I hate to admit it, but it's true. And I've been noticing it for a while. Something's got to be done to stop it and I'd like to get back down to the in shape, somewhat slightly buff looking guy I was about a year ago.

And a year ago is when it all happened. I was out exercising, biking, and I had a huge wipeout. I was going at a good clip (probably 15 - 20 miles per hour) and was thrown from my bike and cracked one of my lower vertebrae. The doc put me in a back brace and said NO working out of any kind.

SItting on my ass for 5 months, eating, and watching television were basically all I felt I could do. Old, old, old habits came back and now they don't want to go away again. I've put on an embarrassing amount of weight in a pretty short amount of time and I just can't seem to get that original motivation back that I had to lose 200+ pounds in about 1.5 years.

Every day is a new beginning though, right? So, I guess I'm starting, yet again, today.

For the record, I'm not sure why I posted this here for y'all. I just had to get it out somewhere... as is often the case with my threads here. Haha, sorry to victimize you cats. Input is welcome though. :o

New day, new hour, new moment. Thank yourself for the awareness you have about your triggers when it comes to food. Cracking a vertebrae is no joke. Recovery was no walk in the park I imagine. Now that you are better you can start anew. Don't worry about the past, you'll get to where you want to be. You've proven that you are capable already.

It's good that you've identified this at an early stage as it's a lot easier to lose 15lbs then 150!

yeah, i could hold my weight for a while but then depressions kicked in and made me stop caring for myself and i gained it all back in no time
for the last two years i had gazillion half assed diets that didnt last long...

now im back on track though, for me it works ONLY to eat (whatever) when youre hungry and stop as soon as youre sated and to walk instead of taking the bus

This is a fear of mine.

I've been shedding some weight lately too and gaining it back is a frightening thought.
It feels great to get compliments on losing weight and looking good. And I know those same people who noticed and commented on the loss will be the same people commenting behind my back if I gain it back.
It's an embarressing proposition I do not want to become reality.

Baby steps.
You obviously know what to do, you just need to start again.

I agree 100% with Randetica, walk A LOT and eat only if you're hungry...
The worst thing is starting, when you'll get used to the new habits it won't be that hard anymore
If you've made it once, you can do it again  (y)

its just getting that motivation to get started again. its not just you its hard for anyone to get back into it. but especially when you've came so far and worked so hard, then you see yourself (quite unfortunately in this instance i might add) slipping back to a place you don't want to be. you just need to know that nothings going to change unless you start busting some ass. and soon enough the results will come.

Well the key here is too make sure you snack between meals. Healthy snacks of course. If you do that you'll be less hungry and more full and energized.

I jog every morning and eat five times a day, small meals though. This includes snacks. I use to get hungry because of those damn diets. Diets don't work. Just change how you eat and splurge a little on the weekends so you don't feel deprived. Works for me.

You're so right on with Every day is a new beginning, that and "One Day at a Time" has saved my ass.. I should break that down to one hour, one minute or one second at a time. Like they say "You can start or restart your day at any time".

I can relate to this thread much more than the jock thread. I have no weight issues but the whole idea of two steps forward one step back in life is much easier to relate to than everyday getting better/healthier.

It's OK to not be perfect, to not be "all you can be" or to be something rather than what you think you should be. Just trying is good. Centering myself with humility and an idea of gratitude helps.

For humility I admit I'm a fuck up of the nth degree. (degrees may vary with different users of life)

For gratitude I focus on what I possess like my methods of perception, or sense: hearing, sight, touch, smell and taste.

From that point of view I can find a way to make things happen.

You know what? The fact that you've taken the time to think about this and write a post about it means that you're already taking steps to do something about it!

Sorry to hear about your accident, but it sounds like you've made a good recovery. I've been in a bit of similar situation in that I suddenly put on weight (say 10-14 llbs, which doesn't sound much, but that's about 10% of my total weight so it sucked) with my cystic fibrosis-shitty-lungs-story. I had to go on a high dose of steroids for a few months and I ended up looking like buddha(n). I lost a lot of muscle mass and it's been a hard slog to get back into shape.

Reasons why you can get back on track:

You're young, so your metabolism is good
You want to lose the weight.
There was a reason you fell off the wagon, so to speak, and that was due to an injury, not just because you couldn't be arsed to stay on it.

