Again, thank you so much for these gems. I like the Groove Merchant reference and Adrock looking at Lee Dorsy singles!

Keep up the good work!

Hey Porky's,

Are you familiar with the original root down video with the old school NBA/Clyde Frazier footage? I've already asked this board 4 different times and no one answered (I presume because they don't know). I saw it on BET back in the day but it was pulled for copyright reasons.

Your the expert. If anyone would know about it, it'd be you.
Is it on one your compilations?

Cool one. They're in Alamo Square park. Then some Fillmore cats roll up and hang out. Classic. The city does not have the greatest rappers though. I don't know why that is. They rap way better in Oakland.

Then they go crazy in Groove Merchant. City was a lot less developed then (20 years now). Just more cool and low key. You could still get a cheap room. Now it's overrun with yuppies who watered down the reality and drove up the price on everything. I guess there's no way around it though. Happens with everything. City is still cool now, just nowhere near as much as it was then.

EMB and Hubba would have been blowing up around this time. Skateboarding was down (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OjtbkhLVRA8) with Beastie Boys.

EDIT: Stand Together is used at 3:47, in addition to the tracks which open the section. This is taken from the video which Spike mined for the 'Time for Livin' clip.

Wow, if you don't have it, the NBA must have succeeded in burning the original copy. But it was broadcasted at least once so there must be a tiny chance someone could have taped it.

I must say, the lack of interest in the original Root Down video (and/or knowledge of it) on this board is very, very surprising.

Maybe cause it's a figment of your imagination? I've never heard of it. They don't mention it in the Criterion Collection commentary either.

I don't know in what form it does exist, but I seem to recall it being on the "DMITRS" CD-ROM. Check the thread posted here a couple of weeks ago and there is a link to some of the footage.

I heard them mentioning it in passing in an audio commentary, but not during commentary for the root down song itself.

Ugh.....it seems as though the video of the CD ROM was taken down! I hope someone ripped it.

No they say it somewhere on the DVD< the subway map stuff [which is cool anyways] is what they put in place of the NBA footage.

The original video hopefully still exists, but it is sounding discouraging that we'll ever actually get to see it.

Perhaps Mike D or Adrock know.

Somebody is borrowing mine, so I can't check this. But, I think it's the audio commentary when you can hear all the directors hanging out and watching the videos together. It's all bullshit bullshit bullshit and then Root Down comes on and Evan Bernard is like "here is fact#'s 1-300 about the making of this video". They all make fun of him but are impressed at the same time hat he came prepared.

As always thanks to Ben.

As far as the talk about the other version of the Root Down video, I have seen it. Im guessing with all the vintage NBA footage it never was released. I saw it during the 1995 tour. They had tents set up for food and had a small interactive area. You could get the paper tour flyer book with Billy Joel on the cover and how I saw the video it was playing on the screen of an old arcade game. From what I remember it was mostly Walt Clyde Fraizer footage and at the time current Knick footage with Anthony Mason playing basketball with the Boys. I have not seen it since that day.
