View Full Version : Coping With Loss
Well, it's been 2 weeks since the world lost Adam Yauch. We are still here, trying to cope and we'll never forget him. I have noticed that a lot of us fans have been having trouble dealing with this huge loss (myself included) so I wanted to post some of my favorite albums that helped get me through the roughest patches of my life (loss of family members, 9/11, etc).
I hope that whoever reads this will share some of their favorite songs or albums that helped get them through tough times.
Coldplay - Parachutes Hate all you want but I think this album is great. Favorites are "Don't Panic" and "Everything's Not Lost." This helped me cope through the 9/11 tragedy as well as the death of my older brother in 2004.
Rancid - Indestructable This one also helped me deal with loss. So many great tracks that just make me feel better. "If I fall back down, you're gonna help me back up again..." I didn't know that Rancid played at Yauch's wedding. Makes it even more personal now.
Crowded House - Time on Earth I am a huge Crowded House fan, saw them at the Beacon back in the day. A bunch of great songs here. This album deals with loss, particularly the loss of a band member, Paul Hester. "She Called Up" is about when Hester's wife called Neil Finn to break the news:
"And truth is a mortal blow
Well, you know all there is to know
Well, the hurt that you have so close
Is something better now..."
Honorable Mention:
Abbey Road - The Beatles I played this CD on the drive from Manhattan to Long Island the day my dad passed away in 2002; he was a huge Beatles fan and probably the reason I love music so much. It makes me smile when I hear it today.
I hope this helps fellow Beastie fans. Be well.

You know I've been so consumed with listening to the BBoys that I hadn't been listening to my old sad songs that help me cope. The first one that popped in my head is Still in Your Heart by Power Station. I just listened to it and it's so perfect. I can't put into words how it helps but it does. Damn now I miss Robert Palmer too!

Tool - Lateralus. It always seems to fit along with whatever mood I'm in. That and it's my favorite album of theirs.
Pink Floyd - The Wall. It just makes me happy.
Tori Amos - Under The Pink. When I feel like dwelling on my sadness I listen to this. Then I can pick up and move on. I've come back to this album many times in my life.
Nine Inch Nails - Pretty Hate Machine. It helps me when I'm really pissed off.

I always liked Crowded House. Nice song choices guys. Love Tori too, but for me I need upbeat loud music to get me through it. As a long time Garbage fan I can say their new album "Not Your Kind Of People" has been keeping me sane. It's noisy and dark and heavy with a lot of drums and guitars and bass. Absolutely love it. Thank you Shirley, Duke, Steve and Butch. (y)
I still haven't been able to spin any bboys. Selfish of me? Maybe, as I am sure they want their fans to embrace the music. I know it's helping many of you right now, but I almost did it last week in my car. I had my ipod plugged in and I was like you know I am going to just blast some Hot Sauce. But then I started crying even before I put it on....becaause I was thinking about Yauch's opening line in Long Burn and how last year I envisioned that when he got well he'd come up on that stage and just open the show with it....totally cancer free and on fire. I just can't put them on. :(

It's an amazing album. Very alternative and true to their roots. I miss bands like them from the 90's.......Garbage also posted a memorial message for Adam and the Beasties on their twitter/facebook which was really nice to see. He's impacted so many.

Tons of songs for me. When I lost my father, the first song I heard leaving the hospital was "Stairway to Heaven." I also think of him with Lynyrd Skynyrd's "Simple Man" and Bob Dylan's "Blowin' In the Wind."
With other loss through the years...
"Wave Goodbye" Chris Cornell
"Everyday" Richard Ashcroft
"Over Now" Alice In Chains
"Satisfied Mind" Jeff Buckley
I don't tend to listen to full albums as a way to cope. I make playlists as it pertains to the individual. If I want some positivity, I'll toss in Days of the News' green album or Richard Ashcroft.
And the Beastie Boys, of course :)

I've been listening to Van Morrison's greatest hits album. Although I'm not a particularly religious person, there is a certain inspiring beauty to the spiritual songs he sings, and he doesn't shove it down your throat too much. My favorites are: "Full Force Gale," "And It Stoned Me," "Bright Side Of The Road," "Sweet Thing," "Warm Love," and "Cleaning Windows." Also, his album "Down The Road" is really great, too, with songs like "Steal My Heart Away," "The Beauty of the Days Gone By," and "Man Has To Struggle." (y)
