So, I was watching this video of the boys promoting Pass the mic single, and the boys all hug each other at the begining, and when adrock hugs mca they accidentally kiss... And you can feel a awkward moment there... hehehe

That interview was horribly uncomfortable too watch, but not because of the almost kiss, I hate it when you can tell Adrock is having a seizure :( the host taking the piss out of him made me mad, but then he wasn't to know I guess

well if (and its a big if) he was "fucked up" on something it certainly wasn't cocaine. Adrock mentioned in an interview that he didn't do cocaine (or any drugs bar weed) after being diagnosed with epilepsy as if he had a seizure and was on stimulants he would be at risk of suffering a heart attack whilst having the seizure.
So as far as Adrock is concerned Cocaine crew don't say fuck all ;)

Not true I'm afraid. He certainly isn't having a Tonic Clonic seizure (falling to the ground, unconsciousness and convulsions) which most people associate with epilepsy. But there are many many different kinds of seizures.
Usually they are split into two main categories Generalised Seizures (like a the TC I described above) and Partial Seizures which seems to be happening to Adrock in this clip.

Here is a link which will explain a bit about seizures for anyone interested.
http://www.epilepsy.com/epilepsy/seizure_complexpartial

Hopefully some will read and it raises awareness amongst Beastie fans about the condition Adrock has been fighting all these years. I grew up watching my grandad live with epilepsy and was around seizures alot when I was younger so I already know a bit and can recognise the signs. But I'm aware there is a lot ignorance about epilepsy amongst the general public.

I just find it strange that people where joking and laughing about a video that is so uncomfortable to watch.

I don't KNOW that this is a seizure. However I do know that he is an epileptic, has said he doesn't do any drugs apart from weed so is unlikely to be blazing and that he is exhibiting all the symptoms of someone suffering a complex partial seizure (like in many interviews)
Mike and Adam will know what to do during a seizure and he wouldn't have been in any harm. You just have to let it play out and be there when they come round. But its not nice to watch and I can't laugh or joke about it. It was probably just part of the everyday life of the Beastie Boys. He (and Adam and Mike) just got on with it.

When was Adrock even diagnosed? I always thought it was later in life. Should clarify things.

He mentioned having a full on seizure in the middle of a photoshoot they did in 1989. Didn't say if it was his first seizure though. Just that it happened infront of a photographer and his only memory was waking up in the ambulance. But it may explain why they didn't tour Paul's Boutique if he was diagnosed around about the time they were promoting the album ?

And the label not being into a tour, yeah. Interesting. Of course i realised he raps about it on skills to pay the bills as soon as i posted.

Do you have a link or scan of when he said that? It's interesting, something I'd always wondered about.

In case some of you are wondering why the hell I was so sensitive to people laughing at that interview and what I'm going on about.

here is some info on seizures/epilepsy from www.epilepsysociety.org.uk

Seizures

Any of us could potentially have a single epileptic seizure at some point in our lives. This is not the same as having epilepsy, which is a tendency to have seizures that start in the brain. This page covers different types of epileptic seizure and what they can look like.

Some facts about seizures

Most seizures happen suddenly without warning, last a short time (a few seconds or minutes) and stop by themselves.

Seizures can be different for each person.

Just knowing that someone has epilepsy does not tell you what their epilepsy is like, or what seizures they have.

Calling seizures ‘major’ or ‘minor’ does not tell you what happens to the person during the seizure. The names of seizures used on this page describe what happens during the seizure.

Some people have more than one type of seizure, or their seizures may not fit clearly into the types described on this page. But even if someone's seizures are unique, they may follow the same pattern for that person.

Not all seizures involve convulsions (jerking or shaking movements). Some people appear vacant, wander around or seem confused during a seizure.

Some people have seizures when they are awake, called 'awake seizures'. Some people have seizures while they are asleep, called 'asleep seizures' (or ‘nocturnal seizures’). The names 'awake' and 'asleep' do not explain the type of seizures, only when they happen.

Injuries can happen during seizures, but many people don't hurt themselves and don't need to go to hospital or see a doctor.

"Complex focal seizures

Complex focal seizures (CFS) affect a bigger part of one hemisphere (side) of the brain than a simple focal seizure. The person’s consciousness is affected and they may be confused. They might make strange or repetitive movements that have no purpose (called ‘automatisms’). They may wander around, or behave strangely, and they may not be aware of what they are doing. They might be able to hear you, but might not fully understand what you say or be able to respond to you. They may not react to you as they would normally. If you speak loudly to them, they may think that you are being aggressive and so they may react aggressively towards you.

CFS often happen in the temporal lobes ('temporal lobe epilepsy') but can happen in other parts of the brain.

