporate money grab type of thing. Charity/fundraising theme vs. slap a beastie logo on everything and sell it. knowhatimean...

And as for August we have enough time I think to plan that to make it something special. ;)

Jo,
Like an annual official unofficial beastie boy celebration that would start in New york City and in the beginning shared in other cities to pay respects, but would be such an event that it would evolve on its own?

God I wished I could've been there. If I could've made it, I would've written "As long as I'm alive, MCA will live in my heart." What can I say, the loss of Yauch has just been... I don't know, one of those "where were you" moments for me. I can't stop thinking of the band, and Yauch's family and just hope to god that they know that NONE OF US gets out of here alive, and that's a fact -- but if any of us could touch as many people as Yauch did then that would be a life well-spent. I hope that there is pride and joy for being Yauch's kin, and not only grief.

:D i just went up to kathleen and adam and told them "im a big dork and im live message-boarding this. do you have any words for the bbmb?" kathleen was totally cool, we talked a little bit. she offered ME her condolences (after i gave her mine) bc she said we're all going thru this loss. that was just amazing to me. and adam pause a bit when saying what he said, he was trying to find the right words, i think. it seems like this thing both made him very happy and very sad. as it was for us all. i can't believe i got to chat with them (a lot too!), truly amazing.

I fucking love Kathleen. So glad Adrock has such a strong woman at his side, especially when he just lost his closest friend. And how sweet of her to say that we are all going through this together. I mean yeah we are but they are treating the fans so kind. Just him being at this event speaks volumes. I hope we continue things like this just so Mike and Adam know that the fans are always going to be there for them no matter what.
Still can't accept this. :(

"He talked for awhile about the band. He said that he had always wondered why people bought their records. When people laughed, he was like "No seriously!"* He said that he thought a large part of it was that they were such good friends, and had been since high school, that there was so much love between the three of them. He felt it was evident in their music, and that people connected with it. I agreed, but pointed out that their music was also incredible. I told him that from my perspective, speaking as the guy on the other side of the barricade, to me it was as though growing up we were all on a ship, and the Beastie Boys were up on the crow's nest hollering "LAND, HO!"He said he figured that it was closer to the truth to say that they were on the floor with lampshades on their heads, and that had they been in a crow's nest they'd have likely fallen out of it."

Yeah! It was so cool that the Beasties were such good friends and it really did carry through in the music. They had the courage or crazyness or whathaveyou to put out music a lot of people would never put out, because it breaks the mold. I guess it would be hard for the three of them to be that introspecitive, and see what we see in them. The three of them together could make just about anything work.

