That sounds like a good time. I probably won't be able to go (kids, job, etc) but you mentioning the Original X-large store reminded me of the time in 1994 that my college photography class took a day trip to NYC. We were supposed to go to the Metro Museum of Art but once we got off the bus we were on our own. My friend Justin wanted to find that store so bad. We spent all freaking day looking for it. After a few 40's (don't ask me how we got them...it wasn't that hard...lol) we found it and he got his shirt and hat that he wanted. To this day I couldn't tell you the address. I was too wasted. Never did make it the museum.

Oh I wanted to mention. If you do start to get a lot of replies about this event and it's promoted well, you might want to think of putting together a fb page which might help keep the word out better and we see who all is coming etc... talk more about plans. A lot of people aren't on this forum but almost everybody using fb..... just some advice. ;)

Anyone want to make a cool graphic for the FB page?

Also, I think some Bboy karaoke may be in order after Arrow. Anyone know a good spot?

If nobody does it I can have a really nice one done for you. A friend of mine is a graphic artist for websites. She's doing a lot of Beastie/MCA wallpapers for me. Just tell me what photo/text you want on it.

So the day tour would be on the 4th as well correct? I think then maybe I will fly in on the 3rd and Jason nothing is planned Sunday right? Then I would book my flight back home on that day. If anybody is going to be there Friday let me know, maybe some of us can meet up that day too.

I plan on traveling home on Sunday as well. Not sure if I will be there on Friday or not. I will put together an itinerary for the day...really it's just a few hours of touring around to different sites and then the party at night.

In regards to nobody playing the boys for more than 2 hours...I reached out to a few places and Saturday is their busiest night so they weren't able to accommodate us for the whole night. If someone has the inside scoop as to a place that would play the boys all night let me know and we can switch it up.

Jo- I'll let you know about the graphic this week. Thanks!

Okay Jason sounds good. I will hold off mentioning it anymore until everything is solid so that way folks aren't confused! I did get some feedback on facebook and some fans were saying that they were going to clear their schedules to attend.

I imagine that August will be the first time me hearing Beastie Boys music again because here at home I can control it, but at this event I won't be able to. I will prepare myself. I have enough time to prepare.

JasonP
05-21-2012, 07:16 PM
It will be a nice time for everyone. I just would like to get the opportunity to spend some time with other fans...only other times this would happen is for their shows.

Arrow Bar should be great...but I am willing to give it a few days to see if someone can come up with something better...either way Aug 4 we will be partying to some Beastie Boys.

P.S. I invited Jim Shearer through email...we should put some pressure on him to make an appearance. :)

So excited. I noticed everything falling into place for this event like with the park thing coming into play and having the opportunity to appreciate and experience these great things about Yauch and the Beasties together. Mike (MCADAY) told me that everything was perfect that day when Adrock came down. He said the sun was shining and he truly believed that Yauch's light was shining down on them.. :o

And he said it was lowkey, nobody was making Adrock feel like he was on display. I just love hearing that.

Building on the karaoke idea...
[I just realized there is a designated place for the party... sorry about that - let me know if you think this won't work]

Does anyone have a contact at Hip Hop Karaoke NYC?

I just found a blog post by Hip Hop Karaoke NYC and saw on May 11th they did a Beastie Karaoke night at BB King's.

Maybe we could reach out to them and do another night in honor of MCA on his birthday? I think we'd have to arrange a place for the party and then they show up and bring the gear. Looks like this type of karaoke is a challenge - no vocals provided... so you gotta know your stuff. Are we up to it? I think we are. ;)

Check this out - these are the songs they added in honor of Yauch.

http://blog.hiphopkaraokenyc.com/2012/05/hip-hop-karaoke-friday-beastie-boys.html

Anybody want to see if we find a place if we can have these dudes come down and help us throw a proper party for Yauch? I have no idea about cost or what but I am thinking this could be REALLY fun.

What do you all think? It might be worth making a call to find out. I'd be willing to look into it or help coordinate if you need help!

Go for it..currently the plan has us hanging out listening to the boys until 10pm...I'd be down for Karaoke after that. I actually looked into Karaoke at a place by the Arrow bar on Ave A. We could rent a Karaoke room for $8 per person...they currently only have 10 songs by the boys...but maybe we could bring some material. Or we could find another joint...there are tons of Karaoke bars in Manhattan.

I honestly am not sure if the majority coming to the party would be down for this or not...I'm open to the idea.

