View Full Version : Comments during concerts?

Let me just first say that this probably isn't the best first post. I'm a young Beastie Boys fan (both age and the amount of time I've been listening) and they're quickly becoming both my favorite band and my favorite group of people. I listen to and love a lot of music and I can't remember the last time I've become so obsessed with a group! Every time that I listen to a Beastie Boy track I haven't heard yet I immediately go to Beastiemania for lyrics and all the background info for the songs.

Now, I was going through the MCA (RIP!) tribute thread and found this great article:
http://www.thenation.com/blog/167768/mcas-feminist-legacy
But there was one comment for it that really bothered me and lodged itself in the back of my head:

"I heard that their transformation from misogynists to feminists was all PR. Granted, it was based on a personal account of what happened at a show one time, but I have to say, it's not unusual for artists to make mistakes, and then, try to rectify them to simply to appease the masses. Was it all a front? Who can say, but stories like this make me wonder:

I was fooled too. But then I went to one of their concerts, and they were totally misogynistic toward women in the audience (even though they were all married at that point), and they just acted like total jerks in general. definitely the most arrogant and ungrateful musicians I've ever seen perform and I've seen the Stones, so that's saying a lot. When Adam Horowitz was making comments about a woman's breasts in the audience I yelled "What about song for the man!?" Because that song is ostensibly all about how sexism sucks, and a guy in front of me turned around and was like "Seriously!" The audience was so loving and chill toward them and they were like "An encore? We've got better things to do" - they are totally fake. Just jerks banking on their fake image. That's all."

For me, the above is a very sad story, full of disillusionment. That's for certain."

Now, I know this is a time of mourning. Please don't take this as any form of disrespect towards the boys or any of you. I just figured I would ask the professionals what this is all about; if it's shit (which I assume it is). If this thread bothers anyone it should be locked, deleted, etc. Again, I know this isn't the best way to introduce myself, but please know that I don't mean to offend anyone. I know it's dumb to believe everything you read on the internet, but this really bothered me. As a peace offering, here's a really cool video I found of a 1992 concert in Miami. I have no idea if this is a well known video or anything, I just thought it was really cool and it doesn't have a lot of views (all props to the uploader, I just luckily found it) and it has a killer version of Finger Lickin' Good! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Aq4BRipbxg

I think its an interesting topic and Im not entirely sure, but I havent seen much evidence of sexism in their music or public appearance since probably the 89 period. But I mean even on Paul's Boutique theres Hey Ladies, verses in 3 Minute Rule, What Comes Around that have a bit of sexism to them. So I woulden't be surprised if this element of their personalities reapeared maybe slightly at a later time.

Theyre only human after all, theyre not angels, even though they are our heroes theyre still liable to revert back to old habits.

But this story could be bullshit, unless someone has an audio recording to back it up.

I do remember that when the Beasties came to New Zealand January of '05 and gave an interview to local music station C4 before their Big Day Out performance, Adrock was pretty rude the whole time, didn't say anything and when asked why he was so quiet he just said - "I've got nothing to say". Seperate issue but it bummed be out hard out at the time. My heroes finally came to New Zealand, I didn't have the chance to see them live and my then favourite Beastie (not that I pick favourites anymore) couldent even be bothered being a little friendly for the fans. I know theyre not always fans of the media, but its New Zealand music television, not some antagonistic tabloid journalist trying to stir shit. So yeah thats one time that they did disapoint me fairly majorly.

I got over it and can see it from their point of view now. They were probably tired and just wanted to rest before their show. Perhaps it was in their contract to give an interview.

Anyhow I don't really want to bring up the negative stuff either, but I have, so just like the post above, ignore this if you feel I'm being needlessly critical at a particularly sensitive time. Just generating discussion.

I think I can safely say that that story never happened, just someone trolling.

I don't think Kathleen Hanna would be married to Ad-Rock if it was all an act. Unless she is faking the feminist thing too.

There is also the Prodigy incident. If it was an act why would they put their neck on the line?
Also during the Sydney 99 show Ad-Rock does this big speech/dedication before Song For The Man.

The VMA speech is another one. In other bootlegs they tell people to step back from the stage and tell people to stop moshing.

Ad-Rock has also stopped in the middle of a songs when Mix Master Mike drops a 50 cent beat.

The comments sounds like bs to me. But who knows.

I was thinking the same thing! She would definitely be the last person he would be with.

They grew up with us, in front of us. Most of our thinking does change on certain subjects as we grow up. I also hate to say this, I am a female and totally against all kinds of sexism but, we have all been to concerts where sadly, the chick beside us is leaving nothing to the imagination. Some again, sadly, crave that kind of attention. I'm sure he made her night!

I have seen the stones 5 times and the b boys, unfortunately, only once and unless this person went back stage or to the after party, how does she/he know their personalities enough to make a comment like that? I guess you had to be there.

But mike d said in an interview (.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tFZsWaFT6HI&feature=youtube_gdata_player ) in 95 that he " hopes no one takes them too seriously, considering what we do."

We all have good days/bad days and we all sound like jerks sometimes. That doesn't necessarily mean that is who we are. In my opinion, I really don't think it is an act.