You can do it!

I really do believe that diets are useless though, as they are temporary and they dick around with your metabolism. Boring but true: changes have to be permanent. Portion control is a good one. Stick with real food, stay away from junk, yada yada, you know the drill.

Back around 2 years ago when my soon to be ex and I bought the house and I thought I was "happily" married, I just didn't give a damn about keeping in shape.

I was drinking a 30 pack on a Friday and Saturday. That means, 1 30 on a Friday and 1 30 on a Saturday.

If I had the munchies, I'd nuke up some white castles I bought from a wholesale place and customize them. I/E slapping more cheese, putting more bacon, mayo, etc.

I ended up being at 227 and I'm only 5'8".

Somehow I knew my soon to be ex wouldn't last and I also had some severe health issues.

I went from 227 to 185 just by being cautious about all of my intake. Not even exercising at all. I feel great.

I'm soon to be single and have been pimping my ass off.

sucks doesnt it? I dropped about 30 lbs last spring/summer by running. Had an injury and stopped to heal, but afterwards just kind of went with the "sitting is more fun" and gained back a significant portion of that weight :(

I'm not so much getting fat again as just plain still fat.:(

I'm working on it. A few weeks ago I did a week with no-sugar, and that was kind of an eye opener. So I'm trying for 2 weeks now. Other than that I've been calorie counting and making sure to get 8 glasses of water in each day, plus trying to go fro 8 hours sleep each night (not doing quite so well at that...) My goal is to lose about a kilo a week, but so far I've only managed about half that. But hey, I didn't get this way overnight, right?

I was going through the exact same crap- random health issue which kept me on my ass, THEN I was put on shit tons of prednisone. The oral steroid puffed me up like a damned blowfish, and before I realized it, I was 50lbs heavier. People thought I was going to shoot out twins.

And Venus is right- dieting is shit. It's hard and it makes you feel so limited in enjoying your life. I made my Doc take me off Prednisone and made a commitment to eating healthier. Not dieting, but eating the way society should in this world raging with obesity.

I drink lots of water, NO soft drinks, I make healthy meals with a small amount of carbs, lots of veggies, and a small portion of meat. I eat high protein goodies for breakfast and lunch, and I eat spinach 3 times a day (sauteed or in a salad). It gives me energy to keep me going. Sensible portions, subbing foods like frozen yogurt for ice cream and trying out healthy recipes keep me on track too. And I know you love to cook, so this could be a fun cooking adventure for you. :)

I'm now 15lbs away from what I was, and my skinny jeans will be rounding my ass in a matter of weeks. So if I can do it, I know you can.

And try myfitnesspal as LOLMOA stated. I used it for a bit and it helped. I also added a pedometer to my iphone, which told me how many calories I burned at work or while walking. Just be sure it's a pedometer, not a PEDO METER. Yeah- they make those too.

i find it good to set yourself a weight limit you shouldnt cross..i forgot to say earlier that this method doesnt work for everyone since many people dont have a feeling of satiety (anymore), im thankful that i never lost it

i heard stevia is a good alternative for sugar and sweetener, i think you americans had this thing longer than we do so you probably know more about it..that or cosmo does!

Half a kilo per week is not that bad!
Plus, that's the best way to lose weight... drastic diets make you lose more and faster but once you give up the strict regime, you'll gain back everything and more

Don't it suck? But it's so good to know it's not just "all in the mind" (*it's just water weight; your appetite's increased*) like those docs would have us believe.
Anyway, you're doing great! I'm still eyeing my skinny jeans.:(

I know it's hard to go slow but it is the best weigh. lol

Each time I go to clinic for my CF they weigh me. It's for my lungs and they're really happy with my BMI but still, it feels like going to weight watchers with marjorie dawes. (http://www.bbc.co.uk/comedy/littlebritain/characters/marjorie.shtml)

Word.
I lost a bunch of weight a while back and slowly gained every last pound back and then some.

I lost a good chunk about 2 years ago but I did something similar. I threw out my back so bad I had to stay out of work for a significant amount of time then couldn't do anything strenuous for even longer.