I am flying from Houston and it's LaGuardia. I believe Kennedy is further out on Long Island. I'd say LaGuardia. It's closer to the city! :) I am coming on that Friday and staying the weekend. I was gonna ask if anybody else wanted to meet up that day then I'm down! I'll be bringing my friend with me. ;)

you can fly into any of the three airports and easily reach parts of the city that you see fit. I always prefer public transportation vs. cabs.

JFK is in Queens, as is LaGuardia.

you can get directly into Brooklyn or Lower Manhattan faster from JFK, take a $5 Air Train and then hop on the A subway line at Howard Beach to your preferred destination.

from LaGuardia, you can the M60 bus into Harlem and transfer along 125th Street for the Upper West or Upper East Side for one subway fare($2.25)

from Newark, it's about a $12 Air Train ride directly into Penn Station (up on 8th Ave) or you could do a couple options with a transfer and use the PATH Train for around $5.50. make sure you don't get out at Newark Penn Station and you go all the way into NYC

We did a bbmb meet up almost 10 years ago in nyc- if you all fly into the same airport, you could share your arrival times and have the first person at a terminal grab a cab, and then have each cab pick you up accordingly (in order of terminal), which is what we did...

you can then share the cab fare into the city ($45-55-ish), which is maybe close to what you'd pay for all the public transportation if there are 3-4 of you.

it's a great way to get to know each other on the ride in (even though you feel like you've known each other forever from being on here!)... we also shared rooms, which ended up being cool...

it was all of our first trip to nyc, so we were all intimidated, but once you've been, you'll realize it was a lot of unnecessary stress...

I used to post a lot here back in the day, but it's been awhile! I've been lurking here a lot since 5/4. It's been really comforting to read everyone's posts here and see that I wasn't alone in my feelings of loss being more intense than I ever would have imagined. I haven't posted up until now because I felt like there was nothing I could say that would really do justice to what I've been feeling since Yauch passed away...but then, just now, I figured this little RSVP is as good of a "comeback" post as any. :)

Looking forward to celebrating a great man and an amazing band with all of you!

Do you have anything planned in manhattan? I was thinking maybe the subway entrance to the back door of the Ed Sullivan theaters where they shot their video for the letterman show? I am a little over an hour away from NYC but only go over a few times a year and that is one of the things I had planned for my next visit. Not a big deal but if we would be close, that may be fun. It's only a few miles from Oscilloscope, not sure if that is on your list.

All 3 airports are about the same distance from manhattan. If you have a choice, also the prices are a little better to fly into Newark Nj. It's less congested and you have your choice of public transportation right into the city. When there are Yankee games or things going on at the Garden, the traffic is horrible. Could take you 30 minutes to go 4 blocks. On the weekends the traffic is considerably better than weekdays.

So glad you can come!

No time and place yet...I am thinking 9am...just to leave lots of time to rest up for the party. I will hopefully wrap up the finishing touches on the tour in the next couple days and then will share with all.

If there are any must see spots that anyone has please let me know.

Thanks, Jason. And thanks again for organizing all of this! Please PM me if there's anything I can help with.

Has anyone let Adam H., Mike D, et al. know about this shindig? I thought it was so awesome how Adrock showed up to MCA Day, and he seemed really touched by it; just thinking we might want to let them know about this event, if only to share how much they all mean to us.

Hi there! I'm pretty new to the BBMB and I don't really post a lot. I'm more of a lurker. But I really enjoy reading all of your comments and banter - and I decided to head to New York for the August 4 Beastivities! My boyfriend and I will be driving up the evening of Aug. 3 from DC. We have our hotel room booked, and it's only blocks away (stumbling distance, you might say) from the Overlook! I'm anxious to hear the details of the walking/subway tour. So excited! See you all there!

If anyone plans on doing a little site seeing on their own, there is a city pass. We have done this before and you really get your moneys worth and then some. You pay one price for a one or two... day pass and it will get you into over 70 attractions. I just saw a comercial on tv that said the sale price of these ends tomorrow. Just an FYI if anyone is interested, here is the web site :)

Hi everybody!

Just wanted to jump in here and spread the word for the NYC local peeps about a project that is COINCIDING with Jason's 8/4 Celebration!

I would like to invite you all to be a part of this larger-scale project!

For the walking tour Jason has assembled on 8/4 I will be doing a photography project and I need FANS to take part of it!

FANS: Wear your freshest gear and bring your meanest mean mugs because I’m going to be documenting the landmarks as they stand for the Beastie Fanthology Project (http://keepitonandon.com/), but the BEST part is – I want YOU – the FANS – to be IN the photos. We are doing this Yauch-art style. Word.

