FLO MASTER

everything! I know everyone has their own little stories but mine was unique, to me at least.
Mid November, 1986, a neighbored friend of mine, Jason, introduced me to another friend, rich. they asked if I wanted to be in their group. I didn't know what he was talking about but they said they were forming a group, after the beastie boys. I replied "who the fuck are the beastie boys?" Jason replied "they're a new white rap group with awesome rhymes!" I replied "sure, why not? I have nothing else better to do!" we dressed and tried acting like the beasties, trying to get every detail we could about them and watch their videos. I was "MCK", Rich was "RICH A" and Jason, "the king j-rock". we then came up with our own name, "the guinea pigs". (We were all Italian!) we took all the beastie songs and changed their lyrics to suit our lifestyles. we performed at local parties, roller rinks and amateur nights at local clubs. the beasties influenced out daily lives. there wasn't a thing we didn't do that they rapped about in their songs. to us, the beasties were our "masters". we went around, stealing vw symbols then switching gears to Cadillac symbols to relate to our new group.
the only thing I felt that I had in common with the beasties was that I was born in NYC, not long island. one day, while waiting at tower records in 84 for lollapalooza tickets, I met a younger group of grunge kids, of course, I didn't fit it with them but we did have the beasties as our favorite group. One of the girls had told me she had met the beasties. I asked her "how?" and she told me that her doctor was the beasties doctor. I jokingly called her a "liar" but I thought to myself "what are the chances that she is telling the truth?" I saw her a year later, while working at a beach down the block from me. this time, she bought her autographs a pictures. I was in shock. she told me her doctor told her where to meet them. I begged her to tell me who her doctor was and she swore up and down she wouldn't tell me.
later that summer, I caught poison ivy. My mother told me to go to her doctor. now, I hated going to the doctors. always have. so, I went. I sat on the table and the doc was in his late 70's. he started asking about my mother and other things. he then started asking what music I listened to. I thought he was just continuing with his small talk so I replied "I listen to freestyle (80's dance) but I'm a big fan of the beastie boys" (forgetting I was wearing a beastie boys CYH hat).
he then replies "the beastie boys? oh, theyre patients of mine." my mouth dropped!!! I had finally found the beastie boys doctor...in massapequa!
my friend, rich a, now works at MSG and he kept telling me he couldn't wait for the beasties to come to the garden. he is head engineer of the ac in MSG. but alas, his dreams were shattered. he went to bb kings that night to drown his sorrows. he texted me at 4am in the morning. they were doing "karaoke" night and he did some beasties songs. his text said "lets get the band back together!" this would be the ultimate tribute to the beastie boys.
RIP ADAM.....
