For those of us around then, the drop of that song was DEFInitely a classic moment. Mr Poon right? Great shit.

I've got it on my old ass iPod.

haha Mr Poon. It was found in 'a rental car'. Good times.

It's like a pre-'Say It'. Same claps as Shazam!

I don't have a copy anymore, but it was fun to hear it on youtube again. Ease up on the campaign finance schism.

I had it on a mix cd I made like, 5 years or so ago but I threw out when I moved to my new apartment. I'm surprised its not readily available for DL.

edit: Its on youtube. Just go to snipmp3.com and rip it yourself.

I believe the Beastie Boys gave this song away for free, so I dug it out of my backups and threw it on my server:

That's referring to the thread in question. It was started by mr poon. It said some bullshit about how he rented a car and found a cassette in the deck. It sounded like the beastie boys yada yada. He posted a link and it was TGNATU.

I'm pretty proud that the DL I have on my IPOD is "the original."

LONG BURN THE FIRE.

Also, listening to this makes me wonder.....whose idea was it to sample this? Now that we know where the mashed potato sample came from this should be the new question we seek the answer to.

Little off topic but I have a probably really dumb question. I have been thinking about this since last night and tried to find an answer myself but anyway- at the risk of sounding like a total idiot... Where do "B" sides come from in the days of cd's and downloads? Who puts them out and where??

Sadly, the B side is dying out with the demise of the physical single. Some bands / labels who care about vinyl still release the odd single on 12" but I haven't seen many new 7"s or CD singles in shops for years now. Some bands release EPs to download but it's a far cry from the days where every single would have a potentially great B side or at least some fun remixes.

In the old days if someone had a baby I used to buy them a copy of the no 1 single that week, but those days are gone now :( Still, there are many old singles floating around in the world for the keen collector to hoover up. With the Beasties, I think TT5B was the last album where physical singles were released but I'm sure a more thorough fan than me / online discography will correct me if I'm wrong!

EDIT: I was of course completely wrong, there have been lots of physical Beastie singles since the 5 Boroughs. Probably pretty limited runs though.

7" vinyl with b-sides is still running strong.

You probably haven't been looking in the right places.

Jack White's Third Man Records put out 7"'s for the past years. Some pretty amazing stuff...

Other bands like Radiohead and Animal Collective have been putting them out as well.

If you follow the punk scene Indie DIY labels usually put them out and you can find them on their merch tables.

Vinyl has had a major resurgence in the past years. No, you probably can't find them at the mall, but if you go to a show or a Indie Record Store you will find lots and lots and lots...

Yeah, I do go to independent record stores and I know you can get 7" singles by some bands but it's not remotely the norm it once was and most bigger mainstream bands don't seem to put out B sides any more. It's great that record store day gets more and more popular every year but I don't know if it will be enough to rejuvenate the single and therefore the B side.

I'm not trying to argue with you here.

I'm just saying I used to work at the local Indie Record store in my town and free promos are the norm if you bought a bands cd you'd get a free 7". This happened EVERY week and by a lot of bands. I used to snag one even if I wasn't into the band and I still collect them from my friends that still work there. I have hundreds of them now. On RSD The Beatles put out a box set of just single 7"'s, OFF! put out a box set, many many others as well.

There's also a bin that holds nothing but 7"'s. It's a big deal.

Maybe in the UK it's not big, but it's pretty big over in the States and it's not slowing down. The vinyl resurgence has been huge since bands started to put download cards in the sleeves so you could also get a digital copy.

Anyways. Agree to disagree and this has nothing to do with the topic on hand really.

Hey s'alright! To my shame I'm not a big vinyl junkie but I respect those who are, like you. I sometimes wish I had put more effort into vinyl as I feel digital stuff is scarily impermanent! I think that's why I bemoan the demise of the single. It may be going strong in many quarters but I do think that since the digital revolution, the classic single is not what it was and b sides are no longer standard for all bands.

Anyway, I was just trying to answer the question about where b sides are at these days so between us I guess we have it covered! More power to your collection, like I say mine is comparatively feeble so I always bow to the serious record peeps :)

Thanks guys for all the info! I had no idea they still made vinyl at all. We had a small record store here that unfortunately closed up a few years back. As many times that I was in there I never even bothered looking for "new" singles or noticed them.

I gotta say, I've been around thru the vinyl, 8trk, cassette, to present age of music and I have never gotten a thrill from buying a cd the way I would from buying an album. Well... Maybe a little when the box of 8trks would
Come in the mail.

That's a cute idea, buying the #1 single as gifts. This some may think is lame but I saved the TV Guides for the week each of my children were born :)