Are you HEARING what I’m saying?

We’re going to do Beastie-inspired photos.

That means I want you to pull out your best poses and be extra fresh. Bring your kids, your boys, your girls, whoever your crew is, make sure they are with you. Style it up. This is a once-in-a-lifetime thing. You love the Beasties? I mean REALLY love the Beasties?

SHUT UP AND SHOW ME.

After the walking tour I will also be heading to the Overlook Bar for some good times and erm… refreshments. If we can’t connect until that evening I will still be snapping at the Overlook, so don’t get too bummed out if you can’t make the walking tour. We will get you in the pics.

Also – if you want your photos to make it into the Fanthology book, you’ll just need to sign a consent form, which I will have with me on August 4th.

After everything is wrapped, the images will go on the Keep It On and On Facebook page as well as on this blog and you can tag and share away.

We can all own a bit of B-Boy history forever. It’s my little gift to you.

Visit the BLOG (http://keepitonandon.com/special-announcement-august-4-2012-beastie-fan-celebration-in-nyc/) for the full info. Let's do this people!!!

Follow me on twitter at @keepitonandon (http://www.twitter.com/keepitonandon) for updates! Would love to meet you all!

OK Jason, et al.

I LOVE what you have planned and I can’t tell you how awesome I think this idea is!

You know I am in Sydney, and I can’t make it over there for the Birthday Extravaganza.

There’s nowhere I’d rather be, but it’s not gonna happen. :(

However, I had to think of SOME way I could be with y’all in spirit.

So I came up with a CUNNING PLAN.

Here is the link: http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=209990132460825&set=o.289164961172690&type=1&theater – read Lisa’s description and the comments underneath; it’ll explain the whole plan!

(yes, each sticker is unique and features a different lyric…………)

If you hate the idea; NO WORRIES. It’s YOUR weekend. No pressure. :)

If you love it the idea, you can contact Lisa (our girl on the ground in Brooklyn)
-via Twitter: https://twitter.com/BeastieBoys1
-or Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/InspiredByTheBeastieBoys
-or email (contact me pwr2mca@gmail.com ……I don’t want to publish her email here!)

Thankyou to Lisa Lisa Full Force Routine for making this happen! <3

I hope you all HAVE A BALL next weekend! (And thankyou to EVERYONE who’s promised to take photos, so those of us who can’t make it can at least experience it vicariously through YOU all!!!!!!!!!!!!!)

xoxoSarah

Disclaimer:

……you’re under no pressure to do this. It's possible that what I’m suggesting would put you on the wrong side of NYC anti-vandalism laws.

I agree!! Great idea! Like so may people, I want to go but I am hityting obstacles. I live in Boston (but I am a Southern Girly through and through) and since I am so new to the area, I just can't find anyone that will go with me. I'm not so comfortable going all alone since I don't know anyone attending. I am new to the boards - thanks to MsPacMan for showing me the way via twitter.

I would like to think this is just the beginning of many BB fan gatherings but I still have that awful feeling in the pit of my stomach that tells me I am missing EVERYTHING!!!

Anyone else going solo from Boston and may want to consider riding together? Just a thought...no serial killers, please!

great to see press but it would seem weird to have random strangers that weren't involved in this thing from the get go. the more the merrier and a good cause, I guess.

the gothamist is kind of claiming their map had something to do with this, as well.

that being said, have fun and if there is more to do, hit up the Globe at the World's Fair in Queens and Murray's Cheese Shop in the Village for me, I'll be Honeymooning in Central California.

I kinda thought that too and hopefully it can stay more on the intimate side. That city can sometimes get a little crazy with public events, especially when they stick the word "free" in there.

Congratulations YR! That is wonderful. Wishing you a world of happiness :)

I will cosign the above posts. I know I'm revered as the supreme party pooper around these parts lately but when I saw those links I immediately thought, damn, glad I didn't spring for this. I have a bad feeling it's going to blow up now and become "unmanageable," for lack of a better term. The more the merrier, I guess, but with the publicity now and the addition to be whole photography shindig I hope you don't get a bunch of biters showing up. It would really suck to ask someone "what's your handle on the message board," and have them look at you like WTF and try to show you a modeling portfolio. ;)

I hope it all goes well in the end. Kudos to Jason for organizing. Overlook is probably happy as hell.

I'm not really concerned. We had a ton of blogs (including Gothamist) pick up the MCA Day story, and it was still an intimate gathering.

We have 80-something people RSVP'ed on Facebook, and as a general event-planning rule, we estimate that about half of that will actually show up.

