I'm thinking bout taking a gap year and getting a year long US work visa next year. My first choice of location is NYC.
I'm wondering whats the work situation like over there? I've got a Bachelor of Arts Honours degree and experience working in Media as well general labour/retail and customer service experience so I think my CV is pretty vaired.
I'll be looking for whatever, preferably a job at a television network since thats where I'm at atm, but if not I'll take supermarket, fast food, restaurant, cafe, bar work. Whatever I can find.
Is it possible to find work if you're only there for a year? Will they hire a New Zealander? Cheers if anyones got advice.

There's a lot of jobs in general, so in a way - easy. But if you're in a particular field I think its a little bit harder. The cost of living here is very very high. Be prepared to work 3 jobs to survive.

I don't know about 3 jobs but agree about cost of living and availability of work in general. anyone bartend or waitress if things get tough. the hardest thing is to make a living following your passion- doing what you love to do for a living.
but once you struggle to make ends meet and start to stretch yourself thin, that's never a good quality of life.
I see it with so many artists that I know.
I would advise teaching your craft so that you have something to fall back on if you can't make it all happen according to your dreams.
also and obviously, you might have to go through a period where you are an unpaid intern but these DO lead to paying jobs.
I guess the bottom line is you have to will yourself to make it happen.

Ok so scratch the follow your dreams part, I'll take supermarket work or whatever just to live in the city and experience NYC.
Surely supermarket work aint that hard to find, and youll be at least able to cover rent and basic necessities with something like that?

have you/will you be a 'recent' graduate? (i.e. no more than 12 months since you graduated) - i don't think the work program with nz/aus citizens works if it's been over a year.
you will need to arrange sponsorship from an approved exchange organisation, and they arrange jobs for lots of their applicants. so if you arrange sponsorship the chances are they will find you a job. it's mostly camps, resorts and the like though...
if i were you i wouldn't stay in one place for 12 months, especially as NY is super expensive. travel around, see more places, try different jobs, get more experience.
