I hope the music continues to stay out of corporate ventures. Hopefully the remaining B-Boys & Yauch's family can stay stay true to Yauch's principles and not get tempted.

Am I reading too much into it or were those news anchors sort of douchey when they were talking about the choice MCA made?

Yeah. Jodi Applegate is hot and all, but she seemed annoyed by the item. Screw her.

MESSAGE TO ADVERTISERS CONCERNING MCA/BEASTIE BOYS:
All advertising is an attempt to "brand" something - to leave an imprint/an impression so we may purchase said product. Very understandable and simple concept. With that being said...
Adam and the entire BB family already burn deeply within our hearts and minds....period.
Any attempt to "capitalize" on this - especially in this time of mourning - would do the exact opposite of said intention. Leave the music to the people - the memory to the mind - and the legacy to the soul....
Peace

Yeah it seems to be a part of the negative side of American culture. That if your not chasing every buck that is out there to be chased there is something deeply wrong with you. I remember in the REM Behind the Music, their guitarist expressed this sentiment.

Also, that carrying a gun is seen as a basic human right. I stumbled across http://www.reddit.com/r/EDC recently and was pretty disturbed by how many weirdos carry straps on the daily over there.

its every americans right to bare arms, sadly. Im against guns and I am certainly against people's easy access to obtain a weapon without the proper background check. howard stern has been bragging that he carries for years and now he just came out against guns saying no one should be able to buy one.

believe it or not, i think its against the law to wear a bullet proof vest in public but not against the law to carry a gun, unless you have a permit to carry. strange, huh?

But weapons like the AR-15 should be illegal outright like they are in every other industrialized country. If somebody wants a gun, fine. But if they want a crazy Rambo gun, no.

I'm not too familiar with gun laws but why would it be legal to own those types of guns? Why would someone need to take down 10, 20 people at a time?

in the 5 boroughs on nyc, it is illegal to have a gun in a home, unless you a cop. my x wife's brother owned guns in brooklyn. he was an x vet and legally bought them but couldnt house them. so, i had to keep them in my house on long island until my wife left then i wanted them out when we divorced.
on long island you are allowed to own them, but laws differ a bit. you are allowed to transport it in a car, but in a trunk. i own one rifle but no license to carry it. its for home protection. never fired it, ever. but the law says in order to use it for self defense in my home, i have to be cornered in my house with absolutley no where to go ONLY THEN can i "shoot to kill". even if a burglar is leaving the house I am not permitted to shoot him at all.

Is it because a company used this mix to advertise its product that was illegal or is it illegal to put out mixes to begin with?
I had put the link to the 23 min mix here and then I thought- can I get into trouble for that??? If its ok and anyone wants it, let me know :)

Um pardon me for asking but why would you want to murder somebody at this point?

people are full of adrenalin and when someone has a gun and you see someone running out of your house with your belongings, people act on instinct and think they have the right to shoot someone while leaving, in the back.

23 minutes of a mix, entirely of beastie music without permission is 200% illegal. "mixtapes" are also illegal but hard to prosecute because they are underground and hard to locate to prosecute.

Thanks. I wasn't sure if it was the mix itself that was illegal. It's common sense that using something that belonged to someone else, to profit from without their permission is just wrong.
Glad I took that link off here :) I wonder why someone hasnt pulled it by now?

Z-Trip had permission to make the mix available for free download (this was before MCA died)... Monster did not have permission from the Beastie camp to use that mix to sell energy drinks.

sorry to get off topic but i think you might be confused. as long as you have a license, theres nothing illegal about it. that would just be unconstitutional. Perhaps you mean illegal to have it outside of a home.

Im almost positive, or unless it was because he lives in the projects which is city owned where you are not allowed to own no matter what, unless your on the job. he was forced to sell the guns because he was not allowed to bring them back into the building. he legally bought the guns but cannot keep them in brooklyn.
this is what i found:
NYC has one of the strictest gun laws in the country, if not the strictest, They do not even honor a concealed permit issued outside the city. I know of no other city that is that restrictive. A permit issued by the state for a resident in Albany is no good in NYC.
it also appears that the gun law is not in accordinace with the constitution in nyc.
http://burneylawfirm.com/blog/2010/12/23/is-new-york-citys-gun-law-unconstitutional/
that unless you are a cop or have a license to carry, you cannot possess a gun in nyc.
so, it appears

It's funny that NYC is so different than the rest of the state when it comes to laws and taxes.

I really probably don't have the answer you are looking for, because I am speculating (KP where are you????), but my guess is that Z-trip was performing at their event so they probably had some sort of agreement in their contract about using footage of his performance during the event in question. If their use of his performance violated that contract then he could sue. My GUESS is that Z-trip agreed to let them use whatever they used, but because it contained long portions of Beastie Boys material (and it linked to the Z-trip Mega Mix MP3), that the B-Boy camp is fighting it. Just because the B-Boys allowed Z to release the mix doesn't mean that they transferred to him the right to negotiate with other entities for use of the same samples (practically entire songs) for the purpose of advertizing. I hope that makes some sense.

Makes perfect sense :) you are definitely correct in that the mp3 mix did not just sample parts of songs like the stuff I have read led me to believe. A few were almost complete songs. The whole sampling/mix throws me off a bit. I read somewhere where they compared sampling to quoting parts of a book or article. Still confused about that part but fully understand what you have said about this situation. Thanks :)

Hadn't heard about this before!
This dude was not doing Sir Stewart Wallace proud.
Also, I believe this is the first time I've ever heard the word "bandit" used in a nickname for a real criminal. I thought that word was only used for pet names and in old-timey TV shows and movies.
