was this song penned by MCA but performed live by Adrock?

it sounds like Yauch on the album but I have always seen Horovitz sing the lyrics behind a vocoder in concert. what about older concerts from 92-98 ?

and the lyrics definitely sound like Yauch's CYH era thought patterns, not to mention the video shows him destroying his nine...

can anyone clarify or shed light to that?

I have always thought the same thing and even wondered if it's Yauch singing on the studio version.

I think on the record it's Yauch saying "I wish for peace between the races...someday we shall all be one..." then Ad Rock saying "Why fight yourself...this one is called Rectify..." and back to Yauch: "There's something coming to the surface...better nights than this one..." etc.

I think you are right...wonder why they didn't do this live?

Everybody (Mario and Mark included) is singing on the album cut. Definitely sounds like Yauch lyrics, and all the music on the album version is sampled (from their own stuff, unused jams etc). As far as I know its always been Adrock on vocal live.

One of my favourite, if not my favourite Beastie Boys song.

According to Adrock's write-up in the Anthology, Yaunch wrote the lyrics. Adam, Adam, Mike and Mark all sing on the track. Mario doesn't really sing on it, but he supplied a vocal ("the fucked-up high-pitch sound") that's sampled throughout the song. I'm guessing it's the "aaaaaaaaaaaah" part, but not sure.

Yeah.

It's between this and Car Thief for my top two. The live version on the Root Down EP is so good.

thanks for all the info. Yauch still stands out to me, maybe I'm just hearing what I want to hear.

I loved seeing it live with Mark and fredo on funky instruments and echoes, MCA laying down a thick bassline, Mike D holding down the drums, and Adrock going nuts on the talk box...

a really underrated live gem and I'm glad others dig it as much as I do.

Oh, for me that's Yauch's voice saying "this one is called Rectify".
