After the world lost MCA I reflected on my history with the Beastie Boys and I'd thought I'd share...
LTI – 11/15/87
I was only 8 when LTI was released, but I vividly remember watching (and loving) the FFYR video in my G-Ma’s basement. It was like nothing I’ve ever heard, the guitar riff was awesome. My dad bought the LTI vinyl for me that Christmas but when he overheard some of the lyrics he took it away from me.
PB – 6/25/8
I hate to say it, but I wasn’t into this album when it was released, but not too many were because it never made it big out of the gate. I wish I was a little bit older at the time (11) to appreciate it. The internet would have helped!
CYH – 4/21/92
As soon as I heard So What’cha Want I was all about the Beasties again. What a groundbreaking song for me. I can recall the party I was at when I first heard it. Soon after I went out and bought LTI, PB, and CYH. I was familiar with LTI, but the other two were brand new for me so it was great hearing two new albums. For some reason the distorted mic sound on CYH stood out, it was so different than anything I’ve ever heard.
IC – 5/23/94
The IC release was significant for me because it was the first album I was counting down to buy. Sabotage was already on the radio and wow…again like nothing I’ve heard before. My bud and I were diehards by now and old enough (16) to see a concert. My first live experience was 5/21/95 in Minneapolis…I’ll never forget it. I always wanted to be the 4th Beastie Boy and I even wrote some songs/lyrics…or I at least I tried. It made me appreciate the Beasties even more. I bought SOB sometime that year as well.
HN – 7/14/98
Again I was counting down the days to buy this album…the intergalactic video was already blowing up on MTV. This time around I saw the boys 8/10 in Minneapolis and then took a road trip to see them play in Chicago a few days later (8/12). It was the In the Round tour and the stage set-up was (to this day) my favorite.
TT5B – 6/7/04
The Beasties took a long time between albums before TT5B was released. This album was different because they went back to straight up hip hop and didn’t do instrumentals. The tour never made it to the Twin Cities so I took another road trip. This time I drove to NYC to see them play at MSG (10/9/04). It was significant for many reasons, but none bigger than it was the concert they filmed for the movie Awesome I Fucking Shot That. I would have loved to be holding a camera, but at least I can say I was there…what a show.
TMU – 6/26/07
I knew the album was going to be all instrumental and I was still pumped for it. I remember they would release new snippets from “The Rat Cage” each week...hilarious. To me the album is so relaxing and sublime. I am playing at for my cocktail hour at my wedding this September. The pageant tour never made it my way and unfortunately I wasn’t able to see them live this time.
HSCPII – 5/3/11
They hadn’t released and album with lyrics since 2004 so I was pumped to hear this…and not disappointed. I bought the deluxe version and was one of the few lucky ones to receive a call from Mike D thanking me for buying it. I WAS FLOORED…I talked to one of my idols and he wanted to thank ME.
My last Beastie Boys concert was 11/1/2008 in St. Paul for the Get Out and Vote tour and the last song I ever heard them play was Gratitude…how fitting. I almost didn’t get the tickets because they sold out so fast, but there was no way I was missing it. My seats kinda sucked, but who cares. They only played a total of 7 more gigs after this. I saw them play live 5 times and selfishly I wish it was more.
God bless the Beastie Boys for being there with me while I grew up and leaving me with countless memories and music to listen to forever. God bless Yauch, his loss still hurts so much. On and on till the break of dawn…