"definitely the most arrogant and ungrateful musicians I've ever seen.....Adam Horowitz was making comments about a woman's breasts in the audience"

Hey dude;

Welcome to the boards. We’re glad to have you here! It warms my heart to hear from young fans like you.

Thankyou SO much for bringing this issue to our attention. Very grateful to you.

I am personally offended by that person’s comment.

Here’s why:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jS4QH4-Jm0Q

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jJ3O-UgjRAM

I would love it if you would watch. No pressure. Just a warm invitation!

Tomorrow I am going to try to contact “Thisismydisplayname”, who wrote that comment and get this sorted out. But I think I should wait til I’ve calmed down!

Of course everyone’s entitled to their opinion and I believe wholeheartedly in the principal of free speech; but in my view; that comment is an unreserved LIE.

In fact, I believe it amounts to slander.

“Thisismydisplayname” didn’t bother to tell us where he/she first heard that “personal account”. It was displayed as a quote; but no link to the original author was provided. (I myself can find no traces of the original.) If they HAD bothered to tell us the origins of that quote; I would like to contact the first author to find out which show they attended. I’ll bet we could find someone on this messageboard who was also there on the same night. I wonder if they’d back up the story?

If a person feels the need to make such an accusation online; one would hope they’d be absolutely sure that what they were posting was FACT.

The behaviour they described is COMPLETELY out-of-character for Adam (for ANY of them) and I refuse to believe it happened.

No proof = no credibility.

Thanks again for opening up this discussion; and I hope those videos clear any doubt from your mind about our boys.

Please contact me if you’d like any more links. Happy to meet you!

xoxo

Maybe that whole thing went down something like this- since he/she only says "Adam made a comment about the girls breast" maybe it was a negative one as far as her trying to use them to get attention. Maybe that's where the arrogant and ungrateful remark came from??

Unless someone provides facts and/or sources, they should not be allowed to make such remarks on any comment board using anyone's name. Once you put doubt out there, there are always a few people who will believe and pass it on. Free speech isn't suppose to hurt innocent people.

Btw - Two totally awesome videos. The last one made me cry. Made me even more aware of the differences they have made and the hopes for the future. True Pioneers in every aspect of the word!

Thanks so much for the warm greetings and the links! I had a hard time getting through the second video, it's still hard for to understand why MCA had to leave us when he still had so much to offer. I guess that's life, but I'll always be grateful for what he gave us. Those videos did help a lot and cleared up a lot of my doubts, thank you very much.:D

how many of the bb's live shows have been recorded? 70%, 80%???
I've seen/listened A LOT of COMPLETE live shows, and I have never listened them saying stupid dissrespectful stuff. but that point is very hard to believe, because he say they didnt care about people, while I've seen dozen of times how they STOP the show when they see people crowdsurfing or pushing each other in a way that somebody can be hurt.

and btw, i dont think they have ever written misogynist lyrics. I mean, yeah, they do have dissrespecful lines, but I think they are more like teenager-way of talk than a serious point, like smash my b*** up.

Welcome aboard :D

I think you did good by bringing this to our attention so it can be rectified. We will always be grateful for what the Beasties have done. Unfortunately you'll always run into people who still view the world so narrowly. Someday I hope they can take off the blinders and not spread vitriol of any kind. Alas, people like that keep us all in check.

Adam left the door open for all of us and we have the freedom to carry on his good word and actions. Pretty cool, eh? :)

Such an excellent point.

Agreed. I have listened to most of the stuff Silence7 has uploaded. There must be HUNDREDS of Beastie live recordings out there. Have any of us EVER heard them say anything inappropriate? Even in the VERY early days; when they were at their sauciest; I never heard anything I would call "offensive". Quite the opposite. They were cheeky, sure; but also totally endearing. (Still are!)

I have taken it upon myself to revisit that site and flag that person's comment as "inappropriate". In fact; I'm gonna KEEP flagging it; every chance I get. Hopefully the moderators will pay some attention.
(I was relieved to see that no other readers had "liked" the comment.)

To all the boys……….

YES, you ARE allowed.

You are WELCOME to join. I know the name might make it seem like we’re trying to exclude you; but we’re not. The movement NEEDS YOUR SUPPORT!

The reason I chose the name is because so much of the criticism directed towards the Beasties is related to the misconception that they are sexist pigs. So it’s therefore crucial that their female fans make up the front line of their defence. But please don’t misinterpret our message: Beastie grrrls LOVE Beastie fanboyz!

And the messageboard is full of scumbags.

KP?

But I haven’t found any here.

When I first got on this messageboard on the night of the Hall of Fame; I was feeling more upset and isolated than I can ever remember being. I was kinda scared you guys WOULD give me shit.

Nup.

You’re SOLID GOLD. All of you.

Based my impressions of the ones I’ve spoken to personally; the men on this forum are intelligent, tolerant, kind, RESPECTFUL, not to mention fucken HILARIOUS. You’ve been SO sweet to me. I can’t tell you how much I look up to y’all.

The Beasties are very lucky to have you as their fans. They can be proud.

Sorry this is getting mushy; but I’ve turned into a softie lately. Just LOVE YOU GUYS.

To all the boys…………thankyou. For the laughs; for the affectionate way you poke fun at me, for comforting me, for encouraging me, for supporting my crazy-ass fan project.