Temporal lobe complex focal seizures may include:

picking up objects for no reason or fiddling with clothing
chewing or lip- smacking movements
muttering or repeating words that don't make sense
wandering around in a confused way.
These CFS may start with a simple focal seizure and last around two or three minutes.

Frontal lobe complex focal seizures may include:

making a loud cry or scream
making strange postures or movements such as cycling or kicking.
These CFS usually last around 15 - 30 seconds.
Complex focal seizures in the occipital or parietal lobes are less common than in the temporal or frontal lobes. Like the simple focal seizures, CFS in the occipital and parietal lobes can affect the person’s vision or senses. These CFS usually last around 15 - 30 seconds.
After a complex focal seizure, the person may be confused for a while, sometimes called 'post-ictal' (after seizure) confusion. It may be hard to tell when the seizure has ended. The person might be tired and want to rest. They may not remember the seizure afterwards.

Secondarily generalised seizures

Sometimes focal seizures spread from one side (hemisphere) to both sides of the brain. This is called a secondarily generalised seizure because it starts as a focal seizure and then becomes generalised. When this happens the person becomes unconscious and will usually have a tonic clonic (convulsive or shaking) seizure. If this happens very quickly, they may not be aware that it started as a focal seizure.

Generalised seizures

Generalised seizures affect both sides of the brain at once and can happen without warning. The person will be unconscious (except in myoclonic seizures), even if just for a few seconds. Afterwards they will not remember what happened during the seizure.

Tonic clonic (convulsive) seizures (sometimes called grand mal)

These are the seizures most people think of as epilepsy.

At the start of the seizure:

the person becomes unconscious
their body goes stiff and if they are standing up they usually fall backwards
they may cry out
they may bite their tongue or cheek.

During the seizure:

they jerk and shake (convulse) as their muscles relax and tighten rhythmically
their breathing might be affected and become difficult or sound noisy
their skin may change colour and become very pale or bluish
they may wet themselves.

After the seizure (once the jerking stops):

their breathing and colour return to normal
they may feel tired, confused, have a headache or want to sleep.
Clonic seizures
Clonic seizures are convulsive seizures but the person's body does not go stiff at the start.

Here is some old information about it....Adam's had it under control for awhile now!

Anyway somebody that met him said they discussed it briefly with him and that he's not comfortable with the idea of being a 'poster boy' for epilepsy. -

Details magazine, June 1994:
"He's gone through things that would give anyone gray hair. For instance, on the subject of drugs, Adam tells me he doesn't really do them much anymore-except for smoke-because he's got a "head case".

What do you mean?

"I have seizures. In 1989 I was doing some fancy photo shoot and the flashes went pop! and the next thing I know, I'm in an ambulance. I'd had a full-on seizure in front of this photographer, who was like, Oh my God, oh my goodness! So it's serious for me- if I do stimulants, like coke or speed, it's much easier for me to have a heart attack."

Spin magazine, 1994:
"These days, he also wears a medical alert bracelet on his wrist - last November, while watching TV with (girlfriend Kathleen) Hanna, he had a full-on epileptic seizure. The illness has been controlled, but he still can't handle flash photography. What's possibly the most interesting thing about Horovitz's epilepsy is that few Beastie Boys fans seem to know about it."

since this has gone from an awkward kiss to a discussion on Adrocks seizures, would anyone be willing to change the wikipedia entry changing the Spin Article from 1994 to 2004?

the reference to Kathleen threw me off so I dug up the article, it was the issue with the funky photography by Spike Jonze and article by Chuck Klosterman.

http://www.spin.com/articles/beastie-boys-twilight-brats?page=1

it even came up on the wikipedia discussion page on epilepsy with the incorrect date info.

Just watching the video and I have to agree something was definitely up with Adrock there. Is that his special Epilepsy hat he is wearing there? I heard there was a hat you can wear to control seizures somwhat?

Also, on the Jonathan Ross tv show (for it is the man himself) the guest band ALWAYS played live in front of the audience at the end of the show as the credits roll. Beasties were obviously booked to do that and they have had to go with a bit of video instead. :(
MCA and Mike D even look apologetic about not performing even tho nothing is said. Jonathan Ross is clearly unaware of Adrock being ill as he would not have made the Rainman joke if he had known anything. He must have thought think Adrock was drunk or on drugs?
I wonder did BB's let the tv show think that in order to get on and do their promotion bit? Knowing UK health and safety rules, i think if they explained that Adrock was having a mild epileptic episode and could not perform the song, then the show would have pulled the plug on their entire appearance?

If Adrock was having some kind of seizure he wouldnt be able to stand and hug the hoster...

I think he was only playing cool/dumb... he does it a lot... and, well, maybe he was a little high...
