The Beastie Boys had millions of fans, even including some politicians in the New York State Senate.
According to a press release (http://www.nysenate.gov/press-release/squadron-resolution-honors-adam-mca-yauch), State Senator Daniel Squadron honored late rapper Adam "MCA" Yauch by passing a resolution Thursday on the Senate floor. The resolution, J4637-2011, recognizes the Brooklyn native's cultural contributions to the state, noting that he "exemplified New York" and helped rejuvenate (http://www.syracuse.com/news/index.ssf/2012/05/adam_yauch_ny_state_senate_resolution_beastie_boys _mca.html#) New York City.
Yauch, who went by MCA in the hip-hop group and also as Nathaniel Hornblower when directing films and music videos, died May 4 (http://blog.syracuse.com/entertainment/2012/05/beastie_boys_rapper_adam_yauch.html) after a long battle with salivary gland cancer. He co-founded the Beastie Boys in 1979 with lifelong friends Adam "Ad-Rock" Horovitz and Michael "Mike D" Diamond, winning (http://www.syracuse.com/news/index.ssf/2012/05/adam_yauch_ny_state_senate_resolution_beastie_boys _mca.html#) three Grammys and being inducted into the 2012 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
When news (http://www.syracuse.com/news/index.ssf/2012/05/adam_yauch_ny_state_senate_resolution_beastie_boys _mca.html#) of Yauch's death broke that day, several New York politicians mourned the loss on Twitter.

Yauch, the gravelly voiced rapper who co-founded the seminal hip-hop group, died at age 47 after being diagnosed with a cancerous parotid gland in 2009.
"Sad day for so many New Yorkers & music fans everywhere. My heart & prayers go out to Adam Yauch's family & everyone who loved him," Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (https://twitter.com/SenGillibrand/statuses/198486837155729408)tweeted.
Sen. Charles Schumer (https://twitter.com/ChuckSchumer/statuses/198475116789772290) shared his own rhymes: "Born and Bred in Brooklyn, U.S.A., they call him Adam Yauch, but he's M.C.A. RIP Adam. #beastieboys #nosleeptillbrooklyn"
"Thanks to artists like him #RIPMCA // RT @BenjySarlin: MCA a timely reminder that New York is more awesome than everywhere else," New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg (https://twitter.com/MikeBloomberg/statuses/198487065237782528) posted.
The resolution doesn't mandate a statewide MCA Day, Spin magazine (http://www.spin.com/articles/adam-mca-yauch-honored-ny-state-senate-resolution) noted, but allowed the NY State Senate to "pause" its deliberations and was ceremonially accepted on the congressional floor.
Squadron, who represents Yauch's birthplace of Brooklyn Heights, included references to their songs in the resolution (http://open.nysenate.gov/legislation/api/1.0/html/bill/J4637-2011), which reads in part:
"Whereas, the music and message of the Beastie Boys evolved over the years, but they can't, won't, don't stop changing the face of hip-hop, of music, and of our culture. Whereas, the Beastie Boys exemplified New York through a period in which grassroots creativity and a community of iconoclastic artists helped redefine and rejuvenate a city on the ropes, with iconic imagery from Brooklyn to Ludlow Street...
Whereas, a man of colossal talent and charisma, Adam Yauch is survived by his wife, Dechen Wengdu, and their daughter, Losel; he will be missed by his family, his fans and all who knew him; his dedication to his music, his activism, and his heritage leaves an indelible legacy of inspiration for all other artists; now, therefore, be it resolved that this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to mourn the death of famed rapper and activist Adam 'MCA' Yauch; and be it further resolved that a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be transmitted to the family of Adam Yauch.
Though a holiday hasn't been officially created, Beastie Boys fans are holding an MCA Day (https://www.facebook.com/MCADAYNYC) celebration on Saturday at 11 a.m. in New York City's Union Square. Attendees are invited to wear their best Beasties shirt, and share memories and favorite song lyrics.
