Time For Livin':
A Tribute to MCA & The Beastie Boys
Celebrating of the life and music of Adam Yauch
Celebrating of the life and music of Adam Yauch On July 2nd, musicians from all over the Windy City musical map will gather to pay tribute to the life and music of Adam “MCA” Yauch and the Beastie Boys. With a poster for sale designed by Scott Williams (renowned for his work for Sharon Jones & the Dap Kings and the Chicago Soul Summit) in addition to a raffle, proceeds will benefit an organization that will further Mr. Yauch's humanitarian efforts.
A one-time-only multi-media extravaganza, “Time For Livin’” will feature inspired takes on songs from throughout the Beastie Boys legendary career, from the party anthems of License to Ill, the b-boy kaleidoscope of Paul’s Boutique, to the exhilarating smash-up of live funk, hardcore, and hip-hop of Check Your Head, Ill Communication, and beyond. The event will also celebrate MCA’s wider impact through his humanitarian work to free Tibet, expose underground film with Oscilloscope Laboratories, and popularize the term “mullet” via Grand Royal Magazine, while turning everyone on to the funky jams that fueled the dreams of three MC’s from NYC...

The “Time For Livin’” event, set to take place July 2, will feature bands like The Right Now, JC Brooks And The Uptown Sound, and The Drastics. Naturally, the bands are all likely going to play some of the Beasties’ most famous ditties. And since Yauch’s life wasn’t limited to music, the event will also honor his film ventures and his work to free Tibet.

I wonder how late this is going to go. Says there is going to be 10 bands and it starts at 8PM.
I live in MI so I am about 2.5 hrs away and an hour ahead of Chicago. I would love to go to this, but I wouldn't get back until like 4AM and I don't have the money to get a hotel.
Getting too old to do that.....

That is cool that they are paying tribute. Although I have to say it is rare when an artist is able to cover a Beastie Boys song in a non-cringe worthy fashion. Coldplay's cover of FFYTP can be medically prescribed to induce vomiting.
However, there have been a lot of decent covers/tributes done by Hip Hop artists (Redman's Beet Drop comes to mind).
But it is great that people are paying tribute, regardless of the performance

All in all a first class event. Place was pretty well packed. Couldn't tell you the names of any of the acts but solid B+/A- performance by most.
It was a mix of DJ sets, playing songs of the samples, bands playing bboys instrumentals, hip hop joints, a lot of LTI, some guys did some freestyling over the instrumental songs. Couple of girls did Don't Play No Game...not too tight in my opinion, but they put their spin on it.
They brought out full brass section for slow ride and brass monkey.
In between band set ups djs played a lot of deeper cuts like 4 Fly Guys and Car Thief.
And on the big screen above the stage they played AIFST and the Criterion Collection DVDs.
The artists paid a lot of respect to Yauch and Beasties. Moment of silence and moment of noise for Yauch. All proceeds going to students for free tibet. Couple of artists shared personal stories of Yauch.
I left before the end so hopefully Bro McD or Pshabi can tell you how the story ends. And finally there was 1 poster/person limit so I was only able to get bgrrrlie.

Laver did an exceptional job of breaking it all down. Well put.
The music was much better than expected. Laver and I shared the observation of how interesting it was to see some of these beastie songs performed by stronger instrumentalists than the beasties themselves. some songs were really tight. it was also interesting to see live interpretations of songs you'd never expect to see live from even the bboys, like "song for the man", for instance. Great vibe, could feel the unity and respect for Yauch all around. The criterion and aifst screens were a great touch too.
picking up where laver left off, it feels like the horn section portion (brass monkey, slow ride) was the finale, because after that it seemed like they started playing more original cuts by the participating bands. at least it felt like that. some of the beats the bands played sounded kinda beastie-inspired, though the lyrics were no longer beastie. the bands continued to shout out the bboys as well. i left after about a half hour after Laver.
all in all, i was pleasantly surprised with the quality of the music and overall evening. An event I do not regret attending in the least. solid crowd turnout for a monday night, plus i recall some organizers saying they had upwards of 75 different musicians perform throughout the evening. that was nice too, an ever-changing cast of players and combinations onstage, so you never got really tired of any one band or lyricist. no cornball shit, aside from maybe one or two emcees who were under-prepared.
would have liked to have run into pshabi at somepoint to say what's up, but other than that I'd say it was a hit. Yauch would have been flattered. (y)

