I've been jocking out more in my life lately.

I just started attending Kettlebell classes at the local ymca, and I have never done anything so hard in my life. The classes are only 30 minutes long, but I leave them swimming in sweat and so out of breath as if I spent the whole time running.
Your body will hate you after the first few classes, but now I'm 5 weeks in and I have never felt so reengerized after a work-out.

I also started playing "organized" sports again after a looooong hiatus.

I'm on a soccer-baseball team (whooo!) and somehow got roped into joining an ultimate frisbee team with my husband because one of his co-workers said they were short players.
I went to the first practice last night and I thought I was going to die. I showed up thinking "I throw and catch alright, this should be fine"
Little did i know the entire game is mostly about being able to sprint and change directions in an instant like a goddamn gazelle.
needless to say, I felt out of my element and am actually going to have to do a bit of endurance training on my own time so that I don't keel over at actual games.
It doesn't help that the male to female ratio is 6:1 and most of said dudes are almost a decade younger than me :( :(

I also tried joining a volleyball team this summer (my first love) but sadly I signed up too late and there were no spots left.

What do you do to express your inner jocky self?

Recently I've been getting into Running.

Started out just jogging at the gym on the treadmill to try to lose weight and advanced into running outdoors and for further distances when I signed up for a 7mile mud run. Much better workout and more interesting than the treadmill.

Next up is the half marathon.
I have learned I need a goal, like an upcoming race to help keep me motivated. Once I pay money to enter something, I feel obligated to prepare for it so I don't embaress myself in front of the people I'm running with.So I'm just going to try to keep signing up for a race every couple of months to keep me going.

I love to golf. I don't know why, but last summer I must have gone out about 30 times with my friends and my dad. I'm getting better but I'm not great at it. I just like to go out and be inside nature. It's peaceful.

I also am getting in to hiking a little bit. Lots of little trails here or there to explore. It's a big step for me because normally I hate bugs and trails and stuff like that, but I'm really enjoying it. I like to imagine I'm in Jurassic Park or something, which is both terrifying and exciting. I have a child's imagination even now, haha.

I'd like to get back into street hockey, but not until I drop some lbs, I'd like to play goal. Maybe I'll also try soccer this summer. I can't wait for Euro!!!

I really don’t care alot for gym workouts, gym culture or square head, jeep driving jocks...I prefer to play to get my excersise...We play league footy every Monday night for the next 3 months, supplemented by pickup basketball and weekend trail rides...but by far the bestest is that Summer means it’s time to climb... I love tennis (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MB2f6-U72Zk)!

My husband and I both received brand new ball gloves from my dad for Christmas, so now we like going out and playing catch once in awhile.
I used to play beer league softball but I never got into it because I grew up playing boys hardball and I hate how big and stupid a softball is.

I have never, ever been a runner. I feel like if I actually started I would drop 10-15 lbs instantly because it's the one thing missing from my work out routine.

I started running a few years ago and now I regularly do 10k and half marathons. Did a half marathon this Sunday and maaaan you can tell when you haven't trained. Wanted sub 2hr, I came in at 2hr18mins. At mile 4 I already knew I was gonna suck which just made me hate most of the thing. I want to do a full marathon though, looking at London 2014 - but I want a 4-4.5 hour time, I don't want to go too much beyond that which is why I am not looking at next year.

Since moving to London I've really missed the peaks (http://www.visitpeakdistrict.com/). My better half thinks I'm some sort of action man but growing up next to them I can't believe how much I took them for granted. There is snowboarding in the winter, hiking & trail running in spring & summer.

In London, I cycle everywhere. Got myself a commuter bike and that London traffic is the most dangerous sport I've ever participated in.

I’ve always had this image/idea in my head of traveling to G.B and doing one of those epic country walks...you know the kind where one would hike from hamlet to hamlet and there are little pubs along the way and an Inn to stay in at day’s end...I don’t know if these walks actually exist but I’ve heard tell of such things...

I started running last year and have been slacking a lot the last few weeks since getting married and all, but overall kept up with it. At the most I only have been doing 5ks - three of those and two mud runs in the last year, including one mud run in a tacky wedding dress with my bridesmaids. That was a blast. I definitely need a goal to train toward and am hoping to do a 10k soon, and then work up to a half marathon in the next year or so.

Otherwise, I've gotten really into Pop Physique, an intense ballet barre class. It's great and I'm way more flexible and strong, but I'm getting bored with it. I need more cardio in my life. I haven't really lost any weight doing that, whereas when I'm running 5k 3x a week the pounds melt off fast. I've been doing spin class a lot but have noticed that the stance has been wreaking some havoc on my knees and back whereas I never had problems before and that's been annoying, so I'm looking to switch it up. I have good swim gear and used to be quite the mermaid but it's still sitting brand new in my shelves :o

at any rate, I am excited to be so dedicated to being more active and am trying to drag my hubby to the gym more often too. I lost a couple pounds over the last year, especially before the wedding (but put a few back on over the honeymoon, as you do). I don't have that much to lose and know I'll never be 23 and a beanpole again but it does feel good to be active and fit, so I want to keep going with that. I want to join a team sport! That sounds so fun and motivating.

Probably can't get more 'jocky' than the MMA classes I've been doing for a while now. It's a great all over workout and I really enjoy them too.

I ride my bike 40-80 miles per week. Was supposed to go on a 90 mile ride this past weekend, but the team captain broke his elbow training two days before the trip, so we have to reschedule. I wasn't super prepared anyway, I've only been sprinting. I'm way faster and agile on the bike due to all the sprinting though, my legs are rock hard.

I hate running, but I feel like I ought to try it now that I'm fairly fit, yet still frustratingly chubby.

I'd love to join a floor hockey team. For now I've just been playing ladder golf.