I really don't think we will be overwhelmed, but I'm glad the word got out because there were so many folks who didn't know about MCA DAY who really genuinely wanted to be there.

If you're heading down, we'll be happy to have you. Come say hi. :)

115 people at my last check. Plus, I'm sure there are people who are planning on coming to the events, but like to maintain some level of privacy and thus aren't RSVPing on Facebook. Like me, for example...I'm kinda old-fashioned that way. :)

I hate MTV but they have always supported the Beasties. I am sure if Adam had lived they would have been involved.... the same way they were in the past. I can only imagine now how that would have been, might have been.

So yeah the fact that media picked this up doesn’t surprise me. This fan-base is strong and is dedicated to these three guys. I think we’ll always get attention no matter what we do. I hope we keep this up for Adam, Mike and Adam.

Like MTV or hate them a lot of organizations pay big bucks to have their stuff promoted by big media such as MTV. I've just never seen anything like this based purely on an altruistic gesture from a few fans. Today it is really easy for anyone to promote anything on a blog. So I agree about the getting attention no matter what. I think you are 100% correct in saying that the fan base here is a strong one. That is why I believe big media outlets are latching on to what is and has been done here for these guys we love and support. Knowing that we DON'T expect anything from these guys in return says a whole lot. :)

I just wish the official message board got more credit for organizing this thing. I have always been a proud member of this community and for all the "non activity" to come out of here during hiatus, there have been so many fan led, and band led, movements that produced DIY type of activities like this one...

the original call for AIFST shooters being the huge example that gave many fans like myself an experience and opportunity to interact with the band that they will never forget.

it was forged right here on the boards.

that is the #1 reason I am grateful for this community, message board, and Adam Yauch, respectfully.

that and all the great friendships, marriages, and bbmb babies.

Uhm sorry guys. I just meant had Adam lived and the band was able to tour, do shows etc... then I think MTV might have done some cool stuff to coincide with all things Hot Sauce. Uh yeah that's all I meant.... but you know I don't make much sense these days.

Oh yeah and I just watched this. ;)

Oh yeah and YoungRemy I agree. Every time I think of any of these projects/events I always think of the message board. I usually link here too.

The initial reason this was created was for fans of the message board. This has been the only fan community that I was even aware of until recently. My intentions where to get members of the boards to come together for what I thought was one last time as I believed that we may not exist as a community much longer..I now realize I was really wrong about that.

This blowing up the way it has is really unintended. Still, the most important part of the weekend for me will be to meet members from the boards who I have been reading their posts for years. Not sure how many of those people are coming out...but I know there is a few.

As a Beastie Boys fan, I have always relied on these boards for information...news always breaks here first and I have always appreciated that. I too am a proud member and I will do my best to let it be known this weekend. :)

Jason, thanks again for putting this all together. I think a lot of us have needed a Beastie celebration...I know I do. I'm psyched.

Whatever the outcome of all the press the event is now getting, it has been cool to see your name out there in "print," because you've put so much into planning this. I know I speak for a lot of us when I say that we really appreciate it! Gratitude. (y) And see y'all tomorrow!

Agreed.

Whatever happens, Jase - you deserve only praise.

I hope you know that we realise the amount of effort this has taken. Thankyou for stepping up and taking all of it on. You've done a sensational job.

<3

Throughout the weekend, please remember I'm only an email away. If you need help with something - contact me any time (you might need someone to update this thread, or answer emails for you, or deal with Facebook messages. You might find you don't have time to deal with fiddly things while you're on the road.) I'll help you any way I can. Don't be afraid to ask!

WISH I WAS WITH YOU GUYS TOMORROW!

I will be cooking The Frugal Yauch's pesto pasta in preparation for the great birthday gala event!

Much love to all the peeps (and the freaks) in Beastiefanland!

Thank You!

Good point too...I strongly suggest anyone who can't make it to find a way to celebrate. Imagine the positive vibes that could be unleashed into the universe. :)

I just wanted to say something. I felt the need to say what I did below because I felt BBMB members were feeling slighted as this idea was developed on here first but got a lot of attention elsewhere and didn't credit the boards. Something I observed though is that fans are fans, those from the message board don't differ a whole lot from those that simply love the band and don't post about it on the internets. I now look at this place as more of a venue to express your feelings about the band and their music, but the Beastie Boys fan community stretches so much wider than just this message board.

Just felt the need to say this. Onward.

You never know until it actually happens. Although I was optimistic...awesome people and beastie boys music are sure fire ingredients for a successful party.

If we do this thing next year are you going to make the trip?