Those are excellent reviews- there's not much to add except I was also impressed by the quality of music, as well as the length of the show and number of people who attended. It really seemed to be a huge success! They kept the show moving along really well and it was just a whole lot of fun.
They did do a few more songs- the finale was "Fight For Your Right" with everyone on stage and the brass in the audience. There is a list of all the songs they performed on their facebook event page (https://www.facebook.com/events/297226303704940/): https://www.facebook.com/events/297226303704940/permalink/315102841917286/. There I is!
Sorry, I haven't been back to post in this thread. I've been off the grid, so to speak, since the night of the show. Misplaced phone, helping my bro move, and just being super busy has kept me away.
I will echo Laver's sentiments that the show was pretty well done overall and definitely respectful to Yauch. Decent crowd. I gotta apologize for barely getting to talk to Laver. I went with a friend and his wife. By the time we got to the show we were REALLLLLLLLLLLLLLY fucked up haha. Let's just say I took it better than he did and he was kind of a buzz kill and I felt like I had to stay attached to his damn hip all night. Sorry to Laver and McDuff. I should have just left him at his pad like I had considered and went solo, but I would have gotten lost.
All in all, I guess I had just an OK time. To be honest, it kind of depressed me being there. If there was a chance to see something similar in the future, I'd surely pass. :(
Some random thoughts:
1) The first track, I believe "She's Crafty" was actually really tight. They had a couple of dudes do MCA's lines during the show and the first dude was REALLY on point. He knew all the lines, had the voice down pretty well, and even had a lot of maneurisms going for him w/o trying to be cheesy. Seemed like a huge fan. He disappeared for about the middle 80% of the show and made his way back at the end. He was good.
2) I enjoyed the girl who did "Song for the Man." Kinda hippied out Jefferson Airplane type of version of the song. She also did the Santigold part of Don't Play No Game and did really well. The female MC....not so much. She had obviously just tried to learn it and ended up freestyling most of the verses.
3) The brass band was really tight and there were some other times where the instrumentalists were actually better musicians than the bboys as stated.
4) Band that did Gratitude and I believe also Time For Livin were cool. Good spin.
5) A couple of the MCs sucked dick. One of the black dudes (sorry this is all I got for a description) botched a few Yauch lines. Kind of sucks trying to rock out to a bboy song and the lyrics get flubbed.
6) Some of the songs got kinda "jammy" and went on for a while....some entirely too long. I remember No Sleep going on FOREEEEEEEVVVVVER. I was just like, end the damn thing already. A couple of MCs were trying to end it and the band seemed ready but that short white dude with the goofy DMC glasses on didn't get the picture and just kept the chorus going on for entirely too long. He was the weakest MC of the group in terms of just knowing what to do on stage.
7) Most of the night, my snobby ass kept thinking, I'd kill this track. I should be up there instead of this dude. Especially on the hip hop songs. To be honest, it's true. IF, BIG IF, I make it out to NYC in Aug and we do a karaoke thing I will definitely back up my bragadocia because I can spit, I got stage presence, and I can pretty much nail any bboy song front to back doing all 3 parts and make you think I'm the next best thing to the band themselves. I'd actually love to team up with the dude who did Yauch at the show and another real fan who can spit and put out a tribute act that would be dope, but I'm rambling lmao.
8) Would've liked more hip hop outside of LTI at the show.
That's it That's all