Not an excuse for me though. not nearly as bad as you.
Anyway, Im starting to get back into fitness. Focusing on starting one good or breaking one bad, habit at a time. Right now, it's exercise. Focusing on making that a good habit. Once I've developed that habit again, I'll break one bad habit (probably cut out something unhealthy i love to eat). And so on...

That's the strategy I am trying this time. Hopefully it will work.

you are one step ahead of a lot of people though. You know what works for you already! Just get back into those good habits, friend.

Last week my wife bet me who could lose the highest percentage of weight. Last week I lost 5.4 lbs. I started playing tennis and working out. I quit drinking soda and I am eating healthier foods in small portions. This week I want to again lose 5 lbs. My goal is to lose 25 lbs.

5 lb a week is pretty unhealthy, yo. Most dietitians will recommend no more than 2 lb/week. I'll bet that a good amount of what you lost was water. Slow and steady, bro.

Yeah the first week it's normal to lose around 5 lbs, because as Cosmo says, it's mostly water weight. It's considerably abnormal to continue at that rate unless you weigh around 600 lbs and even then it tapers after a while.

ooof SS, good luck! getting back on the fit train is a little hard but so rewarding.

i got a little chunky when i started working FT, as i sit a lot more than usual and it took a while to get myself on a decent schedule. around the same time, one of my friends also happened to gain a little weight, and we were kinda "fat buddies". My fat buddy started taking addies and lost 20 lbs in a month. i, on the other hand, started working out a little more, and ive lost about 5 lbs, but have developed a great ass and legs (A LOT of stairs). still, in my head, im less pissed that im a little chunky and more pissed that my fat buddy is way skinnier than me with significantly less work. then again, i tend to indulge a lot in regards to food (i like to eat!) and im way more inclined to exercise when i am eating well (and in turn, more likely to eat well when i exercise!) so im healthy...

argh im just jelly of my formerly fat buddy.

i tend to be lazy and don't work out as much as i would want.

but either way, you can lose weight just by eating right which is what i do. had a friend who lost 50 pounds in 6 months just by eating smart. he used to walk around like 250 and now he's more like 135 all muscles and whatnot and he never ran a mile in his life. did some walking but not much of that either.

If your "fat" buddy is much larger than you, they are probably burning more calories by hauling around more weight. Larger people tend to lose pretty quickly for a while until their metabolism gets used to what they are doing, and the weight comes down. Then they have to work harder to lose the last 20-30 lbs.

As for stairs, stair climbing is awesome! You burn more calories in less amount of time. I run up and down my stairs every morning and evening. (y)

aww thanks for making me feel better :) but im using the word fat in the most ridiculous of ways. my friend and i are both shorties, and where i have gained about 10-15 lbs to my normal frame, my friend had gained about 25. But also where I know i can look pretty good and be muscular after working out and losing about 5-10 lbs, my friend's got the type of body where she only really looks thinner if she loses a larger amount, and her "goal" is actually 35+ (where she'd actually almost be in LOW end of the normal category). it actually does come down to how we carry weight. it's laziness that makes me look/feel fat, and when im good with it, i tend to look better. aaaanyways. i just wanted to say thanks. and my small jelly moment has been replaced with a kickass feeling about my sexy tushy (oh man... stairs!)

35 pounds gone--see ya!! and only 11 more to go before I hit my 1st goal weight of 199. Then 9 more for my ultimate goal weight of 190. 55 lbs total is my goal. 6'3 190 lbs sounds good to me and I will get it done by November.

The great part is that you have lost the weight before. You know what it takes. You know that you can achieve it.

The biggest thing I see come up for people is dedication. It really is a big commitment. You can't just be willy nilly about the exercise and not change your food habits too. Being healthy and taking the time to address exercise and food habits is like a second job.

Not being dedicated enough is where people run into trouble. I never saw dedication being an issue for you the first time around. I think that means you will be just fine. (y)

really doe.

i wake up 2.5 hours early for work no matter when it is (had to work at 7 today, up at 430) to make sure i can make a good breakfast and pack a good lunch. then dedicate that 2 hours or so to the gym 5/6 days a week right after work or whenever on my days off. shop healthy, dont even bother buying junk and then you cant eat it.

being healthy is not some hop in hop out type of stuff. you need to live it.