They do exist. You can do it yourself or in organised groups. A popular one is the three peaks challenge (http://www.thethreepeakschallenge.co.uk/yorkshire-three-peaks-challenge/). It's on my to-do list but from others that I've read that have done, it's an excuse to just go to the pub with a larger group after walking most of the day.

There is tourists though and popular parts get crowded, but pick a weekday on a day that isn't unusually hot and you can still walk six hours without seeing a soul. And for a small crowded island that is pretty awesome. At the end of the day, no matter which village you end up you can generally always find ale. Obviously random walking isn't advisable, but I mean have a plan to end up somewhere by the end of the day. The people might be backwards but they'll be friendly.

Another jock thing I want to do is cycle London to Brighton, it's only 50 miles but I generally wouldn't do over 20 miles flat in a day and I probably only cycle about 50 miles a week at the moment so I need to train a little more for that.

I train at a boxing gym 3-4 times a week without fail. It's a hour-long circuit, and the gym is run by pro boxers. They bully people, in a practical jokes kind of way. But they're sort of mean, too. They probably took great pleasure in bullying me when I joined, such was my flabbiness.

What I eventually figured out is that they take punches for a living, so they're just trying to toughen you up. And so I persisted, which turned out to be one of the best decisions I've ever made.

The first 20-25 minutes comprise of:
Skipping
Stretches
More skipping (30 push-ups if you mess up)
Running on the spot, punching up with hand-weights (this goes on for ages, and incorporates squats, lunges, straight punches and other stuff)
Mountain Climbs
Side planks/bridge (both sides)
Front plank/bridge
Sit ups (hands over knees, hand outside knees left and right, hands between knees)
Reverse crunches
Touching toes from the sit up position (not a good description, I know - leg up in the air, 20 either leg)
Push-ups on the count of 10 (includes holding yourself up halfway, this goes on for a bit)

You have to do 10-20 push-ups between each of these. Then the circuit starts. It varies, but is usually:

Shuttle runs
Pad-work in the ring
Heavy Bag Work
Uppercut Bag Work
Floor-to-ceiling ball work
Speed-ball
Medicine Ball Sit ups
More skipping
Burpees
Incline Sit ups
Dips
Leg lifts
Squats and frog-jumps with handweights
Chin-ups
Etc Etc

Generally you do 10 push-ups after every five points on the circuit. Some days you have to do these with your thumbs touching. If they don't touch, the whole class climbs the mountain for a round. Then another 10 push-ups. The thumb rule still applies.

There are lots more options and configurations in the circuit, which is good because switching it up stops me from getting bored. I'd say on any given day you finish up doing around 300 push-ups a session.

I joined last July when my home life imploded. It was a positive lifestyle choice, when a negative one would have been much easier. I'm not ripped or overly trim (I still drink) but I feel good and I have strengthened up and trimmed down to a pleasing level so far. I'll definitely keep going.

I try to swim on my off days, but haven't done that since Autumn. Also uni made that harder to fit in.

Good times.

Serious 'bizness, what is your diet consist of? Do you drink down a half dozen raw eggs like Rocky in the morning?

Kid Presentable
05-29-2012, 10:00 PM
Nah, but it could be a bit better probably. On weekends I eat pretty much whatever I want. Weekdays I make sure I never avoid breakfast, so it's either half/half bran and Just Right, or rolled oats (not the premixed ones), or wholegrain toast and peanut butter, then like a stir-fry or something for lunch (just fuel basically) and evenings are either chicken, steak or fish, with a bunch of steamed veg. I swap out steamed veg for salad in summer.

I sometimes cook an omelette for breakfast on the weekends, just so they're not a total loss. And on occasion I fit my weekday habits in as well. It's just a lot harder for some reason.

There are still a lot of bad diet choices, though. I still eat McDonald's at some point most weeks. I smoke the occasional cigarette, too.

Like so many have already said, running on my off days would probably make all the difference.

Damn Kid P, that shit sounds intense!

I did yoga for the first time in forever tonight - only ever taken one actual class and the rest I've done from p90x dvds with my hubs - and was pretty pleased that my ballet barre class has gotten me really flexible. I can get pretty close to doing a full split! Well, not quite, but still, miles beyond where I used to be before I started. Felt great being able to do all the moves and keep my balance even though I was so nervous about doing it for the first time. Progress feels awesome (y)

I've actually been pretty impressed with yoga, myself. I haven't been doing it regularly, but I'm happy with how it relaxes me more than anything else.

About 18 months ago I was encouraged by a friend to take up refereeing for roller derby, and it now takes up most of my free time, and a lot of my not so free time. I'm going to Adelaide mid June for Australia's national tournament.

I play indoor soccer, and my team took out last seasons PREMIERSHIP TITLE for unisex division D. I have a gold coloured medallion.

I love bushwalking, and an eight day walk into the wilderness with a good friend/s is an amazing experience.

Running around 5 miles each session. Never thought I'd get my carcass to that mileage without being chased by something, like a sasquatch.

Also huge proponent of Paleo. I do a lot of body agility and HIIT training. Mov Nat style.

Hiking is my meditation as is horseback riding. I have a new horse straight off the race track. I'm hoping he'll take me up into the mountains without killing me :)

This is awesome!

I've been training with a pro-boxer too, very strict and kind of mean (in a good way) telling me I gotta do at least 500 situps a day, making me repeat the same combinations over and over and over again until I get them exactly right even though I'm cranky and exhausted, etc
I quickly came to realise that the fitness level of boxers is insane, they have strength, power, speed and endurance all in one!
He's actually told me that I have the fitness and skills to get into pro fighting (!) But I think it all depends on how I react to getting hit in the face by angry lesbians from the Bronx with cornrows (the majority of female boxers).
