View Full Version : Adrock looking to rename park 'Adam Yauch Park'

Just read this from Kathleen Hanna on a Facebook page for naming another park after Yauch (Squibb Park in Brooklyn Heights)

"I tried to write this before but it looks like it didn't work. I just wanted to let you know that Adam "Adrock" Horovitz has already begun working with the Parks Commissioner to fix up and rename State Street Park where Yauch actually played as a kid to 'Adam Yauch Park'. It would be great to get people behind THIS idea as it won't hurt the Squib family and it would be awesome to fix up the bball court there as a tribute....Thanks, Kathleen Hanna (Adrock's wife)"

Would be cool if it were done by the time we have the fan gathering. I say we should still put this place on our list of Beastie spots to visit though!

@KingPsyz Right! Well whatever Jason decides but either way it is going to be a special place for Beastie fans. ;)

Frank, yes i am going.

Mike D might be handling his grieving differently. I hope he is ok too.

so it's State Street now instead of Squibb?

it looks like the entire community of Brooklyn Heights is angling for one while Adam H and Parks and Rec are working on another.

JoLovesMCA
05-22-2012, 05:15 PM
Ok I am confused. Are there two parks?

New YAUCHERS help!??

YoungRemy

yes. two parks. Kathleen is trying to get people on board Adam's plan instead of the Brooklyn Heights community organizers.

both are good intentions, but it looks like Adam H is working directly with the city while the Squibb is just an idea/petition.

but folks like Cey Adams are sharing the Squibb updates and it looks like Kathleen is trying to clear the air.

that's what it looks like to me.

awesome -- looks like they are talking about "palmetto playground" near the end of state street at columbia street -- not named after any historic figures or people.

He's always been private. Just because he's not out and about doesn't mean he's not dealing. He'll be fine, and obviously we can only wish him the best during this time.

Well now it will be! ;)

Oh so I don't know what to do about the Squibb thing, seems like they are still going ahead with their plan... Hmmm kinda like a sticky situation now. Of course I will back up what Adrock is doing. he'll make it happen!

their effort is just a grassroots blog campaign/petetition/facebook page

their response to the new update:
Thanks for covering this story. Ms. Hanna has reached out to us and we are awaiting official confirmation of this effort. Once that's done, the Brooklyn Heights Blog community will enthusiastically suppor the State Street initiative.

In the meantime, please keep "liking" the Facebook page as well as supporting the movement

Did you hear that? Ms. Hanna has reached out to us. She's such a huge part of this. Seriously I am such a big fan of her's too....so forgive me but I get giddy over anything she does the way I do the Beasties. ;)

Anyway thanks for the updates on that, so now we'll just wait for what Horovitz/Hanna are going to announce which is pretty exciting. (y)

Awesome. Im so happy. He so deserves a park to be named after him and bball was his favorite.

Yauch Park... Love it.

Hope its done and dedicated on his Birthday!!!!!!!! Woud be so great to be there for the dedication.

Mike D is in LA... Out of reach. Adrock was closer to Adam these past few years. Im so happy he is doing this with Kathleen.

Thats beautiful.

I really hope it works
Makes me even more sad I wont be able to see it.
I want to go to NY so badly, Im completely restricted from it.
I'm devastated completely that i'll never make it out there, truly 100% crushed by it. It bothers me every day.

I REALLY hope this works out, it would make me SO happy.

How are you completely restricted from the City? Even if you're a kid there will come a time when you can go anywhere....

If you're not a kid, don't limit yourself to where you can and cannot go. That's not living...there's always a way to get somewhere.(y)

i believe it is. On the Facebook page for the original idea on Squibb, they put a map of the State Street park and this is it.

I have mapped it for my trip to the City this weekend.

On a side note, wouldn't it be the shit when this park is Adam Yauch Park that they put a little meditation / buddhist type area to honor his faith and where people could go to think of him?

I'm 19 as of this past march.
I mean, I'm not trying to limit myself Its just difficult when you're broke and transportationless. Seizing the day is what being young is all about!

I job searched all day yesterday for hours to get one where I can save and get out there I just mean I'd probably miss the reopening of the park with the new name which would be very special to see.

It's fact one day I'll get there, I just wish it would come sooner.

Maybe a few of my pals would be down for a road trip later this summer if everyone was able to pitch in a good amount
I just really want it to happen asap.

So difficult being flat broke and carless and jobless after putting so much effort into trying to find a job in my town and getting no luck at all.
My dream is to see NY.

yeah that's the park i think too. awesome idea about a meditation area, there is an area i think that would be perfect for that -- close to the entrance gate from state st. for some reason that park feels so appropriate for yauch, it feels urban yet peaceful, and the bball connection is perfect. and it would be the perfect spot to drink a beer after the atlantic antic.

A shrine? Ha! I love that!

The Squibb Park fb page have already shifted their agenda and are now backing up Adrock and Hanna so no more confusion about that!

LOL...I didn't say shrine because of all the fangirl connotations that go along with it...just a small place to sit and be still....think of the man and honor his memory.

Jo, we can have our own shrines, Helga Pataki style...LOL.

Hey what's wrong with fangirls???!!!!!!!!! And part of its meaning is A place of religious devotion or commemoration...... so i am down with the meditation!

Updates ya'll!!!!!!!!!! ;)

The S.E.M. Ensemble has been performing experimental and modern music for over 40 years. This evening S.E.M. Ensemble tweeted that Palmetto Playground, the city park along State St & Columbia Place in Brooklyn Heights has been renamed Adam Yauch Playground.

The renaming effort was initiated by AdRock, his wife, and various Beastie Boys fans last May (http://brooklynheightsblog.com/archives/40974), soon after Yauch's death from cancer. Yauch played hoops at the playground as kid.

This was supposed to be a feelgood post, but I've barely finished it, and it's kind of bummed me the hell out.