MCA Day.
by Matthew Hamilton on Sunday, May 20, 2012 at 1:40am ·
So I left the house and drove to Poughkeepsie to catch the Metro North into the City. I couldn't really afford this trip, but I also couldn't NOT go. I knew that if I hadn't gone, I would have regretted it. I got into Grand Central, jumped on the 4 train, and got to Union Square at about noon-thirty. After the prerequisite iced venti Americano (with extra ice) from Starbucks, I made my way over to the park and looked for a giant boom box blaring Beastie Boys music. It only took about 3 seconds to find it. Mike, the guy who organized the event, had some bomb remixes playing, and there were books and pages where fans could sign and write notes to the guys. I wrote in the book and drew a couple of doodles on the pages, and just kind of hung out, taking in the scene, talking with people and digging the beats. It was cathartic. So I'm just hanging out, drinking my iced espresso, looking down and rapping to myself along with a Beasties track, bopping along, and for no real reason I just kind of look up. I see Kathleen Hanna and...
"Adam," I say.
The motherfucking KING AD-ROCK looks at me and says, "What's up, man?"
I extend my hand to shake his, and he gives me the bro hug.
"I love you, man," I say. I don't know why I said that. Also, I know why I said that.
"I love you too!" he replies.
I show him the front of my shirt, lyrics which he is obviously familiar with.
"Uh huh, uh huh, nice."
"Now check out the back." I turn around.
"That is a fucking awesome shirt. Where did you get it?"
"There's a guy I know who has a print shop, and I had him make it for me."
"Nice."
I proceed to tell him how fucking awesome his band is, and how the loss of MCA has made me feel like I've lost a close friend or a member of my family, I thank him for the music, and having said my piece, I resolve to leave him be. I immediately realize that I'm missing the photo opportunity of a lifetime, and I'm also acutely aware of the fact that my phone is very nearly dead, and that the batteries in my camera are fully dead, even though I put fresh batteries in the damned thing on the train.
I find him and ask, "I'm sorry dude, can I just get a picture?"
"Of course, man."
I'm fumbling with my phone now, having shut it off before changing trains in an effort to save juice. It takes an eternity to boot up.
"Upgrade, my friend. It's time to UP GRADE..." says Ad-Rock, laughing.
My phone finally finishes booting and I hand it to this woman and ask her to take my picture with Adam.
"It's seriously low on juice," I say. "Just tap the screen."
She goes into confuse-o mode. "Oh my god, it's so dark. Why is it so dark? I can barely SEE anything..." our intrepid photographer says.
I'm thinking to myself, "Oh my god, just tap the screen before the fucking thing shuts itself off..." but what I say is, "Yeah, it's dark because the battery is about to die. If you just point it near us and tap the screen, I'll see what we get when I get home."
We get the picture taken, and I thank him, resolving again to just leave him alone from here out. I stand to the back of the crowd, just watching. I walk over to the table where people had been writing tributes, and draw a cartoon of a skateboarder doing a kickflip with "MCA" written on the bottom of his deck. A light bulb goes off. I pocket the Sharpie that I've been doodling with.
Adam and Kathleen are mobbed now, pretty much everyone who is in the park for MCA Day has realized that they're here.
I walk over sheepishly and say, "Hey man. Can I bug you for one more thing?"
"Aw jeez, This guy again. I hope I don't see you again after this!"
"Well I think it would be pretty awesome if you did, but that's beside the point," I say.
Kathleen laughs. "We're going to see him at breakfast tomorrow!"
"Yeah, 'Hey guys! What's for breakfast?' " Adam laughs. "What do you need, man?"
I hold up the Sharpie. "Sign my shirt?"
"Ahhh ok!" He grabs me by the shoulder and yanks me over to him. He signs my shirt.
I decide that now I really am going to leave him alone, for real this time, and I hang near the back of the crowd, watching Adam do his thing. He's gracious and patient with everyone. He gives out a million hugs, takes all kinds of pictures with people, autographs everything in sight. I gravitate toward him as the crowd thins out. I'd been talking with some folks, and our conversations sort of begin to blend together. After a while it's me, Ad-Rock and a few others talking about MCA, and the Beastie Boys. Eventually it's just me and Adam talking.
I tell him all of the things that I've been thinking and feeling since Yauch died.
How when "Licensed to Ill" came out I was 13, and my friends and I completely WERE the skate rat punk rock kids who I felt like that record was for. How that record made me investigate hip hop deeper than "Walk This Way".
I tell him about how when "Paul's Boutique" came out, for my friends and I, it was like a secret handshake. That album wasn't really promoted much, so when it was new, and for the first few years after it came out, familiarity with it was almost a rorsharch test of cool. You could put that record on and blow people's minds if they hadn't heard it before, and most people hadn't heard it before.
I tell him that I consider "Check Your Head" to be our generation's "Sgt. Pepper". (And it is. "Check Your Head" is a watershed album, and a work of genius, forever altering the musical landscape after it's release.)
I start to get a little choked up. I tell him how lucky I now feel to have seen them play live, and how awful I feel for him, and for Mike D, and for all of Yauch's family and friends, the people who knew and loved him. I tell him how I even feel just a little bit silly for taking the news of MCA's loss so hard, and so personally, since I didn't actually know him.
I tell him about how I feel like as they grew, and considered their place in the world, and how they wanted to relate to it, we were all doing the same thing right along with them. I'm having a hard time holding back tears as I talk.
He puts his hand on my shoulder, looks me dead in the eye, and says, "WE grew up together" motioning back and forth between him and me with his index finger.
I'm wiping tears from my eyes.
Here I am talking to him about what HIS band and HIS friend meant to ME. And here's Adam Horovitz consoling me. Offering me comfort.
He talked for awhile about the band. He said that he had always wondered why people bought their records. When people laughed, he was like "No seriously!" He said that he thought a large part of it was that they were such good friends, and had been since high school, that there was so much love between the three of them. He felt it was evident in their music, and that people connected with it. I agreed, but pointed out that their music was also incredible. I told him that from my perspective, speaking as the guy on the other side of the barricade, to me it was as though growing up we were all on a ship, and the Beastie Boys were up on the crow's nest hollering "LAND, HO!"He said he figured that it was closer to the truth to say that they were on the floor with lampshades on their heads, and that had they been in a crow's nest they'd have likely fallen out of it. He asked me about me, where I was from, and I wasn't surprised that he hadn't heard of Jamestown, New York. I also wasn't surprised that he knew exactly where Hudson is, and wasn't surprised to hear him name drop Germantown, Clermont, and Red Hook - all towns a few miles south of Hudson. He was coincidentally wearing a baseball cap that said "Catskill Mountains" on it. We spent a good ten minutes or so after that just kind of bullshitting. Some more people came up, and since I had just spent like twenty minutes talking with Ad-Rock about MCA, the band, life in general, and other shit, I figured I really couldn't ask for anything more. I went back across the street to Starbucks for more iced espresso, and I stood in the ludicrously long line for the one bathroom in that place. When I got back to the square, the event's organizer, Mike Kearney (no, not THAT Mike Kearney) was flagging me down.
"Yo, Ad-Rock is looking for you."
"Ok..."
"Theeere he is!"
He said he wanted to thank me for coming out and for what I'd said about Yauch and the band. I thanked him for the music, and I thanked him for being a Beastie Boy.
And I said, "I fucking LOVE you guys man. All three of you.".

