This may be really stupid to bring up but i keep thinking of Adam and how he could have got cancer and i keep thinking about how much he chewed gum..and sugar free gum specifically. I know he chewed Trident for awhile. I wonder if there is any connection. Makes you wonder.

I agree, I've always thought of this as a stupid connection.

After something like this it's natural to ask 'why?' though, so I understand.

EDIT: Sorry, not to diss. I really get that people want to know why. Plainly said, there doesn't appear to be any reason. The equally sad and infuriating thing is there is simply no way to know for sure. The universe is just random, and not even MCA was immune to that.

Are we all on the same wavelength. I was going to comment in that other thread about this when Fonky said Adam told her he was losing his voice. ??? I googled about it and of course some doctors have theories that it does...

Around when did people really start noticing his gum chewing? I remember him saying it helped his voice but thought he was kidding when he said that. :/

I thought that he chewed alot of gum BECAUSE he had cancer and had to keep his mouth moist.

I currently knock back a pack of orbit peppermint gum a day. Pretty much chew all day from 8am to 6pm!! All these posts have made me cringe to even pop a piece in.

Certainly not, and I saw that in the wikipedia entry and cringed.

He's been chewing gum since the earliest days. You can see him doing it in all the vids from the LTI era.

He could have just been losing his voice on that day. It could be any day. People lose their voices. And he chewed gum for years. None of it means anything.

I hope I don't inspire angry messages, but my wish for all of your wellbeing is that you guys can move past this, becuase these questions are kind of hysterical (at the very least based in hindsight which is always 20/20) and aren't going to help you heal. Especially when none of us are experts. Again, and I really can't state this enough, I understand the need to wonder, though. :)

You're right. Honestly I stated before that we will never know what really caused it. I am fine with that. Whether we know what happened or not won't change the fact that he's gone.

Its not gum chewing. Its just really fucking horrible luck, which is the cause of the vast majority of most cancers. It fucking SUCKS beyond sucking but it is what it is.

It does suck and he is on my mind daily. I can't help but think these random thoughts. We will never truly know why him except for shit luck.

I on the other hand think that it is good to talk about things like this.

As far the public record shows, Adam had gone completely abstinent by 1994. I mean yeah, maybe by some horrible luck his early usage mutated his tissue to allow for cancerous growth in his later years, but I'd say that the improbabilty of that is high.

Then again, the kind of cancer that he got was a really rare form anyways... It just fucking sucks no matter how you slice it. Part of moving forward from the grief of losing Adam will be accepting completely that Adam just... well, he just got punked the fuck out by fate, you know?

I agree.

This whole situation is shitty, I just hope people don't start conspiracy theories to deal with the pain. Sometimes things just don't make sense. Life throws a lot of punches.

I'm not trying to police conversations by any chance, I'm just saying, really dont think gum chewing can cause that kind of cancer.

You all, there are a million things that could have caused his cancer and if we over think them all, we will drive ourselves crazy. It's because we miss him so much and want to make sense of it all. If he would have been hit by a car in Brooklyn, we would be sitting here picking apart why he was hit by a car in Brooklyn.

Death will take us all...some sooner rather than later. It took MCA sooner than we, and I imagine he, would have liked it to, but we cannot let it rule us.

I, for one, am going to happily chew the shit out of my gum and not give a f--- about it!

How has this thread now become an anti gum chewing thread? c'mon now!
:)

I wasn't building up theories on the other thread, just remembering...and that one detail hit me, so i shared it on here. the voice thing is just a in-flint information, but you know, when you are dealing with a genius like him, you can read the events back and forward and there you go.....information.

A Year and a Day, genius.......power!!!!

No I will still chew gum. Even if it was the gum I believe everybody's fate is different. Some people smoke all their lives and never get cancer. :/

Now WIKIPEDIA is smoking crack..... Whoever updated the page seems to think Yauch was seen chewing gum only after his diagnosis.

In 2009, Yauch was diagnosed and treated for a cancerous parotid gland (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parotid_cancer) and a lymph node and underwent surgery and radiation therapy, delaying the release of Hot Sauce Committee Part Two (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hot_Sauce_Committee_Part_Two) and the subsequent tour.[22] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adam_Yauch#cite_note-21)[23] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adam_Yauch#cite_note-22) He was unable to appear in music videos for the album. Yauch can be seen chewing gum in almost all of his performances after his diagnosis, the gum was used to help with his moisture and mouth issues.[9] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adam_Yauch#cite_note-time-8)[14] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adam_Yauch#cite_note-newsday-13) Yauch became a vegan (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vegan) under the recommendation of his Tibetan doctors.[24] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adam_Yauch#cite_note-23) At the time, Yauch described the cancer as "very treatable".[25] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adam_Yauch#cite_note-24)

My only thought about this and I know nothing about nothing when it comes to cancer, but...

Baseball players chew gumb all the time and chew and you don't hear abou them having this sort of cancer. But again I know nothing about nothing.

I think it was an unfortunate "short straw" so to say. I lost a good friend last year to mouth and throat cancer. I racked and racked my brain trying to figure what the hell caused it. She didn't smoke, she didn't drink. She ate well - she just never abused her body. I pulled ideas out of everywhere I could think of, settling somewhat uneasily on years of asthma inhaler use (something I use as well). Who knows if I was right or wrong though and I guess it doesn't matter in the end. I finally had to resolve within myself that I will never know the answer.

The only consideration with gum is the nasty artificial sugar and while Yauch chewed a lot of gum, I think it takes astronomical amounts of gum to even consider cancer. Alas, I'm not an oncologist or researcher, just someone racking my brain like everyone else here. I personally can't chew gum because I have TMJ syndrome.

I would tend to wonder more about exposure to radiation, ala dental work, etc.

I always considered the gum chewing thing to be a 'genius' thing.

Lennon did it too.

How can you play an instrument, sing, and chew gum at the same time, proficiently?

I think Cobain chewed gum when performing too. And then there is Michael Jordon during his time with Chicago.

He may have only chewed gum during performances as a nervous thing? Y'know to stop himself from looking/feeling tense?
Millions of people chew gum all day long and they don't get a cancer in that area, so it is probably not a factor.

Well Adam said in a live interview that the gum helped his voice. He said spearmint was the best and helped his vocals. This was around 2006 promoting AIFST at Sundance.

Well then it must have helped keep his vocal chords moist for rapping. I need to sip tea or coffee constantly when I am doing a lot of talking at work. If i don't have my hot drink i get all croaky. :)

I know people who use their voice alot utilize tools like gum, honey, lemon, tea, etc., to soothe the throat and vocal chords. Yauch drank a lot of tea as well, so I imagine he was aware of this. I have heard from a few professional opera singers that the gum has to be "minty" and sugar-free. It's preferable to chew it before a performance. Interesting. Drinking a cold beverage is a big no-no.