Hi guys, I'm out in the Bay Area and while I couldn't be at this celebration, I want to thank Mike Kearney for setting this up, and all the fellow fans who helped out. Judging from the pics, I've never seen Ad Rock looking so glum, but you guys managed to get him smiling a few times throughout the day. Good job, looked like the pudding was back in his pants for a little while. No matter how horrible things seem at times, gotta remind ourselves we are only human and a sense of humor is worth it's weight in gold. But it's not easy... shrug.
I'm also glad MCA DAY wasn't invaded by the usual outrageous media circus monkeys. You know who I'm talking about, the type of people who shove a microphone into a person's face while they are extremely emotional or would rather not be questioned, then they say things like "How does it feel to be blah blah blah right now?".
Anyway, Mike did a good deed, and so did everyone else who helped out. Props to all of you.
wish i could have been there. great job of mike for organizing all this and pauli for reppin the mb fam for a minute even if it resulted in her friends making fun of her interwebz ways.
and good point about the media, iamthemaestro. it really would have ruined a nice thing.

I thought I was doing much better these days but seeing pictures of the MCA day and reading stories of people there (especially the one with this Matthew guy) brought back the tears.
and I have to say that I of course always had a LOT of respect for Adrock, but the fact that he showed up and consoled so many fans just blows me away.

does Mike Kearney post here? does anyone know his background?
No; he's not on here, CJ..................
He did a photo for my PWR2BEASTIES project.
And he contacted me last week because he knew I was the PWR2MCA grrrrl.
I asked him if I could help. I'm all the way down in Sydney so I couldn't get on the ground but I'd do anything for the boys..........so I offered.
Mike's not on this msgbrd so I asked him if he wanted me to post on his behalf (which I why I started this thread). And you know; field any questions from the msgbrd crew. He had enough to take care of. It was the least I could do!
He's a college student from Boston; couldn't be any sweeter. Really just a top bloke.
He 's on Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=634880282
He started this simply because none of the other fans had done anything quite like it; yet. He can't get over the fact that he started this whole thing to say "thankyou" to a Beastie Boy..................and now he's got a Beastie Boy putting a post on the blog thanking HIM!
Magic.
Anyway tell me if you want to say anything to him; I can pass it on for ya.
xoxoSarah

I'm so sad I had to miss this event (family activities planned before I learned of this - Mr. BGirl and I have a little boy now) but so glad that it took place and that Adam was there to connect with fans. I hope it was somewhat healing for all.
I love the idea (mentioned earlier in this thread) of a regularly occurring Beastie convention... I'm sure Adam and Mike will work to preserve their band's legacy but we can do our part too... they certainly deserve it. (y)

A regularly occuring Beastie convention could be cool. But I wouldn't dare suggest it to them now, nor do I think anyone else here would (yay for common sense!)
Or maybe since Mike D was getting more involved with art shows, they could do some type of traveling Beasties exhibit, and a little Q&A for fans. I dunno.
Whatever happens, I'm sure the Mike and Adam will do something nice for the fans. But it's gonna take some time, and I feel for them right now (as I'm sure everyone on this board does). :/

My understanding from the original post about it is that it would be organized by fans, for fans... not unlike MCA Day was. Just throwing out my support for the idea.

Mike's a great guy, he's just another fan paying it forward for Yauch. What he did was wonderful.
You know they have a get together every year for Jam Master Jay so it's fitting that we'd do this for MCA as a fandom. We don't have to put pressure on Mike and Adam. NO pressure was put on Adam. He just showed up because he wanted to. :D
From what I heard from Mike, he seems to like the idea of us all meeting up again for Yauch's bday. (y)

I envy all of you able to attend this, Vegas is entirely too shallow to anything close.
I met Adam, Adam, and Mike here in Vegas after the $2Bill show and they're all very nice people. I have met a lot of musicians in my time, both newer, and older than the Beastie Boys and I am still struck by how gracious they have been.
Yauch personally touched my life in many ways, from his gravel throated delivery, to his filmmaking, snowboarding, buddhism, etc. I found myself in similar situations during the time these records were coming out and would revisit them during similar times down the road.
I hope Yauch attained enlightenment, he earned it.
